for the love of god, frankie! relax! :)
listen, all opinions about restaurants are based on internal feeling. some will like rustic decor, i would thing is looks old and dated. some will like to have the food accompanied by bachata, i would get up to kill the DJ with a butter knife. some like their garlic sauce creamy, i say cream? gtfo, make it all garlic! some will praise pasta dishes, i would say no way, makes me bloated. some will leave after their longaniza dish full and happy, i will leave with a case of stomach bug.

however: the size is not subjective, unless you are looking at the reflection of your own arse in a new dress: it is always too big for you and always too small for your hubby.

i have never been to papi's, i admit. miesposo says they used to rock but after new owners came in he could not bother to visit (he used to live in cabarete). but we go out quite often, to the same places. the dishes are consistently the same size, all all times. if it says two chuletas it will be two chuletas: they may both be ok size or one may be bigger and other smaller. but at the end of the day i get the same amount of chuletas.

since you are comparing: in my country there is something called SANEPID. they are a sanitary control of food establishments. they also control portion sizes and the drinks. they often come up with cheap vodka being put in a bottle of more expensive one. hey, barman pours 50ml from belvedere bottle but in reality it is just absolwent (nasty vodka, you don't want to know). people cheat everywhere.

now, since i am dv8 i will agree with you on some accounts :) people do constantly complain about the most stupid s**t. i used to work in a pub in london. we sold food too. there was this dude coming EVERY SINGLE DAY, eating the same thing all the time: steak, medium rare. EVERY SINGLE TIME he sent it back to the kitchen saying there was something he did not like. sure there was not! i have seen a chef wipe his ass with this dude's steak, drop it on the floor, in a rubbish bin and so on. and every single time dude sent it up we did nothing to the steak. just send it down few minutes later. it was ok then.
some people, i swear....

Doesnt even live here...enough said.

So, moving on, does 'Papi' use DR1? will he come out of the woodwork to take on feedback and respond??

Vinyasa,
Frank is Dominican and can speak additionally from a European/US perspective, as a restaurant employee within throwing distance of Papi's for 1/2 of each year, and an all around knowledgeable guy about many things in DR. More than most can say on DR1. I'm pretty sure that the owner is being made aware of this thread after I contacted a mutual friend. Can't say for sure though whether it will be read or responded to as I don't personally know the owner.

That said, I've been going to Papi's since 2001. I've been twice in the last 2 months. I agree with the overall impression that prices are up, quantity is down, and the product isn't what it used to be. The sauce used to be to die for... with requests for additional bread to sop up the remainder. In my two most recent visits there, it wasn't as thick, wasn't as much sauce, and while good flavor - it wasn't what it was historically.

They still do a lot of business, I think off previous reputation and that it's still about as good a meal as you can get anywhere else on the beach. But, it's to the point I don't think it's worth the price charged... and that's an issue for any restaurant when people start feeling that way.

At this point, if I'm going to have a good meal in center Cabarete, I go with Miro's. Have yet to be disappointed there with either service or the food.

fair enough CFA...i kind of assumed this and was being a bit tongue in cheek in the hope that he might finally give up his one-man crusade on this thread :)

And just to paint a fair picture, although i was personally complaining about the size of my langostinos, the rest of the meal was good. The ceviche with mango was excellent and huge and the crab cakes tasty. Was a little surprised not to see avocado on the large mixed salad, it being avocado-season, but there you go.

As for the sauce, it still seems pretty tasty to me but then i didnt know it in the old days.

Be interested what the owners response might be

Haha, showed my wife this pic and she just laughed.. the camarones a la papi is literally half or less of what this portion size is.. On another note, I'm on my way to papi's now to have lunch.. this thread made me hungry! .. I always want to vote with my wallet but it's hard to do when the food is still literally the best we have in Cabarete lol.

