The murder RATE is calculated per-capita.

They do it by city, because within a given country the PER-CAPITA murder rate varies a lot.
Obviously in many small towns in the middle-of-nowhere in the USA (and other countries) the murder rate is tiny, which may drag down the rate for the entire country. But that is irrelevant to people living in certain big cities. Country-wide rates are irrelevant to most people.

Anyhow, the fact is that not a single Dominican city is among the top-50 by murder rate. By comparison, Honduras -- smaller than the DR by population -- has #1 and #5, while Jamaica -- even smaller by pop -- has #26, and Guatemala (only about 50% larger than the DR by pop) has #25. Obviously, population or physical size is not the issue. Besides, several countries have many cities in the list each, including Brazil with 19 in the top 50!. The US, from where many expats come into the DR, has 4 in the top 40.

Most of those cities are not places where many expats choose to live. Most of these murders are also gangrelated.

Would be more interesting to know how many expats/retires getting killed in the world and where? (DR would be higher than Honduras (besides Roatan) where you wont find many expats).

Sunny skies and shady characters comes to mind... huh?

I have had dinner at this couple's house.

As mentioned earlier, she was a sushi expert.
One year they rented a venue for an 'extravaganza'... the next year , they held it at home.

He mentioned something about going in to the fish business.

That's all I know...........

Fish and Vegetables. And apparently a few small companies in the Caribbean.

Bob was also in making pizzas it seems.

Sounds like an interesting man.

"THE CREATOR OF PIZZA BOB, PASSED AWAY

One of Aruba’s most colorful personalities, Pizza Bob, had passed away in tragic and cruel circumstances in the Dominican Republic where he lived for the past few years. Bob Tokarz came here from Chicago, his home town, and introduced us to yummy deep dish pizza with special artisanal Mozzarella, at a place he opened in Cura Cabai, around the Millennium. We immediately discovered that it was indeed the best pizza on the island, and we flocked to that little hole in the wall where Jeffrey baked the pizza and Bob talked about it. In his personal life, Bob and his lady-love Audrey Tromp were a well-matched pair. She was a sweetheart, with lots of family members in Aruba. She met Bob in San Martin and together they came here to spread the pizza gospel. He was eccentric, charismatic, enterprising, surprising, made friends as easily as he lost them, at one time selling 25% of Pizza Bob to five different buyers all at the same time. He was great at identifying potential partners and opening additional storefronts at Brickell Bay, on Eagle Beach, and in Tanki Flip. While he had a tumultuous relationship with veteran casino operator Mike Posner, his original on-island partner, he loved kids, and he had a passion for cards and casinos. He once won a giant jackpot at the Hilton Casino – that was many years ago when the Riu Antillas was a Hilton — and management is still scratching its head, wondering how that happened. Bob’s dream was to open a retirement home for elderly people and he thought he would get to do it in the Dominican Republic. But as he was making plans other projects involving fisheries and vegetable gardens popped up so that the village for the elderly with reasonably priced health care, remained on the drawing board. He did have excellent ideas, but he was not always a straight arrow about them. Audrey’s last prediction, a few days before she passed away, was to finally marry her Bob in 2016. May they rest in peace."

judging by the thread title, i would suspect that the gravamen of this thread is not simply the murder rate of a specific country, but the murder rate of foreigners. i have no supporting data, but i am willing to bet the farm that the murder rate of foreigners in the DR far exceeds anything in Jamaica. most murders in Jamaica have their genesis in political and drug factions warring against each other. tourists are usually not a part of the equation, unless they are a part of the gangs.

this thread is about a particular murder, not about murder rates in the world. if you want to discuss that start another thread.

Based on Frank12's post, maybe Pizza Bob made some enemies here in the DR. Selling 25% of his business to five different people would make somebody mad. Sounds like he was a wheeler dealer. I'm not saying he deserved to be murdered by any means.

I would be interested in ANY information.... thanks.
OK. Today's top rumor, superseding the other day's murder/suicide rumor, is that the jefe of security for Los Fallarones and his wife were the last two to have seen the deceased couple, for drinks, about a week ago. (Rumor has it there were 4 wine glasses found at the scene). Rumor says police went to senior watchiman's house this AM and found a shirt there with a whole lotta blood on it. I have little faith in any of these to be true, BTW.
One actual item: there were dozens of police up there this morning, a lot of commotion.

What evidence do you have of that? Have you read the previous posts? As stated elsewhere crime needs to be analized with a STATISTICAL PoV, as opposed to on emotional shock.

No evidence has yet been presented that the expat murder rate is much higher in the DR than in alternative countries. Plus, it seems that the way one of the victims did business may have made him more likely to fall victim in a violent situation. In other words, it may not have been a "random crime". Just read the previous posts.

Since this tragedy have there been upgrades to security at Los Farollones? We were planning to stay in this area in February
not sure if we will feel comfortable. Is this still a gated community?

yes gated.

Security guard was questioned & released... always was a rumor only.

As said earlier... the opinion is that this was not a random act.
There was purpose to it.

Actually I am not to sure about that. I can't say for sure, but I think/hope this case is different. These were not people doing the wrong thing, this is not just the average gringo getting killed under questionable circumstances or someone losing some money in a robbery. These people did a lot of good and knew a lot of people throughout the community. Also there are families back in the US that do have some influence, so maybe in this case there will be some real action. If that is correct (and I'm not sure, but hoping) the questions then becomes, will this just be a one off or will this lead to a clean up of the North coast for a while (or at least Cabrera area).
I did have conversations with some influential cabrerenos and at least the jist of it was that this was a last straw and something needs to be done now about the crime. It has been said before, but with the circumstances of this case, either they will do it now or it will never be done.
Hopefully something positive can come out of this unbelievably tragic situation.
Also, hopefully they will get the right persons and all involved (guard at the gate and others who may have been involved??) and not just a scapegoat to close the case quickly. Also anyone who aids the people in hiding should be held accountable - that definitely was not the case in the dutch murder case.

i remember yrs ago i was in a club,,dancing and in five minutes or less the police had come and rounded up every dom male inside...left 2 gringos and all the ladies.... they were doing an investigation....nothing came of it but it was interesting to see the club almost empty////no one paid their checks that nite

I live in Los Farallones and I am familiar with this couple and the security issues. First, it is clear this was not random and the take away from this horrible situation is to be careful of whom you associate. There is crime everywhere and so it is important especially in a foreign country that expats are aware of our surroundings and take the necessary steps to keep us safe. Los Farallones has strived to have some security in place and in many cases the residents are the ones that invite delinquents that endanger that security and the community.

There was a question as to if Los Farallones is improving security and the answer is yes. There is a concerted effort on many in the Cabrera area to increase security by lighting, security cameras, additional security personnel, etc. The main focus is on educating Dominicans and Expats alike to understand their surroundings and to realize although Cabrera and the Dominican Republic is a relatively safe place to live, the way you live and the people who you know, know you and your business can leave you vulnerable to attack wherever you live.

Spot on about people coming to the apartment don't matter how many time they "My friend." I was told many moons ago not to trust anyone I will live longer that way. Just to add some gringos don't want to listen to sound information, after the get the sad story from the Dominican "My friend" common sense is kick out the door.

I have people to my apt all the time. They aren't people I met in the hood, at a club, or on the street.

I have dominican friends that are teachers, doctors, musicians, professionals, and taxi drivers, blue collar guys, guys that own a few "torres" etc.

I will hang out with just about anyone. Won't have everyone know where I live. More than five though.
