Ok, let me bring this around to the DR. When my father was growing up here in Bonao in the 1930's, 1940's, & 1950's, he said that there were no birds. My uncles confirmed this. Ask any Dominican in their 60's & 70's why there were no birds on this island when they were growing up?
Well, most people can probably already guess...they killed them all. Every Dominican kid, teenager, and young adult spent every waking hour trying to kills birds. Many ate them, others just simply killed them for sport. All it took was a sling shot and some semblance of aim. Every Dominican male over 50 already knows this phenomena.
When my father retired in the U.S and moved back to Bonao in 1993, he couldn't believe all of the birds, they were everywhere! it was shocking to him. he talked about it with his childhood friends all the time. None of them seemed to understand that birds migrate, and so, even if you kill them all every year, next year, a whole new population will return again and again. He was relieved. Here, was an old man, who had spent his entire Dominican youth and young adult hood in America killing birds and squirrels, turtles and geese in order to eat them. When he returned back home to the DR, he was relieved to see that they came back.
It's the same story for every Dominican male. By nature, teenage males are built to kill. it's in our instinct. We're no different than a feral cat. They kill for food. But, release any house cat outside, and its instinct is to kill, kill, and kill some more. Cats are the number one killer of birds in the wild. cats kill over 3.7 Billion birds just in North America. They kill even if its belly is full of cat food:
Cats kill up to 3.7B birds annually
I know it has nothing to do with this thread, but, as a young teenager, i find it hard to understand why a kid with a gun wouldn't instinctively want to go out and kills animals...it's in our blood.
