Oh no? And why is that? It's because they dont wallow and lament. They are too busy making things work for them. They dont sit around screaming "racism" and looking for acceptance or sympathy or what have you. They make it a point of rallying together and pushing ahead.

Larry (by the way, I am not a Jew, I am just calling it as I see it)

edited to add: When I was in high school, I working in a supermarket. It was owned by a Jew who was in a concentration camp when he was a child. He always wore long sleeves because he had a seriel number burned into his forearm. His entire family died in the camp. He came to the USA all alone as a teenager and now owns a string of supermarkets. I never heard him blaming not being able to get ahead on the fact that he was Jewish and his family had been slaughtered. He didnt look for an excuse to point fingers. He took control over his own life.

Take from that what you will.

Larry please stop,
that is not what we are talking about here.

We are talking about where people came from and how.
People of slaves in the new world is the beginning of a New Culture, a new history of people's way of life in music art and who they are. An undocumented history that only goes as far a a Ship Captains Log book and newly created names of Afrikan slaves.
The pride about it all is being alive and talking and reflecting about it.

the Holaucost for the Jews was not the the start and beginning of the Jewish people. That was a point in time of an oppressed but indentifiable and tracable group of people who still have a documented history over several thousand years. Something they should be proud of.

BIG BIG Difference and you are definately OFF TOPIC

So give people at least that dignity to talk about that. Sorry people of color cant romanticize and talk about King Arthur, Castles, Pirate Ships and Robin Hood.

For all of those that are not familiar with the Dominican Culture, or at least are starting to learn about it.

The Dominican society does not accept having a culture iinfluence by Africans. Not just the race factor but also all cultural aspects.
You have to understand that our cultural values are praised only if there were European.

Being Blanco is "Lindo" and unfortunately being Black for us is being "Feito."

What we need is a Dominican Mohamed Ali, to make Dominican society overcome this low-steem problem amongst us.

Those who have not experienced it, can not express themselves.

Bienvenido a La Republica Dominicana.......

Are you crazy,

What do you think the basis of the food and music Domincans champion with so much pride come from. Give me a break.
The only think you chapion of Spain is the language. Wake up.

Hey i don't think dominican are just a person of color; i have dominican friends with blue eyes, light skin, brown eyes, light skin, brown eyes, dark skin, black eyes, light skin, black eyes, dark skin.. hey they are all dominican. I think dominican is some one borned in the DR to at least a dominican father or mother or borned some where else to both dominican parents (although the dominican law does not state so). In both cases they will probably look more dominican than anybody else.

You are absolutely right. I should have recognized that.
I was focused on the majority but not to downplay the minority (in numbers).

Leona..

i agree. However, i think a dominican is any one that is born with a dominican father, or mother, or both in the DR or is born outside the DR with some dominican blood. Even if there great grandmom is dominican and no one else is, as long as they participate in the struggles and blight of a dominican and accept dominican culture as their own, then they are dominican. You cannot be dominican and not accept the culture and struggles. Just like you cannot be afro american and say that u are not discriminated against

dominicans are multiracial, they shouldn't have to choose just one

I agree with a lot of what El Moreno had to say. I realize that when many Dominicans come to the US, they are seen as Black, but that is due to our misguided "1/16th" perception of race. Earlier in this debate, someone mentioned that people should identify with what they feel comfortable with. To me, this is the most important consideration. If you identify more with your mother's side and her race and culture and not as much as your dad's side, I think its ok to consider yourself as mainly from her side, although you shouldn't discount the mixture of both cultures.

If someone has Arabic, Spanish, Taino, and African blood, it doesn't just make them "black" only and that if they're not proud or id themselves as that race, then they are wrong according to some people. That's just not fair to their multiracial and multicultural background. I have Dominican friends in all shades from Indio to Blanco, but they still do not look the same as mulatos from the US because of their multiracial background, not just black and white. Dominican pride and culture is different than the black american culture and the african culture and each should be viewed in it's own category, not just as all part of the same group. In reference to the words "latino" or "hispanic" I realize that those words lump a lot of different cultures together, but I think they should be considered a legitimate race/ethnic category because most latinos are very multicultural and multiracial.

Larry (by the way, I am not a Jew, I am just calling it as I see it)

Take from that what you will.

Larry why don't you shut the **** up? You don't know what you're talking about and you sound stupid.

Have you ever called someone about an apartment, they say it's ready to be rented but then when you show up all of a sudden it's rented? And then you send your white friend back and now it's available? That's racism.. As a black.. what do you do? Make it work for you or do you call a duck a duck?

Have you ever gone into a major clothing store oh just for ha ha's let's say "The limited" and have them not want to accept your check, ask you for your phone number and call that number right in front of you just to see if the phone was cut on as a sign you could afford to pay your phone bill so just maybe the check will go through. And then you go back a few days later and observe a white customer writing a check with no problems? That's racism.. what do you do? Make it work for you or do you call a duck a duck.

