Well, in Saint Martin they REALLY don't doubt that this was the hurricane of the century. In fact, they probably wish it will be the last one too.

When was the last time that a hurricane threw cars around as if they were nothing? That's not normal in those storms.

Just think that off the north coast all hell is breaking loose, albeit in the open sea. Otherwise the DR would had been a gigantic Saint Martin.

and of the actually(its a couple hours ago that ia had that report, hopefully doesn't increase) report about loooses of lifes, sadly St Maarten counts for 8 of the 10 reportet Irma Victims.
they got the full force of Cat5 Winds.

Cabarete
Here on the beach east of Cabarete winds are only 10mph-15mph right now. Earlier for about 2 hours I would guess they were blowing about 35mph-45mph with some gusts to about 60mph(?). One big almond tree was blown down and a couple small ones. That was the extent of the damage. Even our cana roofs and palapas on the beach weren't damaged.

Storm surge was about 5ft which brought it up to the level of our pool deck. Small wall prevented any sea water or debris coming in. Waves close in were about 5 ft. Further out on the reef I could see some that looked to be 10ft-12ft.

Probably will get some more rain later, but the worst is over. Good thing it didn't come any closer to the coast than it did. Looks like it was about 60 miles off Cabarete Beach(?).

if it would have entered the Caribbean Sea it would have very likely extremely bad for the country, even without a direct hit, and at the moment the steering currents would not push a storm in the caribbean Sea from E-W, it would turn it NW'wards.
it is just a thing of position and timeing.
we got it on our North and we got it at the right time, not the highest Tides as we will have them later in the year.

I want to say thank you to a wonderful and kind group of people here, most especially Mike Fisher, for providing factual and honest on the ground information.  For those of us not on the ground and with loved-ones in harms way, this information and communication was so important!  This is the way people should always come together, people from all over the world helping each other!  Thank you and Cheers!

Spectacular job!!! The DR1 Forum members, and especially Mike, deserve a great big round of applause! We all know that there are those who have suffered from this storm. And Lord knows there are brothers and sisters on other islands who have truly suffered. But watching you guys pull together to get out helpful information has been just spectacular!

If you saw CNN last night you would have heard about Barbuda .. the airport runway was damaged by the storm.

In talking to the helicopter pilot , he clearly saw what caused the damage..
A rolling, bouncing cargo container had tumbled across the runway making potholes that were impeding landings.

He added .. Oddly, we couldn't find the container anywhere.

Imagine a runaway cargo container smacking something...
Must have been quite breeze pushing it along..

In LT the power is back on. The wind came over the mountains, which caused the city to be shunned from a worse scenario. I have seen trees that have blown over, some roofs that lack the outer part. Some restaurants down by the beach have got the sea in the knee. It blew less than I expected.

I too thank Mr. Fisher for holding our hands and guiding us. Great job. Also to everyone that gave on the ground reports and those that had suggestions on preparing. Lot's of good information and team work.

Outside of Sosua. The Atlantic ocean still has good sized swells but is calming down some. Power is still off but amazed that internet and TV still on. We didn't get that much rain and expect some showers perhaps but nothing major. Nice breeze and it feels so good to open up some windows.

I must confess, I am a little disappointed that I, as an individual, was not challenged and not even really inconvenienced. Getting ready for the worse was worse then the event.

I don't know why or how the DR got so lucky when everything pointed to a very bad situation and beyond. We have checked with our friends and workers and everything is fine. That is a big relief. I know that some have lost homes or having a bad time but nothing close to what the projections were indicating.

Thanks again. Time for a second cold one. ;)

came back home from a ride around costambar. we had to drive on the golf course because some streets are unpassable. sitting home i thought it was all a breeze. boy, was i wrong. many trees are down, some have broken branches, some are completely uprooted. cables in some areas down. the street right by the water is completely covered with debris. basically all the trash from the small beaches has been thrown back by ma nature. i saw one car that has a bonnet smashed by a falling tree. roof damage on some properties. trash and trash bins everywhere.

unbelievable. i have never seen anything like it. and this is a good area that is well managed and house owners were prepared. i cannot imagine how does the city look like.

we sent some food for security who are still working and will be there throughout the night.

Ok...time for a summary of what occurred.

Irma "DID NOT" produce hurricane winds in Punta Cana.

Irma "DID NOT" drop large amounts of rain in Punta Cana.

Irma "DID NOT" damage "ANY" resorts in a major way. Worst damage would be a plantain tree sitting sideways.

The airport "DID NOT CLOSE" at any time and is currently awaiting incoming daily flights.

Anyone concerned about their upcoming vacations this week should look forward to "MAINLY SUNNY SKIES" starting Saturday.

Cheers

I think you know what I mean... The impact it would have had on the north-coast.
By no means I see it as a Disappointment but we have had our lesson how to interpretate the (US) news.

Funny comment that was unintended... but funny

we slipped the noose due to the mountains and the eyewall change ---IMO

less than other did and will experience...

Personally - I am glad it's over.... I was sweating bricks

The North Coast of the DR got exactly what was predicted...60 mph winds and nothing more. Here in Sosua, many trees and branches fell taking down power lines. Some streets are flooded, but over all it's nothing major. Power came back on around 7:15pm. I've been through bigger winter storms back in Ontario Canada so I'm a little disappointed, but as well relieved. Hope everybody is fine. Thank you Mike Fisher for your insight....you really know your stuff.

A high school friend of mine lives in Phillipsburg, St. Maarten. Like Mike Fisher, he has (11) boats and does charters for diving, fishing, etc. I don't know how his boats did, but he's okay, was out helping others. I wonder if they'll stay there after this.

When I see the images from there, and imagine what could have been in DR, it's scary.
