See what I mean?

No I do not see what you mean.

Speculate all you want. We shall see in due time what effect if any this case will have on JD tourism. I'd say none to extremely little. You say whatever you want. We shall see.

Any indication that the missing Daryl Fontera is someone who may be one of the unidentified

I suppose you mean Darryl Fornatora, the missing surfer.

No particular reason to expect him to be a victim of this gang, since (as far as anybody knows) they very specifically targeted local bus drivers, to steal their money and especially their vehicles.

The fact that Matt Rigby, who went with Fornatora on the trip, canceled an interview with investigators and hired an attorney suggests the investigation is moving in a different direction.

Today's DR1 News has two items on the story:
Bodies discovered in Juan Dolio
Police and the judiciary in the province of San Pedro de Macoris have confirmed that three bodies have been discovered in a pit in Batey Los Conucos near Juan Dolio beach. The bodies have been identified as three bus drivers: Gary Wilson Rodriguez Castro, who drove on the Hato Mayor-Sabana de la Mar route, German Arredondo, who worked as a removal man and haulage contractor in San Pedro, and David Polanco, who drove on bus route B in San Pedro de Macoris.
The remains were found following the arrest of a woman, supposedly a member of the police, who is being linked to Hugo Antonio Zorrilla Alfonseca, described as a gang leader and the son of an unnamed active law enforcement colonel. A man named as Radhames Antonio Ramirez has also been arrested in connection with this case.
According to assistant prosecutor Carmen Mohamed, the suspects disclosed the location of their victims, whose attackers would get onto the bus near the end of their route and make them drive at gunpoint to a location, kill them and then rob them of their possessions including the vehicle.
Dozens of family members, including wives and children of the victims as well as other friends and relations arrived at the location where the bodies were found.
The pit was around 45 to 50-feet deep and Civil Defense and firefighters from San Pedro and Santo Domingo were brought in to help remove the bodies. They acted under the direction of the Central Criminal Investigation Unit (DICRIM) of the Police and the prosecutors from Hato Mayor and San Pedro.
Over the past few months, seven bus drivers have gone missing in the east of the country and the authorities are still searching for the rest. It is thought that the bus drivers were killed in turf wars between competing transport cartels.
Three other bodies were found by a man who was digging a well on 22 May 2016, but they have not yet been identified.

Horrendous crime of minibus drivers
Enrique Estevez de Leon, one of the prosecutors investigating the case, says that the authorities suspect that the crimes were committed by a gang that stole the vehicles for resale in Haiti. According to Estevez, the gang had connections there.
As reported in El Dia, the criminal gang has killed at least four bus drivers in eight months. They would hire the drivers and then throw them into the cave pit in Juan Dolio while still alive. The men were found gagged with adhesive tape.
The first driver to be murdered was Vidal Dionisio Berroa Manzueta, whose body was found on 17 September 2015 gagged and with signs of violence in the waters of the Higuamo River in San Pedro de Macoris. Hugo Zorrilla Alfonseca, said to be one of the gang leaders, was arrested for this crime. He is the son of a Police colonel. At the time he was given preventive custody, but was later freed.
El Dia reported that the next victim was driver Jary Wilson Rodriguez, who this time was thrown into the cave pit near Los Conucos in Juan Dolio. Zorrilla Alfonseca and several others are again suspected of this crime that took place on 20 April 2016. This victim, who was from Sabana de la Mar, was a member of the Union Nacional de Transportistas Unificados y Afines (Unatrafin).
Ten days later, on 1 May 2015, bus driver David Polanco was reported missing. His body was found in the same cave pit. Polanco was affiliated to Fenatrano.
Next to disappear was German Arredondo, whose body was also found buried in the same cave pit in Juan Dolio with the two other drivers. Their minibuses have not been located.
The investigations led the authorities to re-arrest Hugo Zorrilla Alfonseca and Radhames Antonio Rodriguez who then led the authorities to find the bodies. Another suspect is Divanis Adames Lorenzo, and an unnamed Haitian, identified as Yan, who is accused of acting as the liaison for taking the vehicles to Haiti.

I'm reading the victims were probably thrown headfirst in the pit alive.

that's what i read too. the victims went missing on different days too so one may assume they were thrown in on separate occasions.

i hope the gang members rot in jail and never see freedom again.

I think it is best to wait for the court case to continue in San Pedro de Macoris on Tuesday before speculating on any connection between the killings in the east and people missing elsewhere . I am hoping the link man in Haiti can be caught soon and be forced to give information.
