Not much rain at the moment but, the strongest winds by far in the Marapica section of Puerto Plata. Power has gone out for only 5 minutes so far, during Irene.

It appears that the worst is over at 5:30 AM for our location. We and hopefully the rest Cabarete and the north coast escaped without much of a problem. Edenorte reports that they have cut power as a precaution. We have had much more rain and similar winds during thunderstorms than Irene brought to us. I don't think we had anything over 50 mph in our area west of Cabarete center. Just some drizzle and a stiff breeze here.

SANTIAGO: Wakes up to breezy, rainy day. The rains have been fairly benign throughout the night. There have been some "gusts", but nothing major.
It looks like the storm went a little more West than Northwest...which means that there was a lot of rain and wind for the area West of POP. Any reports...??

Hmm. Yesterday when the hurricane's center was some 50 km from Bavaro everything was calm, and now that it is almost in Puerto Plata we are getting all the rain and wind?

It's really caught me offguard. I was suppossed to go to Hig?ey yesterday, but postponed it for today. Now I realize that yesterday would have been a fine day to go, but today it's gonna be impossible.

Luckily we have plenty of sopa and rum left at home.

Glad to see that WNW movement. Anything is possible, but an hour later and not much is happening in Cabarete. Moderate winds and light rain. Hopefully Irene won't slap us with her back or bottom sides as she moves to the Bahamas and Carolinas. Winds have shifted to southerly, so the center seems to be passing at this time.

So, I'm trying to motivate myself to go to work in Sosua by public transport. Still a bit wet and windy but I don't think I can really justify staying at home on present conditions.....

Last night it rained somewhat in Santo Domingo, to tell from the wet potters. Before dawn there was a showing of lighting over the horizon, the clouds were very low and fluffy, almost felt one could reach out and touch them. Gusty wind, but nothing to topple the plants. At dawn, light winds, overcast skies. Probably today we will get the rains... so far, it has been quite dry.

Luperon area rain light gusty winds all night we get more rain and wind when a cold front goes through. The original forecast was for the storm to go right over us. I think these storms see the Dominican Republic and try to go some where else.

Sosua - Cabarete,
From yesterday morning to 8:00 am today a total of 3.4" in the rain gauge! As Windguy said less than some Thunderstorms! Still raining lightly.
Some leaf litter and garden plant damage but not much. Wind still a bit gusty but not more that 15kts. Irene made CAT2 overnight !

Power back on about 6 am

Never lost power at all yesterday or during the night in Central City Puerto Plata *knock on wood*. Seems to be wind gusts and steady rain, but nothing like I expected.

the northern portions of the dominican republic this morning. The
highest winds are likely to occur over areas of elevated terrain.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the southeastern

Storm surge...a storm surge will raise water levels by as much as

Ninapup, 08.54 hrs. No rain but wind is quite strong. I'm told that the wind will remain strong with some rain for the next 24 hours. Rude awakening during the night when a tree fell on the house but it doesn't seem to have done a lot of damage just a lot of mess. A pain to clear up it was one of those useless ones with a spiny trunk. I believe the worst has passed??? About cana I can't say much as I have not much experience with it.

Santo Tap?n is getting gusty winds and occasional light rain.

The clouds are moving west to east so we are in the cyclonic system of the storm but we are far enough away from it to avoid serious effects so far.

With these storms you never can tell. In 2004 Ivan made a complete button hook turn:

anyone know how bacardi island made out... have not seen a post in a while, the satellite map looks like the peninsula and Cayo Levantado was right under the western edge. I wonder how the winds and storm surge affected the island, or was it evacuated.:ermm:

stay alerted, the Enemy is not the close vicinity of the Center, it is the now very wide spread dangerous Winds in the aftermath, while the Center is walking near the Northshore her little Babies brought up to Tropical Storm Force Winds to our SE and Eastern Regions all Night long. we had 37,phr Winds measured here last Night on the East, much more than when Irene was passing Us just 60Miles away from the same Locations.
while She will move away from Hispaniola during the next 48hrs Her aftermath will wander all the Island, those Winds and heaviest Rain can reach every Location on the Isle, it is not something solely for the Coastal Areas.
since it started yeasterday the Rain been on here on the East all Night long, at the moment it stopped but there is still a lot of dangerous Wind and Rain around the Island.
watch the Satellite Loops for the Movements of the Rainloads, they are the same Areas which contain the hardest Winds.

that Irene is quiet a piece of Gal, incredible Deveopments while under Interference of Land, I would have enjoyed to watch Her if She wouldn't have been right Here.
during the next 24hrs the Northshores should stay prepared for hard winds up to Tropical Storm Force, it will take 48hrs before it really calms down, don't plan any Travels out of Town before the weekend and do not underestimate the Heavy Waterloads in the Aftermath, they are much more than the Rains while the Storm passes by, and they are A LOT!.

to not get bored on Paradise Island we have of course the next Invest on the Maps, NOAA named it Invest 90L, this morning located SE of the Cape Verde Islands at "The Birthplace", looks very disorganized but is surrounded by very Favorable Conditions, so we may see some Organization there within a few Days. the System is wandering Straight West and got from the beginning the correct Lane on that wide Highway.
the Season started very Early and as mentioned before Peak Time will last til End October at least, we have still 9 weeks to go.
Emily been the first with potential to go Bad, we stayed lucky, Irene did it and will even grow up more, she will battle the US Eastshores for many consecutive Days, but even on that Ugly one we got lucky.
Hispaniola been for a Decade a No Show for the real Storms, I do not count smaller ones such as Jeanne which are inconvenient but far below the ugly Stuff, this early staring and quick uplining Season seems to end the Calm Times, even if Irene is all over and all is dry, watch the News at least once a Day and keep your Homes and Fridges Prepared.
