I was discussing the DR today with another long term resident.
We agreed that the DR has "Everything" it needs to be a Paradise.
If the government, and their rich constiuants would keep their hands in their pockets, and not in the peoples pockets, can you IMAGINE???
If they educated the workforce, gave them healthcare, allowed actual "Free Trade",removed the garbage, fixed the roads, had pure water, enforced the laws equally???
The DR's position, climate, and "YES",even it's people would be the envy of not only the Carribean, but "Latin",AND South America!
"Fat Chance"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely... a self sufficient island/population... foodwise.
Under educated, underemployed, ill informed.

At the risk of being killed - it reminds me of Quebec..
Lowest education rate, highest unemployment and highest birth rate ( gracias Roma)

A real cocktail for disaster.

Like the relative that comes for the weekend and stays for the month..

Remember the Cdn system -- they pay for the needy from the others.

Every place on this earth can be paradise if you have money but wouldn't it be nice to live in a place where one needs less money to live like a king and there's a lot less crime? That sound more like paradise, don't you think so?

Truth is, the colonial zone is nice, but it's quaint and not really representative of life in the DR.
IF you're fluent in Spanish, you should get out of the city a bit and explore the country side.

I would just like to say, that there are some islands near by that speak english, don't have as much crime, and have the same climate. THe only problem is, said islands lack bachata, merengue, and the constant stream of hot girls :)

It just seems like people here who commit the crimes just do not care about the consequences. I am not saying it does not happen elsewhere it just seems more visible here. That is the scary part. Even worse some of those who are suppose to protect and serve (police) are some of the worst offenders.

Care to explain how the countryside is more representative of life in a country where 7 of every 10 people live in urban areas?

Anyone that wants a 'representation' of Dominican life should simply explore the Puerto Plata-Santiago-Moca-Salcedo-San Francisco-La Vega-Bonao and Santo Domingo-San Cristobal-Boca Chica areas. That's where almost 80% of the population lives, mostly in the cities.

Most of the remaining 20% of the population is concentrated around San Juan de la Maguana, Bani, Barahona, Azua, San Pedro, La Romana, Higuey.

Everywhere else is practically irrelevant for anyone wanting to see representations of Dominican life.

Care to explain, why only urban life is to be representative for the country?

All crime ridden areas.... :classic:

Funny you should say that..... she took a lot of heat in Canada.

She stood up in the Cdn parliament (where she was not entitled to speak) and warned the country not to follow in the UK footsteps..... very wise words went unheeded.

Good Morning NAL's,

Sure I can explain. Basically the colonial zone is a tourist bubble. Everything caters to the tourist. Want to eat - simple there's lots of american type places there. Want to shop? Sure no problem, everything is there in American inspired prices. Everyone is there catering to you the tourist and wants to treat you the tourist great. The tourist police are there in theory to make sure you don't get robbed etc.

Which is why when he says "i don't see what the big deal is, SD is great", it's like going to time square and saying NYC is full of big billboards everywhere.

See what I mean?

I don't get why it is "wrong" to compare SD's crime rates to other cities of the same size or larger?

If people are trying to make the point that things are "bad" well news for them it's all over. It's all the same whether one has to address the violence in SD, Santiago, Orlando, NY, etc....

Making "Excuses" about the DR's problems adds "NADA" to the debate!

Where do I live ?????? What goes on elsewhere is certainly relative - it's called perspective. I recommend you get some! By the truckload!

Bottom line is everybody knows you just like to look for a reason to criticize and nothing more!

I think perspective is something we all naturally have through past experience and so automatically know when something is good or bad because of this. I don't think what goes on somewhere changes what happens elsewhere but it is normal to use past experience as a guide bar.

Say, I don't want to move to England because the weather is sh1t. Without knowing the weather is crap we wouldn't be able to judge that, but knowing that does not change the weather in either country, and so yes, is absolutely irrelevant in the end, but you know you don't want to go there, so is good to have that perspective.

I don't see the point in posters continuously posting 'well in my hood in NY' posts, if you must then mention it where you come from, but no one really cares and it makes no odds so I see no point. These recent ones have been more about a guy telling us how street or gansta he is more than anything else, nothing at all relative to life in DR, no one needs to be told stuff about places they aren't interested in, by people they aren't interested in, so............................... why you listening to me:cheeky:

again just my take on it:ermm:

Just remember that only 20% of DR1'ers live in the DR so that's not saying a lot.

I will admit you are the biggest lambon though. :)
