we have still strong bands passing by here on the East Coast, even more in Eastern Puerto Rico right Now.
the last short Thunder ad Lightning stopped just 5 minutes ago with some more to come.

Santo Domingo too far from the Storm or protected due Mountains?
no my friend, that's the wrong point of view, the Mountains bother such Hurricane only when they are too close to it's Center, so they loose Powers, but a storm running over water will bring with it's spin the full waterload also to tyhe other side of the highest Mountain Range, and in case of Distance Santo Domingo was not that far away, they just luckily been located in a dead corner of the Storms over all spreading out snd that's very good, as Santo Domingo is the by far most populated Area in the Country and many many Areas are high populated by Citizens not very well prepared, many even living right at the Dangerzones, to get the Capital Spared is good.
for example Punta Cana is located at this Moment much farer from the Storm and also on the other side of the Mountains, but we got quiet hefty on long distance pieces and we still receive Thunderstorms from Irene, even that She is officially long gone.

that above NYC Scenario is nothing fabulous or such, it is easy within the possibilities of Irene's actions, even that such several Days ahead Forecasts have of course a uncertainty of a couple hundred Miles at least on the Tracking.
I don't think SC will get any Hit, a slight nearby touch with the Outer Banks would be IMHO the most Western Route Irene could take.
I think She will use a much more Eastern Lane on that Road and run almost undisturbed up the Eastshores, the Northern Portions of the US East Coast are actually the most possible to await Destin Area. as Our Capital so is that Area there that ****ry's High Populated Area, the most vulnerable Destin, every Mile further away from that Destin is a good Mile, let Her turn NE out to the Graveyard, but such will most likely not happen.
she is struggling a bit still, even showed Her Eye on the Sat shots this afternoon, that's Our aftermath for Her, she was too close to stay unharmed and that will save the US Coast 1 Cat Level in the Final Stage.
since 2 hours the Eye is again fully tapped by new and heavy Thunderstorm Activity, She fights to get her lost powers back. it may take Her an other 24hrs to have that organized, but then she should intensify again, but at least those 24-30hrs of growing uglier are taken away from Her.
No Fishing planned for the next 10 Days, Olly, I just wait for the Skies to turn Sunny again to bring the Boat here out of the Water for Her Yearly Maintenance as usual during low Season. till end September we will run some Blue Marlin Charters again, October is our Month for some Pleasure Rides, to be back for a new working Season in November, that's the same shedule on such Job every Year.

Since I live on a tiny barrier island off the NJ mainland, I hope your wish doesn't come true..... Where our house is the island is only 4 short blocks wide. We've only evacuated once, years ago for Hurricane Gloria. Hoping we don't have to do that again...

AE

Plan on evacuating and don't wait to do it.. 11pm news here in St. Pete Fla weatherguy says that irene is scheduled to make a hit on long island/nyc by Sat.. He also predicts it will be downgraded to a Cat 1 by then.
IF you have items in that house that cannot be replaced, and have the means to do so, take them with you. I would also suggest you take either numerous photos of the house, its current condition and the contents. Video as well. It will help in your filing an insurance claim. Expect, as we did with Katrina to have your insurnace argue with your flood insurance that wind/water caused the damage and it will take ages to get it all fixed.. good luck..
Last Friday I was looking to take a hit here on W Coast Fla..now its someone else. I have to admit I am kind of relieved..

Alter Ego: Please make plans for the worst--that is not my wish for Heaven's Sake!, that is a possible scenario that has been on meteorologist's desks for decades. NYC is just not prepared for major natural disasters such as quakes or hurricanes.

I would really get together all your valuables and get out of Dodge, or get them out of Dodge for the next week. If this storm (and here in Santiago, the winds are still blowing, even more than yesterday, but no rains right now) stays close to the path they are plotting, your barrier island is going to be hit with lots of rains and some heavy winds...Be Prepared. Go to National Hurricane Center and check out the Hurricane Preparedness lists..and watch out for the thing, it is large and uncaring.

Sosua

Very strong winds and periods of heavy rain throughout the night...wind appears to be coming from the south now. Power finally came back on for us about 3 am.

We had no damage where we live except for a couple of small trees uprooted and lots of leaves laying everywhere...will begin cleanup once Irene has cleared us.

Took a drive yesterday around Sosua/Cabarete...lots of large trees down but other than that, we didn't see much damage.

Glad Irene moved north before she presented herself to us.

Hope everyone else made out okay!

Sosua - Cabarete
Sun trying to break through here, gusty winds to about 20kts from south. Not much more rain overnight - only about 0.1 inches.
Total so far for Irene 4.7 inches here.

SD - looks as if you are getting a blast of rain and windy at the moment based on the sat pics.

Power back on here after a night of small outages.

+still dry here, dark clouds passing by, wind is strong gusting from the Southern Sides, but we felt the first Sun this morning.
sitting on the Beach in Cabeza de Toro feels great, you hear the wind blowing but barely feel a thing, as it is coming from our back and does not reach that Beachpart.

Happy cleanup everybody

and the week's for the Lineups are of course by far not over, we just started to be in the Action Phase.

while Cat3 Hurricane Irene moves over the Bahamas we can start to watch Invest90L.
located a few hundred Miles SW of the Cape Verde Islands the formerly unorganized Area of showers shows this morning quiet some good Organization.
the System seems to get organized during the next 2-3 Days, it is on the right Location and it moves straight Westward.
so while cleaning up the Beach and Backyards we should never forget to keep the Fridges Stocked.
and Irene's Influence will stick for an other Day or 2 at least with Us, even long gone towards the NW she still pulls Bands over a wide Area reach as far as the SE'ern Caribbean in front of the Southernmost Antilles.
right now while typing those Lines the Sun is out again, but there are still many dark clouds in Vicinity, too, and many more moving around the SE'ern Area of the Island due Irene's lasting Spin she gave our Atmosphere.

~AE....plan for an evacuation if Irene stays at a Cat 3, storm surge will be high....and depending on when it rides up the coast we have a New Moon on Monday which in and of itself increases the tidal water levels...and I too remember Hurricane Gloria, but she blew herself out rather quickly...thank goodness.

Keep a close eye like everyone else living on the Coast of Jersey...I'm in the same boat as you...no punn intended. Prepare for the worst and be thankful when you don't have to evacuate....

For those on LBI, you better leave while the leaving is possible. With 8,000 locals and 92,000 summer people, the 1 bridge out isn't going to make it. Rare to have this big a storm pre-Labor day when the tourists are present.