Have you ever started a job the same day with four white male coworkers and when it's time for a raise the four while male coworkers get theres but you didn't get one and when you inquire why, the boss picks up your review, reads it in front of you and says... Oh sorry, I must not have read your review correctly your raise will go in effect in two weeks... How about he didn't even read the review at all? what do you do? Make it work for you or call a duck a duck?

Have you ever been in graduate school and where a grade was based on class participation and you just about carry every ******* class on your back with your participation but when grades come you only get a B- and you have to request a hearing to just to get the A you rightfully deserve and then have the Dean tell you to your face he's sorry for what you've been through and he believes this was blatant discrimination. What do you do? Make it work for you or call a duck a duck?

Have you ever walked into a car dealership and be virtually ignored and have several white customers walk in after you and have the salesmen jump to their feet to help them while you're still standing there waiting to be served, so you finally say in a loud voice, "Gee how do I get some service?" .. After all you can't afford a brand new car right? So what do you do? Make it work for you or call a duck a duck?

Have you ever gone on a job interview and waited in the lobby for the hiring supervisor.. now you're the ONLY person in the lobby okay, dressed like you're ready to be interviewed and everything and someone comes down at the previous appointed time He looks around, even looks out the ******* window but never asks are you such and such here for the interview.. So he goes back upstairs. You wait a few more minutes, decide to call and tell the hiring supervisor you're downstairs he says he'll be right down and it's theh same asshole that acted like you were invisible the first time? And this has happened more than once AND to some of your friends in the same field.. After all you possibly couldn't have this type of education and work experience that's typically reserved for WHITE MALES...What do you do? Make it work or call a duck a duck.

Nobody wants your ******* sympathy... Quit acting like racism does NOT exist and everyone has the same advantages in this world. Quit acting like the minds of White Americans are so clear and free of bias that they treat everyone equal! Because this is NOT the case. So when you see blacks banning together and crying RACISM, it's because it usually IS you bonehead. Blacks are still OPPRESSED and the only thing we can do is to keep righting for equality because it's not there yet...

So just shut up and quit commenting on things you have no knowledge about.

CW, I hope you feel better now? Now that you got that off your chest!

Larry, don't reply, it will just get deleted. Don't think it's discrimination, I hate everyone, regardless of color or social status :)

Can we get back on topic before the moderator comes in and kills the thread.

I feel nothing either way Rob.. That's your buddies Larry and Criss that's always coming up in threads about color and turning them into something they were never about.

We were all having a nice, intellectual, cordial conversation- exchanging thoughts and ideas and provoking stimualting thoughts when the short bus twins came up in here twisting stuff all around. Larry was banned once, you'd think he'd know how to act by now. I guess his kind never learn huh?

Larry you can respond to me via PM if you'd like. I feel it's my duty as a fellow American to help you see the light.

Carl only 16 % of Dominican population are black, 73% are mulatto or mestizo and 11% are white. Now, 84% are of black african ancestry.

I know! I've read the official stats,it's just that.........one gets an entirely different interpretation when visiting the DR.You know,I went there armed with all of the official stats, yet come away with a different opinion of the place.

Further complicating this matter is that there's scant few 100 %pure blacks in the america's anymore(outside of haiti). The majority of blacks have some degree of white and or native ancestry. If I recall correctly, the average black in the u.s. is approx 20% caucasian and/or native american.Perhaps that's where the confusion begins.Or maybe why some dominicans look like u.s. native blacks and vice verse.

The same holds true for most of the english speaking carribean, with the spainish speaking carribeans being somewhat more racially mixed.

The bottom line in my book,is that most blacks in the west(although mostly of african origin)are mixed.So........who who really is or isn't black amongst them? Most people just go by physical appearance when determining someone's race or at least which racial category an individual fits into moreso.

Take care!

Now, to be mistaken for black, one has to have african traits. such as, darker skin then mulatto, or more tight curlier hair. sometimes its the shapes of our noses, or sometimes its the bone structure of the face.

Mistaken for black? Give me a break. The majority of Black Americans are just as if not more mixed than Dominicans. My grandparents are from the DR and I see firsthand how Dominicans are in denial of their African heritage. The main difference in attitude is because here in the U.S., the one drop rule lumped us all into one category. In the DR, if you aren't as dark, have a slightly sharper nose, somewhat straighter hair (no wonder so many dominicans spend hours at the salon), etc... then you are not black. Whenever I go to the DR my friends their kill me with their perspectives on race. It works for them while they are on the island but that logic gets blown away once you are off the island. At least in the U.S. those who are doing the majority of the discriminating are not your lighter skinned aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Man!!!!!! I commute home from work and a few hours later, I read the past posts since my last, and you guys just gone plum loco. hahahahaha.

I hope they don't close the topic. Its getting pretty good.

Man, topics on race just always keeps things going here.

Now, lets get back to some of the Dominicans here in denial.........

hahah just playin'

I hear you ALB, the statistics definately don't match what I see when i'm in the DR.
