Think the people....

have pretty much spoken and agree that it's time to declare the winner Latino and close the topic. Or at least let it go to thread heaven own its own.

Why not... nobody cares until the question is asked in the USA. Everywhere else doesn?t care as much as they do in the US.
In different countries in Latin America, they only care about your nationality. It is very obvious if your are white, Indian or black.... nobody ask you they just know and everybody is happy the Black is Black, the Indian is Indian and the White is White.... I have never heard such thing as an Afro-south American, Native South American.
What I did hear is "cholo" which is a mestizo, and the "moreno - mulato" is just negro.
One great thing I noticed about the DR the same thing I noticed in Brazil, is that people mix and the future generations are better looking.
I agree 100% with Golo, at the end everything is about status, and your place in society and how well you handle yourself before the world of different status and nationalities. But again whatever makes you happy.

Regards,

Jorge

I have another daughter coming next month.

And I am the ONLY one in the family not concerned about what "Color" she will be,what kind of "Hair" she will have, kinky or straight! Will her nose be wide(BAD!),or "Fina"(GOOD!)And VERY important, what color her eyes will be,blue and green are the "Best" colors!
Who came up with the phrase;"Mejorando La Raza" anyway??We KNOW who,Dominicans!!!
I remember when the nurse brought me my first born son in Boston,25 years ago.She Said,as she "unwrapped" him from his blanket,"Ok,10 fingers,10 toes, and a penis, looks like a healthy baby boy!"
I can only imagine what people here are thinking when they see their baby for the first time,"Lets see,"Good Hair",10 points,Wide Nose,subtract 6 points,Too Dark,subtract 6 points,brown eyes,subtract 3 points,thats a total of -5 points,"Take Him Back!"

You know what? You can say whatever you want and you can put yourself in whatever slot you feel comfortable in but people are people and they will continue to call you what "THEY" think you are. So just be proud of what you are. We are all just humans ;)

Funny.

Like Anna says, people w/ always call you how they see you, so what's the point?

You know what my husband and I do? We are both mixed, and is complicated to go into details all the time (his parents are french/puerto ricans, he was born in France), Whenever we're at a get together, party, etc. we just say, we are dominican/puerto rican. End of story. Unless you have a moron in the crowd always demanding to know every detail, that works 80% of the time.

Edited to explain:
As far as legal documentation goes, (workpapers, etc.) I always classify myself as a Latina. I think is important to do that.

Most whites are racists behind closed doors?

As a white person, I take offense to AZB's statement. How does he know this? Is he behind most white people's closed doors? Sounds more like AZB is the racist against whites! All of which has nothing to do with the original question.

True.....that they can be pretty irritating [like NPR], but sometimes they hit the correct chord. How the hay did you score 100%?

Heard a funny radio skit driving thru North Carolina last month....a pretend Schwartzeneger was commenting about how he learned to ignore skin color while sitting on "the commandant's -- eeerrr, dad's -- knee....and that his dad said that the "real indicator isn't skin color, but rather are the noses and lips." Amost drove into a ditch laughing so hard.

what a mang? of concepts! i've been perusing these posts and couldn't help jumping in. i love the depth of the humor and the relentless honesty of some of you. its clear that socio-cultural assumptions about ethnicity vary from one observer to another. inside and outside of the population seeking definition. golo's reductionistic, yet on-target, meta-analysis of social stratification in the DR is a good example of relativity. on the one hand it reveals a classification that has meaning within the DR, that although it is influenced by DNA, it is ultimately defined by a variety of social factors that is best seen as a "class differential' issue. on the other hand it has little, if any meaning to outsiders. its clear that many dominicans can see themselves one way or another as per their individual ancestries, but can't help how others view us -regardless of the term, Latino, Hispanic, West Indian*, Caribe?o**, Antillano***, etc. the nationality (Dominican) as a title of identity seems most adequate in my opinion-even if some of us do not fit the more typical phenotypes of the island.

i am tordok. this is my first post so please be brutal in your mockery of my comments.

*this is how Dominicans were listed on Ellis Island records during the early XX century migrations from the DR.
**this is what most Spaniards, and many of our South American cousins (Argentineans, Chileans and high class Peruvians) call us Dominicans, Cubans and Puerto Ricans.
***this is what we would be called today if Eugenio Mar?a de Hostos dreams of a "Confederaci?n de Las Antillas" had ever been achieved (of politically uniting Cuba, DR and PR).

Criss Colon ....Masto of the comments on www.pbs.org/race were pretty accurate. From being in the states this is the reality of most minorities 2nd generation in the US. I under stand you might see this as liberal patronizing but hey the truth hurt. it intrigues me that so many dominicans and latinos/hispanics denie their african heritage. WHen the Moors who conquered spain italy and greece for 800 years mixewd with them.....yet people still deny african blood like it is some kind of sin. Even though puerto ricans embrace thier african part of their heritage with taino . Some Dominicans go out of their way to deny thier African ancestry.....Even if it didn't originate in the DR it probably did from their Spanish ancestor from spain from the moors......This was the whole point of the website and point of me posting it to this post.
The whole racial category thing does not make since and I enjoyed you joke (and some of your posts) but really no one can get that game of name that race exactly right..No way. Hel in me family we range from white looking to black to in betwwen it is all gentics (one on my uncle has freckles). I mean if you have black blood you can't be what your not so get over it and live with what you got!

By the way is it just me or most of the cubans in the states that always refer to the Haitianization of Cuba (since now it is about 70%black).they always take a Republican stance because of kennedy the helms burton act etc......(they think the repubs actually like them) And are always making fun of liberals(TonyC).
Most of the cubans that look more white I know dont even call themselves latino or hispanic and if they do they are quick to also check the whtie box to fit in . hahahaha

Ps: I am independant.

So if you are of Spanish ancestry your are not white? Do you know that not all of Spain was conquered by the Moors? Do you even know what a Moor is? Do you know that the term African refers to a person from a geographical location not a race? Do you know that Egyptians are Africans also? Berbers? Morroccans? Do you know you can be white and African at the same time?

Do you even have a grasp of what Politics are all about or are you just another wannabee jealous of the Cubans success wherever they go? I encourage all Dominicans, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans to stick with the Democrats.

impressive...and I'm not kidding. Does anyone have an idea about why Cubans do/did so well and others not? Some sort of financial advantage when they came to the US? Clung together and assisted each other the way Chinese [orientals] and Jews do?

I hope that the several moderators don't eliminate this thread as not being DRish enough.

I don't have time for a history lessons but they look pretty black to me as far as "racial classifications go"

I have met berber people as blacker as me and they refer to them selves as white. Chris colon made a good point one persons brown is anothers black in fact ask what a wasp thinks of anyone near the mediteranean south of the swedish alps! In other words just because we can call ourselves withe on paper does not mean your white. Saudi arabians , egytptians and etionpians geneticall are almost Idnetical . They look the same to but Ironicall the ethiopians have to label themselves black like it is some read"Social " tag. Hey pasha do you think that was impressive
I would love to call myself white and aquire all the social afdvatages it entagles but I can't jealous of the Cubans not hardly ha I have my own buisness and my family has for decade!

What are we arguing as long as we all are still spanish speaking (read not from spain) we are all still hispanic latino Right?

At least I know where your heads at!
