Hola almontejr2007!

The Liborio's Markets sells Brugal de mayita if you are ever in the L.A. area. There is many Liborio's but I know the y have it at the store on Pico and Alvarado, and the other one is on 9th and Vermont.

Also, if you are ever in the Long Beach area on a Sunday; we have a Dominican team that plays beisbol at the park on Cherry & Del Amo across from the cementery. The game starts at 10:00 a.m.

My 2 cents

My 2 cents.

Watch which salon you go to 'cause you might get burned!

Check out www.dominisalon.com it's a new Dominican salon in LA! 213-389-7896

This is my experience at Domini Salon in October:
For the first time in my life (I've been patronizing Dominican salons from DR to NYC to Amsterdam for 15 years) my ear was BURNED while getting a blowout! I didn't feel the effect immediately until I drove to work with my ear feeling really hot and once I arrived, my coworkers advised me that I had a huge blister that ended up oozing/bursting at the end of the day! I definitely had at least a 2nd degree burn along the top of my ear that led to scabs for a month and a possibly permanent scar. When I told the stylist Clara about it she was very apologetic but her business partner Keenya was totally rude and treated me as if I was going to sue them! The thought of suing them wasn?t even on my mind before she acted like that. I have photos of the scarring and good reason to do so and after Keenya treated me in such an accusatory manner, I felt really tempted to! I was not offered any credit, refund or even handled in a respectful fashion. Yes, your hair will look good but is it worth the risk of being burned? Their prices are exorbitant ? no, frankly ridiculous - $10 for the deep conditioner when the whole jar (4 treatments worth) costs $5-7! $45-65 for a blowout that normally costs $10-25 on the East Coast? A monthly membership for unlimited hairstyling that's $200-250?! How Hollywood?! Come on now... The reality is that there isn?t a large selection of Dominican stylists here but why should customers get ripped off by a salon too cheap to buy ear covers that will protect us? And then on top of that, get a horrendously rude response to a bad situation that their incompetence created? Nice atmosphere but not worth the cost or potential pain, scarring or drama. I'd rather go to the nice Dominican salons in Sun Valley any day! It sounds far but they're only 15-20 minutes over the hill! I wish I could fly to NYC just to get my hair done for a decent price! Still scarred?

Just so you know I'm not exxagerating, check this recent email from Domini Salon:

I'm thrilled to find this forum & am sharing info about LA Dominican salons &

a national Dominican salon directory:
www.roundbrushhair.com

Here's the article from Latina Magazine about the top 10 Dominican
salons in the country (I only put the LA ones on here):

The Best Dominican Hair Salons in the U.S.
There?s no mistaking the look or feel of a Dominican hair salon. Past
the often small, hidden doors, you?ll find las peluqueras standing
over swivel chairs, wielding blowers like guns aimed directly at the
curliest, frizziest hair you?ve ever seen. A bachata might be playing
in the background as they unwind soft curls from bright plastic rolos;
the chicas under the dryers shouting out the latest chisme while lunch
is ordered family-style for everyone in the house. But, as laid-back
as these joints may appear, Dominican stylists are known for giving
the best damn blow-outs in the country. Or, as Grimilda Gonzalez,
stylist of Destination Laguna Spa Salon, says,"Nosotras las
dominicanas hablamos un buen blower." That means they speak a mean
blower. And, with a little help from conditioning products sometimes
flown in from the island, they work hair through rolos, round brushes,
flatirons?whatever it takes?until each strand lies straight and shiny.
And the price? Let?s just say it?s common to get a blow-out for as
cheap as $20. Popular on the East coast, Dominican salons are now
popping up across America. Here, we single out some of our favorites.
As for an appointment, bueno, that?s up to you.

CALIFORNIA
I'd go here before the one below:

Dominican Beauty Salon
8440 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Sun Valley
818/767-2711
You want absolutely stick-straight strands that lie flat against your
face? Then see Anna Aguilar, who owns this salon. She slathers wet
hair with conditioner before using only a blower to dry it completely,
from root to tips.

Barber & Beauty Salon
9003 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Sun Valley
818/771-0787
You won?t even see a blower until owner Catalina Vandusen has first
washed your hair three?yes, that?s three?times to rid it of dulling
product residue. Hello, shine! And she?ll dry your hair in sections,
twirling the brush at the ends to give hair tons of body. But while
it?s possible to get a haircut, deep conditioning and blow-out for
only $45, Catalina doesn?t list her prices and charges according to
individual hair type.

What?d she say?

Here, a few key words you?ll need to know before stepping foot in a
Dominican salon.

el doobie: After hair is blow-dried straight, a stylist may wrap and
pin your hair around your head and cover it with this scarf to protect
strands and keep them flat. Ask for it by name.

rolos: Wet hair is wrapped around rolos?rollers?and then you?re tucked
under a hood dryer for about an hour, until hair is dry, before it?s
blown straight. This option uses less direct heat on strands, which
damages hair less than if you were to use only a blower to straighten.

el flip (pronounced fleep): When your stylist asks you if you want
your blow-out con flip, she?s asking if you want a gentle wave toward
the ends, which will give your hair more body and bounce.

halar: Remember what Frenchy said: Beauty is pain. So when your
stylist takes a blow-drier into one hand and says,"?Voy a halar!" get
ready: She?s gonna pull your hair through that brush, and she?s gonna
pull hard.

Their favorite products

Spotted on Dominican salon shelves across the country:

AG Fast Food Leave-On Conditioner: Yes, it?s actually called"fast
food," and it helps moisturize, repair and nourish dry strands.
Aghaircosmetics.com for locations.
SaLerm Silk Touch: A repairing treatment, this product gives hair a
glossy, silky feel.
Salerm.com or 973/745-0410 for locations.

Alter Ego Nequal Nourishing Color Care Conditioner: This deep,
leave-in treatment softens dry, frizzy hair. It?s also said to help
prevent dandruff.
Alteregousa.us or 888/577-7900.

line, this mask is a favorite treatment for damaged hair.

Hey guys! I've just moved to West Hollywood from NYC. Only been here a month and I already miss having a Floridita or a Presidente (those from the heights know what I'm talking about). I'd love to meet my fellow Dominicans out here. PM me anytime.

I am Dominican, and I've wanting to move to either LA, San Diego, and or San Jose area, but was afraid to, because I did not know anyone there and I was afraid there aren't any Dominicans there. I like Mexicans, but I would prefer to hang out with Dominicans because they are much fun to be around with. Hey! I'm Dominican too! Like you said, nothing beats Salchichon and Presidente.

Tell me about it David. Yo vivo en San Diego. Me mude para aca from the heights last year, y no sabes, me confuden con todo menos con dominicana. un dia un muchacho me dijo 'you have a sexy accent, where are you from? and i said "I'm from the dominican republic" and he looked at me like "What?" and the guy then said, "oh, so you're dominican republic!", I couldn't contain my laughter and I just cracked up, and I responded, "actually, I'm dominican-democrat" :) u'd be surprised how bad people are about geography in the USA. anyway since then on, when people ask me where I'm from, I answer, "I'm from where the best baseball players come from." You have to see the look on their faces. It works everytime like a charm. Cuidate y cogelo suave. Educate them!

Hey sofia i just moved to Newark, CA and thats close to San Jose but its nice to know of other dominicans in the area. I havent been here long and the only hispanics around here are mainly mexicans. I did run into one puertorican and that was amazing after just being here for a little while.
