He states that "Maybe Less than 200 pesos per day" to feed a child in the DR!
"Children" cost MORE than adults for food on a daily basis.
One quart of milk costs about a dollar here. I only give my kids "Skim Milk" which costs more!
They take food to school as well.
If you feed your kids "Dominican Style"(Sugar, Fat, & Salt) you can feed them for very little.
90 % of Dominican kids have anemia!
Childrens food is NOT the place to think about saving money.
Now, ya wanna talk "CLOTHES"????
Education?
Health care?

I Already know that DR can be cheaper than Europe or US but is this a JOKE. Why you didn''t include all other cost that other posters like cc included. You're post is useless....

I was responding specifically to CC s comment:

Feed a child - other expenses on top.

I illustrated a days costs for feeding a child good meals.

Clothes can vary right from second-hand quality clothes at 20 pesos an item to latest boutique wear.

Education can vary from home schooling right up to sending the child to a top school or a European boarding school.

Health can vary from a simple local policy or self-insured to World-wide cover with top international insurance company.

My opinion is that local food is very reasonably prices good and nutritious when prepared in traditional American, European or Asian manner.

Most of his posts are.

A while back, folks concluded his ultra-survivalist viewpoint was possible, but well outside what mainstream folk would even consider. Pi2/Yannadu/Yapaski/whatever (he gets banned every few months, and has to create a new identity) may or may not be a nutcase, but he certainly has never cared for children, or anyone else. That in itself should tell you volumes.

Liver and semolina for lunch? Even Oliver Twist's gruel sounds like an upgrade from that. Yuck....

My kids are Dominican enough, that they like when I season, bread, and deep fry chicken livers.
BUT,................ they love American cereal.
At $5 a box!
Diet, education and healthcare are VERY important,I have one at university, one in "High School, and two in "Grade School".
Books alone are over $1,000 US a year.
"Home Schooling" is NOT an option for me.
Can you IMAGINE what I would teach them?????!!!!
Besides, they are already smarter than I am, otherwise how could they be manipulating me like a puppy?

I challenge you to prove that statement even comes close to the real number!

First of all, to post REAL data, out of all the kids living in poor households only less than 32% of this group suffers from anemia from lack of proper nutrition.

That's a data for kids between 6 months and 5 years old!

Jamie Olliver; a world leading chef thinks a liver casserole can be heavenly. Certainly it featured in my school lunches.

Jamie Oliver - Forums / Liver and bacon - beta

Oh, yes I remember many of today's children in places like the US, UK are obese through poor diet.

Many Americans don't get the recommended daily intake of these essential nutrients, according to the University of Washington's Neuroscience for Kids. Approximately 1 to 5 million people don't get enough vitamin A. Vitamin B9, or folic acid, is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies. Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the world.

Eating beef liver can reduce your risk for several health issues related to nutrient deficiency. Boosting your intake of vitamin A through consumption of beef liver can help decrease your likelihood of experiencing night blindness and other vision problems. Increasing the amount of iron you eat helps prevent anemia, and getting enough folic acid may help reduce your risk for nerve and memory problems as well as reducing the risk of neural tube defects for pregnant women.

Nearly everyone loves semolina pudding. It was a great favourite during and after WW2 and was often to be found in school dinners, sometimes chocolate flavoured!
It is especially good sprinkled with nutmeg and baked in the oven, so there is a lovely slightly crispy skin on top. But even if it is made as a quick pudding, just cooked on top of the stove and served with jam, or cooked with sultanas, it is still tasty!!
Semolina is a type of coarse ground wheat. The pudding was found in recipe books, under the 'genre' of milk puddings (along with rice, tapioca, sago and macaroni).

Semolina Pudding recipe - Cookit!

I fully accept if you take kids out for happy meals all the time budget will be many times higher. As they eat the supersize portions you can think : will they still enjoy a run on the beach in 10 years time?

But the typical days meals at under 200 pesos could have many variations : also some people are vegetarians etc. or enjoy more oriental recipes etc.

Yes, in my posts I,m no way telling people what to do - just another viewpoint.
If as a child I would not have eaten the nourishing food offered in my family and demanded something else expensive my father would have said tough - earn money yourself to pay for it. Actually through a friend of his he did arrange a small plot of land for me to grow food when I was age 14. I grew beans, potatoes etc.
Books - most are available free on the internet. Even language courses etc. Some people invest in a 50$ scanner, borrow books from the libraries and copy the books that are not on the internet.

I don't know how they gather such numbers, as many/most? Poor Children will never be reported to a Doctor for simple anemia to enter the Statistics.
and ""32% of the poor children"" is a number which I see much to low, MUCH to low.
I spent my Times and once in a while still spend time in the circles of the real poor, the ones who have to search their food meal by meal and day by day with many meals skipped as nothing been found, it is almost impossible for children to grow up under such conditions without getting anemia, they all catch it once in a while, hence every woman on the streets of the "poor" will know what to do once it hit again. and it is not just the children.
just 32% may be a correct estimate within the lower midclass tho.

you know very well that the poor families do not bring their kiddies to a Doctor for statistic's sake for a simple anemia.
the Secretary in charge for publishing such stats/ridiculous lies should get taken away his/her post in thye government cause it's just a waste of public money which could be used to feed a lot of poor children properly.

Don't people know what function the liver carries out in the body? It filters poisons, and where are the poisons after the filtering process? In the damn liver. Why not just drink urine?

Liver is very nutritous ..... yes you may not like it but many people do.

Bought some fish and meat there also .... good. Not quite as cheap as buying off the truck with bargaining or looking round street stalls but convenient and social as you meet people every time.
Much cheaper than supermarkets.

Remember FishMan, if your cut yourself while in the wilderness and need to clean it ---- pee on it to flush it clean.

Urine is totally sterile....

Miners trapped in cave-ins, drink it to stay alive - recycled water, if you will.
