That the 226 lives not be in vain

Old European custom. I have a picture of my great-grandmother seated in front of her casket, and one of my mother lying in hers. She looked so good it was hard to believe she was dead!

That the 226 lives not be in vain

Very well said, especially this part: The prevailing culture manifests itself in the reliance on divine protection rather than diligent enforcement of standards to prevent disasters. Every time I hear someone say "si Dios quiere", I want to respond that what Dios quiere is for you to use the...

    Jet Set Disaster

Aw, that's so very kind of him. Considering the clientele, no es mi culpa won't cut it this time. Perhaps the passports of the owner(s) and contractors responsible for the modifications made to the structure should be suspended for the time being.

NEW: "Ministry of Speed Bumbs" (Ministerio de Reductores de Velocidad)

Says a lot about D.R. when your joke is so believable. New overpaid minister, 80 cousins on the payroll, brother-in-law gets contract, etc.

Somos Pueblo: Where are the clothes of the person of interest in the missing Indian woman case?

"Eduardo Sanchez Tolentino (El Piro) and Ricardo Ripoll complained on Somos Pueblo that missing Dominicans have yet to get the same widespread efforts of the authorities to locate a person and solve the case." Long overdue statement.

Charles Schwab or other American banks

I live in NY but visit frequently. They obviously know when I'm in D.R. because of the ATM transactions, and it hasn't been an issue. In my opinion, don't tell anyone anything they don't need to know. There are some expats who live in D.R. but still have a home address (U.S., Canada, E.U.)...

Charles Schwab or other American banks

I have a Schwab checking account. I don't use my debit card often, but when I do they refund the ATM fee. Never an issue. I don't know what a global account is, so I can't help with that. Your post sounds like you're moving to D.R. If so, perhaps they won't mail documents/cards/checks there, but...

Real Estate Agent santiago or SD

This has to be the most polite "call out" I've ever heard, and being raised in the Bronx I've heard more than a few. Absolutely sublime. Nice job!

There's dumb, and then there's really dumb.

I agree, but maybe officials aren't confident that it would reach it's destination. At least not all of it.
