Ok, let me bring this around to the DR. When my father was growing up here in Bonao in the 1930's, 1940's, & 1950's, he said that there were no birds. My uncles confirmed this. Ask any Dominican in their 60's & 70's why there were no birds on this island when they were growing up?

Well, most people can probably already guess...they killed them all. Every Dominican kid, teenager, and young adult spent every waking hour trying to kills birds. Many ate them, others just simply killed them for sport. All it took was a sling shot and some semblance of aim. Every Dominican male over 50 already knows this phenomena.

When my father retired in the U.S and moved back to Bonao in 1993, he couldn't believe all of the birds, they were everywhere! it was shocking to him. he talked about it with his childhood friends all the time. None of them seemed to understand that birds migrate, and so, even if you kill them all every year, next year, a whole new population will return again and again. He was relieved. Here, was an old man, who had spent his entire Dominican youth and young adult hood in America killing birds and squirrels, turtles and geese in order to eat them. When he returned back home to the DR, he was relieved to see that they came back.

It's the same story for every Dominican male. By nature, teenage males are built to kill. it's in our instinct. We're no different than a feral cat. They kill for food. But, release any house cat outside, and its instinct is to kill, kill, and kill some more. Cats are the number one killer of birds in the wild. cats kill over 3.7 Billion birds just in North America. They kill even if its belly is full of cat food:Cats kill up to 3.7B birds annually

I know it has nothing to do with this thread, but, as a young teenager, i find it hard to understand why a kid with a gun wouldn't instinctively want to go out and kills animals...it's in our blood.

If I made such broad derogatory generalization about an entire group, I'd be tarred and feathered by the DR1 PC crowd...:cheeky:

Take a look at HAWAII to see how gun laws work. Connecticut is a poor example, because it is quite easy to import guns from other states into CT. Hawaii, not so easy, as guns cannot be flown across the border.

I don't see any broad generalization here: give millions of of teenagers a .22 rifle and watch how they decimate an entire population of birds and mammals. Give millions of Dominican teenagers a riffle and watch how many birds survive on this island.

When my father was young, everyone had sling shots. they decimated the entire bird populations in small towns like Bonao. Just ask any older Dominican over 60yrs old how many birds were around when they were growing up compared to today.

Stay current, teach.

I mentioned CT because the gubmint is trying to confiscate guns...with almost no success.

Which goes to the heart of the matter:

"Guns don't kill people.

People kill people."

Take a look at confiscation in CT if you want to see how gun laws work.

People have hunting rifles in Norway. Lots of hunting rifles. Not hand guns. It is very illegal to carry around a handgun in Norway. Period. No exceptions. I don't even know anyone who owns one. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who does own one. And chances are, they would be kept locked up at a gun club.

This isn't a broad characterization?

Back to the subject, i stand by my observations...people who have this overwhelming desire to walk around with a handgun tend to be people who suffer insecurity problems, low self-esteem, erection problems, and premature balding. They tend to be cowards, and instead of fighting man to man with your fists--which enable you and the person you're fighting to laugh about it afterwards and maybe share a beer together--instead, they want to pull out a gun and shoot and kill someone instead.

How about this?

I dont agree.......
When I was a kid in the french countryside, we used to go around "hunting " with a sling shot. Amazing what u can do with them......
Then we went on to pellet guns, killing crows and rabbits ( local farmers would pay us a couple of francs every kill!!!!! ).

My wife, brought up in the campo in the dr, has ressembling stories to mine.......

Point is today kids in the dr ( in my campo at least), hang out in an area of 100 m around the house. They also spend a lot of time watching TV.....

Morality, in europe and in the dr, kids used to live their life outside. Nowadays theycant set a fire, xlimb a tree ( ok some can ), walk 5 klicks.
Why?? Dont know.
But back home and in the dr we have generations of fat f#$@ and lazy sods growing up !!!!!!!!!

