It's simple

I would like to learn about real Dominican people and their culture. Sankies have nothing to do with it. I just don't want to be confused who I am talking to if I talk to a Dominican in the US or DR - a normal Dominican or a prostitute.

Just socialize with Dominicans who are educated and career minded because they only hang out with their kind. Only frequent non-chopo hangouts in the US and the DR. Most Sankies and Sankietes know their place in society and would feel uncomfortable socializing in nice establishments, they don't want to be stared at and talked about. If you are a person who is intelligent, courteous and respectable, you will be-able to gravitate towards Dominicans who have the same attributes.

I don't want to make assumptions here, but I think a sankie walked through my office yesterday. Here's the story:

I live in Toronto, work in an office setting. The phone rang, I answered it and on the other end was a man with a strong Spanish accent asking for directions to the office as he had a job interview. He later arrived and right away I knew he was Dominican, his resume confirmed it. He has worked in the tourism/hospitality sector for many years; he was a dancer at a resort in Playa Dorada. We got chatting while he was waiting and I made a comment regarding one of his references and mentioned that I had been to Dominican Republic. The conversation continued and I asked him how long he has been in Canada. He said three years. I then asked if he had family here, knowing very well what was coming next. He replied, I have a wife and two kids. Oh I said, that's nice, is she Canadian? He replied, yes, she brought me here. The marriage is not great, it's been on and off for some time he says. I ask him if he has been to any of the latin clubs in Toronto as he loves to dance, his reply was "she" (the wife) doesn't like when I go out and waits for me with a hammer over my head if I'm out late. What the f***?

He is having a hard time adjusting to the fast pace lifestyle here and is amazed that not many people know their neighbors. He has a large family back home and wishes to retire there one day.

I guess he was so desperate to leave and start a better life that he is willing to live under the ruling of an insecure women trapped between four walls and strapped with two very young children. He only has himself to blame for thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

Exaggeration maybe?

I don't think that EVERY resort worker is a sankie. I think could possibly be an exaggeration. I know quite a lot of resort workers and there are at least 10 guys that aren't. And they are all dancers and anamation. I have seen them all inside and outside of work and it is all a show at work. They are paid to be friendly with the guests...its not their fault some desperate people take it to mean more than it does and so throw themselves at them.

Ive seen real sankie men in Sosua who are definite sankies. They are definately the lowest of the low and can be spotted quite easily. I really would not put resort workers into that category...or at least the ones that I know from a Sosua resort.

I have also had 2 dominican boyfriends who both work in resorts. One was a massive sankie and all the tell tale signs were there from the beginning, but the other one isnt and its so clear straight away.

I just dont think that they should all be labelled sankies, thats all....just my thoughts.

Thanks for the advice! It is sort of like "tell me who your friend is and I will tell you who you are"

I agree with you that not all Dominican men, resort workers or not, are sankies.

It does get very tiresome to correct people by telling them that not all Dominican men are sankies nor are all resort workers sankies.

But please hang around for at least another 7 years ( the time I've been on DR1) and help me out :cross-eye

Thanks :)

No it isn't

I am not disagreeing with what you're saying here, but it sounds to me that when a white man/women walks around with a Domincan, the first perception would be that they are with a sankie. Is this fair?

You are correct, it is a stigma and it isn't fair but it can be overcome. I have a novia from the campo in Jamao al Norte and we are never seen together in tourist towns. The Dominicans there are brutal with their comments towards her and it is best that she doesn't visit me there. Ignorance rules over many of these relationships unfortunately but then who really cares? Right?

If you do find a decent Dominican man or woman they will not care what other people think and say. However, when it comes to Dominican women, the disgusting remarks often directed at them (not you) can become intolerable.

They are there, just look for them

See, I am not American; I am from Eastern Europe and live in the US. I don't travel to AI unless I am with my family. I don't talk to guys who hit on me when I am on vacation. It is not acceptable for me to do so. My parents would probably kill me if they noticed something like that. I only know Dominicans who live in the US already. Their culture, perception and attitude are so similar to where I was born. This is where my interest is coming from - I would like to learn about real Dominican people and their culture. Sankies have nothing to do with it. I just don't want to be confused who I am talking to if I talk to a Dominican in the US or DR - a normal Dominican or a prostitute.

