anyone know how bacardi island made out... have not seen a post in a while, the satellite map looks like the peninsula and Cayo Levantado was right under the western edge. I wonder how the winds and storm surge affected the island, or was it evacuated.:ermm:

Cayo Levantado is not a real island but one of the Keys/Rocks in the Bay.
nobody should be allowed to stay on such unsafe Location when a Storm approaches, I hope the Bahia Principe Hotel there been closed and everybody been brought to safer Places, at least I -personally would name it irresponsible to leave people there.

here on the FloaterYou can follow up where the heavy rain and Wind Portions move around, it is much less now, last Night most of the SSE and Center and E of Hispaniola been covered.
the Colors Red and Violet and dark-Blue show the Dangerous strong Areas.
there is no Radar to watch for most of the Island, so you need to stick to those Sat Loops such as this Floater.
also running fine our Radar for the East(from San Juan Puerto Rico) been not much of help last night, because it covers the Virgin Islands til Bayahibe including Punta Cana, we see whats coming from the Eastern Directions, but what Irene brought came of course all from the Westerly direction, moving in here from the SW, no coverage from there, no forewarning.

~ Just read this....

Police and civil protection officials in the Dominican Republic made their way along the beaches of the country's northern coast to warn people away from the surging sea. Resorts pulled up the umbrellas and lounge chairs as the storm made its way toward the country. At the Wyndham Tangerine, a hotel in the resort area of Sosua and Cabarete, the staff converted a conference room into a temporary storm refuge for 300 people, said deputy general manager Karen Gonzalez.

Jose Manuel Mendez, director of the country's Emergency Operations Center, said that only about 135 people were in public shelters, but that hundreds of others were staying with friends and family to avoid the storm, which was expected to drop as much as 14 inches (35 centimeters) at higher elevations.

The 100 tourists who booked an ocean-view room at a Puerto Plata resort were moved to another building on Monday for their safety, said Medardo Carrera, manager for VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort, and the hotel ordered its 450 guests to stay inside their rooms Monday night.

At the nearby Casa Colonial Beach & Spa, several tourists packed their bags and fled ahead of the storm, hoping to catch one of the last flights for Miami, said concierge Zadaliy Placido.

Ocean World Adventure Park, Marina & Casino made it through the storm with only minor damage. The small tender boat dock in the marina was destroyed by waves, and three bouyes were ripped from their anchor chains. One bouye (red one) has been found, but we are still missing a yellow and a green one.

The park already has over 100 visitors as of 11am !!!

In our area of Cabarete (by Velero) it doesn't look pretty. Courtesy of Irene, Sans Souci beach stairs are practically gone; the beach deck cracked, the front wall giving up. Next door to Sans Souci, the property suffered a lot more damage (in addition to what the beach erosion had already caused): fallen trees, most of the beach front wall gone, cracks everywhere. The small house still standing but with a tree laying over the roof.

Part de Soucis is a more appropriate name today :hurt:

Pictures and video of the damage Irene caused in the DR. OMG tons of garbage, we humans are pigs!!
FEMA: Entire east coast should prepare for Hurricane Irene - CNN.com

according to the actual NOAA Tracking and Intensification Outlooks Irene can become easily a so named 10 Billion Dollar Baby for the US.
there is highest Danger that She will walk along those Eastshores all the Way up to Massachusets.
til now it looks like the Islands passed Irene without Deads nor mayor Insuries.
glad to see that People take warnings serious and stay at Home inside their Houses, a very high percentage of Fatalties in the Past been due Persons who did not respect the Public advises and went out in the Storms to drive around, take Fotos and Viedeos etc. nice to see the new Movement resulting in Safer Actions.

The tail end of the storm (after eye passes) is more often the stronger part of the storm, from my experience.