Tough crowd. Im in the rest business myself. One thing I hate is to read reviews like this LOL. Please tell the owner or manager when you are not happy. He should appreciate the feedback and make your complaints right.
Well we did tell the new owner that we were unhappy that our party of 20+ people (with a reservation) were not given seats and that we were ignored by all the servers. This was shortly after the restaurant changed hands. His response was, "if you don't like it, then leave"! We did, and we won't be back.

Sounds like a guy who has a business death wish.............
It would really be nice for him to read all this unfavorable coverage..........

We also went to Miro's a couple of weeks ago...

The sushi appetizer was fantastic, and a nice portion
The sashimi Acira had was fine in taste, but a bit too thickly cut, and a nice portion
I had the shrimp in pernod sauce... the pernod was, for my taste, a bit overpowering, but that is 100% personal. Very nice portion. I took half of it home in a doggy bag....

Service... excellent. Even the owners came over to check if everything was ok.

It was kind of pricey, but ok, you pay for location.

One big negative, and nothing to do with them. The blaring music from O'Sheas was really annoying.

sounds good B...can i ask how much the bill came to?
We paid $80 for two at Papi's.

And we had awful music from Bambu's...seemed like the DJ was practising his scratching skills....very badly!!

If i owned a restaurant and was on site, i would be visiting as many tables as possible. Granted, people dont always speak their minds when asked but it does make it easier for those with a genuine grievance to speak up when their opinion is being solicited in this way. Certainly much easier than having to go over and complain. For all Frank says about restaraunteurs needing feedback, you never quite know how it will be recieved.

Another great beach experience i had (as i mentioned earlier) is the restaurant at Nathalie Simon. The chef, Franco, who has cooked at other Cab establishments, offers a daily 3 course menu for $750...and that includes impuestos! And the food is very good.
Call them that evening to check whats on the special for that day.
And when i was there, the new owners came over and were very keen to know our opinions...bravo!

We, the owners of La Casita De Papi in Cabarete, take this opportunity to thank those who brought this thread to our attention and urged us to respond to the anonymous nature of the internet. We took ownership of the restaurant April 30, 2010. One or both of us has been present during dinner service every night. Complaints are dealt with on the spot. Respect to Georges, the 'a la Papi' sauce is an existing recipe that has been cooked at La Casita for over 12 years, by the same chef for 7 years. Our staff are human beings, including the 8 month pregnant woman who apparently failed to deliver the complimentary mamajuana. La Casita de Papi is a busy restaurant and we get the pick of fresh seafood on the north coast. All product is closely monitored from catch to plate, service size is calibrated and has been since day 1 in adherence to what preceded us. We do not sell salmon and have never done so. The original menu hangs on the wall to compare price.
Thanks again,
Martial and John

It is the story of a crow and a nightingale, do you know it?
A crow and a nightingale are sitting on a branch in the forest
and each of them pretend to sing the best .....
crow BBBBrrrhhhh
nightingale SSrrriihhhh
Both of them say "it is me who sings the best "
Not coming to a conclusion, there arrives a little pig in the pass of the forest, just like that.
The crow says
"Hey you that is perfect, you are here, you are going to decide for us!"
and the little pig says, "that is perfect for I have nothing to do"
The pig sits on a little bush crossing his little legs.
"Go on" says the little pig, "sing"
the crow BBBrrreuhhh
the nightingale SSSSrrriihhhh
The little pig thinks and says
"Me, I say that it is the crow who sings the best"
Of course the nightingale bursts into tears!
And the pig says to the nightingale
"You are crying, normal, it is because you lost!"
and the nightingale answered
"No, I don't cry because I lost, I cry because I have been judged by a pig"

The bill at Miro's came to 100$ for 2 people, and this included 2 glasses of wine each.

Yup, good thing I chose Jose's instead of this place for lunch today, my wife convinced me out of it lol.. Well, I guess the future of Papi's is pretty much written after the owners response.

Damn, another thing I just noticed is that this thread has 2000 views.. Hey, guys from Papi, maybe you need to hire a PR person or something because I can guarantee you are going to feel the effects of your last post for a long time :(
