miguel, spot on, if it was not for minovio i would have never lived here because this country sucks.
but, there you have it - the power of love.

sad you can see i complain - which i do but you can't see the humour, well, whatever, dominicans would not recognize humour even if it slapped them in a face with a wet cedula.

i don't care for DR to change i just care to live somewhere else one day...

Miguel is correct. I agree with him 100%. DV8 hates the country and its people. She just admitted it right here. How do these people end up in the DR??? We could sure use some more people that are damn happy to be there.... Please move with minovio to England or something. Then we can stop hearing about how much you hate the country and stop hearing you bashing its people.

I did not care about your original post. I though it was funny. But then when you respond like this it makes me change my mind. You do hate the DR and its people.

But I don't care about what you or anyone else thinks about DR or its people. I just wanted to say that I agree with Miguel in order to let everybody know that he is not the only one that feels this way. Please remember that Miguel and I are two of the few Dominicans on this board. You cannot expect us to think the same and agree with most of what you say.

While I thought the post was tongue in cheek I also have felt, even though never commented, that some of DV8's posts seem to be somewhat (how do I put it???) Anti-Dominican I guess...She does seem to complain a lot about life in The DR. I've never met her and I'm sure she's a fine lady in person, but it does seem she's not very happy living in The DR by the tone of some of her posts. BTW, she's not the only one in this board who does that...

No. She is not the only one. I don't want to put down DV8 or any other member. I think from DV8's posts and from what everyone else is saying that she must be a nice young lady. I was just stating my opinion and agreeing with Miguel. Not to put you down dv8. I don't think you are a bad person.

dv8 is a nice person. She has a whicked sense of humour too. BUT she is the first to admit she does not like living here, she does not like the country.

She is here because she met an amazing man and fell in love. Period. She will either learn to adjust or they will move elsewhere or ........... well not really sure actually......LOL

You know, I think every foreigners goes through this at some point or another. When I arrived in the US, I felt like I was in a different planet. I complaint about the food, how quiet it was, how free is suppose to be but at the same time you can't be loud, had to tone down my voice, cannot pick a fruit or flower without getting arrested, call someone by yelling "oye que lo que" and not have someone look at you with an hairy eyes. I even complaint about the construction materials used on homes. The walls where made of carton and not concrete or solid wood. Sometime, I said I hated the US and its people but now I love it. Moral of the story is give DV8 time to adjust, she will come around and will probably miss the DR when she leaves. The best therapy to a problem, is to talk about what is bothering you and trying to see the humor in it and I think that is what she is doing.

ok, let's pretend it is a dv81.com. :tired: i will be the first to admit i don't like it here. i didn't like it in london for the first two years. i did not like it in polonia either. i am just a born whiner.

i do not HATE DR. i just believe you cannot actually LIVE here as a foreigner and NOT complain. it is so different from our home countries. some people just learn to keep their mouth shut. i don't.

bear in mind that i am trying: i have a job, i am learning the language, i am insatiably curious about dominican ways and ask lots of silly newbie questions. one day i may get used to living here but i will never get used to the actual fact of LIVING as such (sorry if i get too philosophical here, after all it's my profession).

i will not apologize for being who i am, i never moan about DR maliciously, even when i say that the government project of "first dominican in space in 2075" should be closely followed by "all dominicans in space in 2076".

so please, take my posts for what they are: sarcastic - yes but viciously spiteful - not.

thank you.

Human nature being what it is, when someone "bashes" a country and its citizens using "humor" and its told by a foreigner it takes a totally different complexion. It looks like your future in the DR will be a frustrating one. There are ways to be a bit more sensitive when relating your stories but that will only come with time as you mature.

Btw you indicate that you did not like London, perhaps you can share some sarcastic observations of the British way.;)

I don't see what the big fuss is, but reading between the lines I can see the positive side of her observation. For instance,

"in SD my abugado picked me up and drove me to the meeting point with puerto rican girl smugglers, or at least something you would have expected from the lowlives hideout that from any government agency." Here she is trying to say that she got first class transportation/security service. She was picked up at the bus station, escorted by an undercover agent posing as a puerto rican smuggler, and hand delivered to government officials for VIP service. You won't get this type of service in the US, unless you were a very important person.

"narrow street with overflowing rubbish bins behind ferreterias and some repuestos garages leads to cement and wood warehouse that looks nothing like any official building and everything like a background from steven segal movies. " Here she is trying to say that the Dominican Government is fiscally responsible. The government is not spending too much money on constructing or leasing a state of art building where a cheaper facility (shack) will do, and on top of that the government is very sensitive to the need of its poor by providing the services right in the under developed areas. In the US, the poors are intimidated by the fast pace of downtowns and town centers that sometimes they forgo getting services from their government.

