There are places I'd ride a bike, esp a mountain bike on back dirt roads, but riding on even a small highway such as between Cabarete and Sosua is id?ocy. Besides the risk, it's too damn hot to be getting around by pedal power.

Went to the casino at Sosua Bay Casino last night and there were all somber faces, asked what happened and they said two of the girls working there were among the dead in that accident.... !?!

I was shocked, I knew them very well, they worked there for years and were very friendly, always smiling and in fact both were promoted in the last year or so and weren't dealing much but acting as pit bosses and supervisors, it is just so so sad....couldn't believe it....

I didn't quite understand because they also have a mini-bus service for staff, but apparently that is for the Puerto Plata. At 6am they had finished their shift and were on their way home.... one day here with us and the next....!!!

They showed us their pictures and we recognised them right away, very popular girls and very pleasant, usually on the blackjack tables, unbelievable - RIP...

The problem is, everyone is "broken up" ,...AFTER the accident, but not BEFORE!!!!
LITTLE TO NOTHING IS DONE TO prevent THE ACCIDENTS!!!

I sort of understand Dominican crazy driving. I cannot understand why pedestrians constantly walk behind my car when I am just starting to back up, or in the process. Its not just a once it a while thing. Is there something missing up there? I know they live in the moment and do not think ahead but it happens too often for it to be intentional. Is it just me?

Wonder if the single occupant victim was wearing his seat belt. Many people think they just help. Way more than that. Seat belt combination along with air bags on a modern car will flat out save your life in the vast majority of traffic accidents. Just stopping being ejected is a biggie. Ejections are nearly always fatal. Just my personal opinion but I like large vehicles especially four wheel drives with the extra axle up front. To me its physics that when a big thing hits a little thing its usually better to be in the big thing. All else being equal of course.

i think that seat belt and airbags were not much of help in this particular case. although i have seen cars in a worse state where the driver resulted unscratched but miracles are rare...

I looked again at Jumbos excellent pictures and the white car fatality does not have a belt that I am able to see. This MAY have been a survivable accident for this guy. You can stand the g forces but what kills you is the car being crushed into you and the steering wheel delivering fatal forces to the chest area. The occupant area looks like it still has space. Notice the accordion like crush effect? This crush effect is designed into the car to absorb the impact without getting into the occupant area. No seat belts, hi speed, head on you will be impaled on the steering wheel delivering massive trauma to your chest, especially your heart. When the car comes to a sudden halt the unrestrained occupants are still moving at the same speed within the car.
So you are doing 80, head on accident you are still doing 80 inside the car until you hit the steering wheel, dash area. You cannot survive the hit. Wearing belts there is no hit.

i was in the automobile insurance business for nearly 30 years, and i have seen more wrecks than most people. nobody could have walked out of the driver?s side of this wreck.when you hit hard enough to bend the upper roof rail that badly, we are talking fatalities.

look at Jumbos picture of the deceased driver. the occupant space seems clear in the Peugeot but no belts visible on the guy. I believe that safety build requirements are much higher on passenger cars than on those mini sort of vehicles used as taxis

Normal Behaviour

I cannot understand why pedestrians constantly walk behind my car when I am just starting to back up, or in the process. Its not just a once it a while thing.

Normal Dominican behaviour.
The moment you start to back up, is when they walk to block you.
Same with motos being parked 2 inches behing your back bumber.
The idea is, that you touch them.... :bandit:
It's then when you'll see a dozen witnesses appear from nowhere....

Thanks DV8. Somehow I got the idea the car was a Peugeot but its a Toyota. I am pretty sure that the safety requirement for passenger cars are much more stringent than what is required for the vehicles that are used to carry passengers here in the DR. The manufacturers of these vehicles are always looking for ways to reduce costs and if a vehicle is used for commercial carry or freight predominately then the safety standards are greatly reduced. Putting all the safety into todays cars is very expensive. Sometimes a bit of good luck helps. That is one lucky Polish guy to have survived such a bad crash. Tell him to run out and buy a lottery ticket before the luck disappears. btw, anyone see any belts on the deceased Toyota driver?

this might sound strange, but that is not a hard hit. look at the steering wheel. if the guy saw what was about to happen, and got his head down to steering wheel level, he would be able to walk away from this. what appears to have happened here is that someone rear ended the car, and drove it under a parked truck. some beams under the truck peeled off a lot of tin, making it look far worse than it was. the destroyed rear end, plus the fact that it is under the truck , make for an ugly picture, but the passenger compartment looks intact.

Multi-Deaths-Accidents

These multi-deaths "accidents" happen daily, some in remote places do not make it to the press.

Here is another one, resulting in 6 deaths near Nagua:
6 muertos y un herido muy grave durante accidente en autopista Nagua a Matanza: Un cad?ver fue a parar al techo de una vivienda
One of the victims had been catapulted on a roof, where he was found in the morning...

This "accident" was also reported yesterday. Three died, among them 2 young men (17, 18), who had just come from the US.
EN CARRETERA SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS- NAGUA: Accidenta deja tres muertos y una menor herida

Exactly, that's what I thought. But not too much surprises me here anymore.

Faithful Signs

I have never seen a 'padre de la familia' with a safety belt put on.
They rather believe in their windscreen signs like "Dios me protege".... :lick:
