The expansion of 4 lanes from Puerto Plata Sosua probably included 4 lane bridges. That would also necessitate demolishing many structures along the way. For the bridge in question, I have no idea if 4 lanes are part of a grander plan or not. They should do whatever they can immediately to move on.

Question for the legal experts. Does Dominican law have any claim that land along a river is public like it does for ocean front land?

It's not like there are any buildings right on the river and the new bridge design didn't make it seem like it would be that much wider that buildings would need to come down but perhaps they do need some more space. Although this is the DR and sometimes what makes sense doesn't happen

Perhaps it's all an excuse because they know there is no possibility this bridge will get completed in the proposed time frame so they throw out a "land dispute" as the reason for the delays.

So what get's completed first

A. The bridge
B. The plazas at Playa Sosua
C. The new hospital
D. Delay upon delay won't see any of them completed anytime soon.

I know what my answer is.
But I am not a DR1 "expert" and have no inside information either.

If I recall correctly, the original bridge was one lane in each direction. If they're smart, the new one will be two lanes in each direction, which may explain why more land is necessary.

It was learned that the break in the work to erect such an important infrastructure work is mainly due to the fact that an economic agreement has not been reached with the owners of the land located at both ends of the bridge.​


PUERTO PLATA.- Construction work on the new bridge over the Camú river in the Sabaneta de Cangrejos community in the eastern part of this Atlantic province has been paralyzed for more than two weeks.

This situation has generated much criticism from the townspeople, since hundreds of citizens question "the neglect of the authorities to start and finish the bridge that connects Puerto Plata with the General Gregorio Luperón International Airport and the tourist communities of Sosúa and Cabarete."

It was learned that the break in the work to erect such an important infrastructure work is mainly due to the fact that an economic agreement has not been reached with the owners of the land located at both ends of the bridge, for which the Government could proceed with the expropriation of those estates.

Also, the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (EDENORTE), have not yet been able to move the high-voltage cable networks that pass in the same perimeter where the new viaduct will be built.

Ironically, this Wednesday, April 26, marks one year since the old metal bridge that existed there suffered a failure in its structure after breaking a crosshead, for which the authorities prohibited the passage of heavy vehicles and enabled an alternate route Puerto Plata -Montellano-Sosúa and vice versa.

“It would be gratifying to know the opinion of an official who can explain the great mystery that surrounds the construction of that bridge. I cannot understand how a work of vital importance for the development of the region is neglected”, said Mr. Félix Aramis Ciriaco Green.

Through calls to radio and television programs, in addition to Facebook and other social networks, there are multiple opinions from citizens who urge the government authorities to put more effort into giving a definitive solution to this problem since it is urgent that the new bridge be built once and for all.

Se supo que el receso de las labores para erigir tan importante obra de infraestructura se debe mayormente a que no se ha llegado a un acuerdo económico con los propietarios de los terrenos ubicados en ambos extremos del puente.

Why a four lane bridge when it's a two lane rd. that would result in people passing on the bridge and accidents.

Well if there are any future plans to expand the road to 4 lanes sometime in the future it would make sense to complete the bridge with 4 lanes now as it would be much more efficient and cost effective to do it now rather than essentially have to rebuild it to expand it to 4 lanes later should that road construction expansion ever happen. They wouldn't have to use it currently as a 4 lane bridge though

Apparently the rumour is true. My wife went to see the river today while waiting for our son to finish school. And a guard told her that they are trying to negotiate the land to be able to build a 4 lane bridge. They want to remove ALL of the houses built by the road, on both sides. So it's quite a few people to "bribe" to move.

There are plans to expand the road between Puerto Plata and Cabarete to four lanes. When that will happen is anyone's guess, but it will happen... eventually.

I think it would had been cheaper to build a two lane bridge and when the road is expanded built another parallel two lane bridge next to this one. The time uncertainty of the expansion of the road makes this the better option, IMO. They build a four lane bridge and who csn say when they expand the road the bridge is beyond its usage life and it need to be replaced?

But if they build a bridge without a lifespan of 50 - 70 years they are wasting their money.
Even on Dominican time the road should be expanded by then.
I understand many posting on DR1 are of an advanced age.
That means the road expansion might not occur within their lifespan.

None of us who can read this forum will live to see it become a 4 lane road. We will be lucky if they can repave it when it falls apart again.
Drive through Sosua Abajo and Charamicos and look at the buildings that would have to be demolished, same near the Grand Parada and Montellano.
And if they did make it 4 lanes Dominicans would all still try to drive around on the shoulder.