Thousands upon thousands of decent hardworking Dominicans live in the DR. The ones you see prowling around the areas that are frequented by tourists are usually (but not always) have one thing in mind.... your money. It is fact of life and should be seen this way.

I have mentioned this before and I guess I will mention it again. There are numerous univerisities in the Dominican Republic. There are many businesses with Dominicans that wear a hard eraned university ring on their finger. Now this is not a guarantee that this person has good intentions or not but it is a far better chance then some smooth talking sankie that loiters outside of your hotel room like a pet dog.

Santiago..... gosh what a beautiful place! Go there, get out of your car/gua gua/whatever you are riding in and walk around. Your eyes will be opened to the wonder of the absolutely gorgeous Dominican people going about their daily lives just as any other people. Doctors, lawyers, business people, delivery boys, secretaries, sales people hustling back and forth. If you speak Spanish (because English is rarely spoken in Santiago) start up a conversation and show them that your intentions are sincere. See where this takes you.

They are out there, just not where you are currently looking.

Ahhh, the DR where anyone can be a snob. I mean, seriously, I wouldn't be caught dead hanging out with a chiropractor here in the states.
Hahahahaha
Yeah, right, as if chiros are dying to hang out with homies like you. Do fix your crooked baseball cap befoe you make another comment.
Care to post your photo in the Media gallery Mr. high class? I just like to know what you look like to be so high on your horse.

and I don't think that anyone that really knows what is going here already knows that. There are decent hard working people working in resorts too. Being a sankie is NOT a certification to work in a resort.

However, with this said and done let me add that if you want to go fishing you go where they feed, right?

You have mentioned in previous threads that one would have to live in Santiago to get together with a fine, honest, intelligent chica. Since tourists are only there for a short while, what sort of chica is willing to show you a good time for the duration of your trip? I imagine that it would be a hooker.
So by your logic you leave the tourists with no choice. This is why they keep going to Sosua and Boca Chica.
If tourists are looked down upon by middle-class santiageros, then what's the point? Why even go there?
I certainly would'nt want to catch attitude from some snobby dominicana just because I live in the US. Believe me theres' enough attitude right here in NYC, so I would'nt want to go somewhere else to get the same thing.
You know sometimes its cool to just hang out and get to know people even if the intention is not always about hooking up.

For those that do not live here it is very difficult to find a serious relationship. AZB and others only offer choices not guarantees.

But you raise a good point.

Think about this the next time you go parading that puta or puto into a classy restaurant.

I believe you're thinking of it too much like the high-class escort industry in the US. People that go to the DR for sankies/sankiettes aren't looking for dominican approval--it's all about self gratification. That's why I never understood the big huff and puff from AZB and the like.

Tourists are coming for just that.......tourism (sex, entertainment, etc. etc). Their preoccupation is not on how they will be viewed sociologically by the foregin upper-class, let alone a country that is classified as the "third world" (not meant to be derogatory, but this is the mindset of tourists to countries such as the dr). Most aren't looking to enter the upper-escalon (sp?) of Dominican society, because a week later they're on a flight back to the "real world".

But I don't think you are following the thread. We are discussing people that "fall in love" with sankies not people that come down here for "self gratification". Completely two different topics.

Stuck Ups

Santiago, huh?
I've met 'licenciadas', 'narizes largas' from good families there who are lazier and more stupid than a pound of salt.
Their only subject of conversation would be what they own, drive or whom they know. And 'nueba yol', of course.
Education of the heart, mother virtues... none.

Let's not judge by the city somebody comes from.

Of course

Woaaaaa, MF.....absolutely! Please, let's not pre-judge someone simply by where they are from. Santiago is simply a suggestion and not a rule. My family is from Imbert and Jamao al Norte which is the campo. Many of them now live in La Union which is near Gregorio Luperon Intl Airport. They are all edcuated and cultured. You can find the person of your dreams from the campo and not always in the city.

I sorry if I offended you I have nothing against chiropractors. Mine is a very nice asian lady who if I tip her, gives me something called a happy ending. Just not the sort of people with whom I would choose to socialize. What next? Massage therapists. One has to draw the line somewhere. ;)