". snap - the fat woman takes you passport and fills up two sheets of paper, snap - another fat woman (how do they get into the room?) with a tooth braces (betty la fea) takes your pictures, misspells your names, takes a scan of your fingers and gives you few more sheets of paper, snap - thin woman put a few stamps and gives you... a piece of paper." Here what she is trying to say, that despite the DR being a 3rd world country, its people are not starving, they are fat. Also, she is saying that people makes good money here, that they have excess cash for cosmetic items such as braces. Furthermore, she is saying that Dominican fats are physically fit, and more acrobatic. In contrast to the US, where heavy set people wobbles as they walk and if they fall down, it takes two or more people and an ambulance to pick them up

"at this point it turned out they run out of plastic and do cedulas will be released today." Here, she is trying to say that the government is so committed to environmental issues, that public offices have a quota on plastic items. In her case, the office used up their quota on plastic in hope to discourage people from coming back and taking another plastic thing into the fragile environment.

"i get the residence although honest to god i have no idea what i paid 1000 pesos for since i have to go back to SD anyways." Here, she is trying to say, that Dominicans are capitalistic, business oriented individuals, that make a profit even when they are not expected. In this case the office/person made $1000 pesos eventhough there was no production. They give Wall Street the run for their money/COLOR]

"worse still, what was supposed to take "half an hour" took 4" Here, she is trying to say that government personnel are so committed to customer service, that they take it to the next level. They love their clients that they spend extra time nurturing them and making sure they understand everything. They truely love the company of their clients.

Now this is funny...

dv8, I love your sense of humour. Keep up the good work, keeping us entertained, as most of the Brits on this site do.

Wow, great going DV8, only one day with "Residency" and just a "PAPER" cedula and already you have a job.

I heard the term "Fast" woman before, but thought it meant something else!!!

;) lol

PS: Some U.S. English Americano person could come back on your comment about:

".....bear in mine that i am trying", with "Yes, very trying!"

Which has a whole difference meaning....

Little off topic but I have a question pertaining to cedulas.

Can a native Dominican get a cedula outside of the DR, lets say at a Dominican consulate?

I believe so. My wife got her passport renewed in Orlando.

I would think not, machines that can print the cedula's are probably not located outside the DR. While passports are readily available documents. Heck, there are many times inthe DR you can't even get a cedular, driver's license, residency card, etc because the machines are out-of-order.

Well, well, well, another one who didn't get her English humour. I am just going to sit here and wait for "The Defender" to reply to you, hehe.

Actually, this thread became such a joke that I decided to just let it go. Let me explain why:

1- dv8 complaining, as usual, about the DR and it's people.
2- Me saying that she is always complaining about the DR and it's people.
3- "The Defender" saying that I need to grow up and that she doesn't complain and is just using English "humour".
4- The OP still saying that she doesn't like the DR and that she in fact likes to complain all the time.
5- "The Defender" still saying that she doesn't complain and that it's just English "humour". I mean, the woman is saying that she likes to complain and is basically (note: basically) agreeing with me but "The Defender" still says that she is not complaining. Perhaps he knows her more than she knows herself.

suarezn:

We made the same observation. Perhaps she is a nice person. But IN MY OPINION (NOTE: IN MY OPINION) she is Anti-Dominican.

Suarezn, if you know this old saying, you will know "from where I am coming from": "tanto dio la gota en la roca que le hizo un hoyo"

Planner:

I understand what you said about "she met an amazing man". There are MANY out there that no amount of amazing men/women and no amount of money would make them live in a country that they don't care for, in a country where they will be miserable, a country where every single thing NOT done they way they are used to, would bother them. SOME would rather stay the hell home, find a person in their backyard and not be unhappy all the time.

Bingo, bingo, BINNNNNNNGO!!.

Many moons ago, I asked a black College friend of mine the following:

"Why is it that you get so annoyed when whites say that "N" word but never gets mad when a black person calls you "N"?".

His reply: "Because non-blacks use it to bring us down, to feel superior. We use it just to make fun of ourselves. We can use it, nobody else can".

All you smarties out there, need I say more?.

Why would Mr Last World know that. Mr Last Word doesn't need or have a cedula. I don't think Mr Last Word ever had one.

For some reason, that great country song, "Stand by your man" comes to mind. I wonder why?.

Whatever happened to the English humour, is it gone now that others have said that they didn't see the so-called humour neither?.

Oh well, let's keep on talking about cedulas then.......

Too funny...

Has Mr. Last Word just defined himself? Because I sure didn't.........hehehehe:cheeky:
Again, I don't know why that song, "Stand up, I mean, stand by your man" keeps on popping ito my head?.

Come on Ginnie, where's that famous English humour. Did it take a few to agree with me in order for you guys to wipe that smile off your faces?.

Ohh, the insanity.

This is wayyyy too funny, mommy coming to the rescue, hehe.

Btw: nothing personal, just voicing my opinions and having some "DomYork" (as AZB would say) fun while at it.

Miguel, oops, I mean Mr Last Word. Or Mr Mick Jagger, wahahaha!!!!.