I have never seen a seagull anywhere in the DR. Were they all hunted to extinction? Did they ever exist on the island? The Spanish word, by the way, is gaviota.

I've seen and been around a whole lot of fistfights in my life (especially owning a working mans' music hall/sports bar) and have never, ever once seen two guys going at it with guns instead of fists.

And I don't know one Dominican male, relative or friend, who goes out to "kill."

There aren't birds and and wild game, and the local fisheries are poor for ONE reason: poor people need to eat. Not because of bloodthirst.

help me out please with this one, what is a gun safe? like you actualy need to buy a safe to store your gun?

Guns which are improperly stored are either stolen to become "crime guns" or found by children to become "fatal accident guns".

That entire Adam Lanza/ Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy should have been avoided by responsible gun ownership and stowage on the part of his Mother Nancy, the owner of the "Bushmaster" XM15-E2S. Hiding guns is no substitute for proper stowage.

That is a richman's idea. Pay a couple of hundred dollars to lock up the gun you bought to protect the family and then when you hear those strange noises at 2:00 AM start to wonder where you hid the damn key where the kids wouldn't find it.

What could be more ridiculous?

Absolutely not. Around $100, biometric lock that takes about a second to operate and it stores on your nightstand, right next to your head.

ahahaha, that is why i was asking it because this clip was running through my mind exactamente!

i would have thought that once you are allowed to have a gun in your house that you could keep it wherever you'ld like to or at least at a safe place away from the childeren.

Well, again, i do not see any broad generalization here: there are 10 million people on the Dominican side of this island. There are another 9 million on the Haitian side. that's 19 million people on this island with pourous borders.

Let's say of the 19 million people, 7 million are between the ages of 18yrs and 40yrs old. Suppose all of them could afford a handgun, and hence, carried a handgun around with them at all times. What do you suppose would happen to gun violence if 7 million young men are walking around and driving around the streets with a handgun everywhere?

Ok, forget about Haiti for a second...suppose every Dominican male between the ages of 18yrs and 40yrs can afford to carry around a handgun...how well do think drunken disputes and arguments, and acts of jealousy are going to pan out if millions of young men--who cannot even put a condom on correctly--start carrying around a handgun?

Either there is a bunch of people with their heads buried deep in the sand, or i'm just crazy for thinking that something bad is going to happen with the crime rate and gun violence on this island.

Lots of crows, pigeons, doves, and yes seagulls. Whenever there a big storm at sea you'll see terns and seagulls, even in Jarabacoa. lots of myna birds as well. Palm chits by the million. Occasionally I see a falcon or hawk as well.

I'm sorry, but this is really blowing my mind...this idea that there should be absolutely no gun control, and hence, every single young man should have the right to carry around a handgun in a country where the illiteracy rate is skyrocketing and embarassing, where people get drunk and drive as part of accepted culture, where people do not know how to budget an $8000 peso monthly check, where tens of thousands of people go to cock fights--the kind with roosters--and argue over who has the best cock, the biggest cock, and the meanest cock; where tens of thousands of people go to baseball games and argue who has the best team; where people drive like maniacs and never take the blame for any accident they cause; where people try and pick up your wife, girlfriend, or daughter and take them to a cabana as part of accepted culture; where people will cut in front of line in front of you and think nothing of it; where people will drive on the wrong side of the road...and the list goes on and on.

And now you want to arm 5 million Dominican males and hope that they are mature enough to safely store their guns. Really? Does anyone out there really think this is a great idea...an idea of absolute genius?

My old mother carries, and has defended herself twice from thug carjackings in Tampa.

Who said no gun control, Frank?

The DR and Haiti have plenty of gun laws. The US also.

To say there are no "gun control" is to admit you don't know what laws are on the books.

Enforcing them are another story. Even in the US many gun laws are not fully enforced, yet the screaming mimi's on the left want more and more "gun control."

Do you even KNOW what the gun laws ARE in the DR?
