I am fairly sure you are ..from all the various maps that are now on the internet,it looks as if the eye will miss to the north of DR but the width of Maria is being portrayed as much wider than Irma and so maybe Higuey will still cop much rain and wind

Rubio did right with the Bearing.
when Maria approached Dominica, doing a bit zick zack, it was on a position and under a 295 Degrees Heading which would have brougt the Storm on the Map on a straight line over the middle of the Eastcoast.
but somewhere between9:30 and 10PM last evening theyeye jumped to the NW when it left Dominica.
since then the Tracking runs further north of us.

Why cannot every year be like 2015?

Hey Buddy,
that's for boring ole farts.
the caribbean needs it's action, it's dance.
hahaha.
honestly, it would be davastating bad for us to not have any tropical storms/disturbances/Waves anymore.
those Tropical Waves and the Trade Winds/Easterlies which push those Waves, area essential part of Mother Nature's Plans to keep the balance about water on the Globe. without the numeroud Waves we would be a impossible to live in Dry piece of Hot sun, without any vegetation.
as destructive at the Cyclones are when they hit Land, the Tropical Waves are a Vital part of our Island Lifes, we couldn't be without them. they are the Transporters of Water/Moisture, big part of the Global Balance.
like yesterday somebody asked if we couldn't just Nuke such Hurricanes when they are far out there.
yes, you can nuke them and i bet some countries would love to drop some bombs in storms, but the effect could be to deroute a storm from your Soil and send it to a prior safe Neighbour instead. such would never workout.
and more Important: to Nuke the Waves coming over the Atlantic pushed by the Trade Winds, would mean to kill us all, to take our waters away.

we Humas should not mess up with Mom Nature's long running Plans, we are by far not smart enough to understand the whole big picture and we only mess things up, as we proof year by year on many things.

we are here on the Planet only since a short time, a evolutionary small side effect(please no senseless comments about holy Babies, Snakes, Apples and da otha Maria) and we will not last long compared to the millions of years a planet circles around the Sun, so any changes done by Humanity on this planet would be onyt a extreme short term effect.
the Big Bang/Apocalypse will happen, that's for sure, but it will happen many millions of years after Humans are long forgotten about as part of this Planet.

You do know that 2015 was the year where one of the worst droughts this region has ever seen took place.

Forest fires were rampant that year, and some of our biggest most important rivers went nearly dry.

After escaping most of the wrath of Irma, after all the hype, I hope residents in DR don't take Maria less than serious.

Thanks AE. I think that you are correct. Irma was unusual and did not downgrade with the mountain effects that normally happen and downgrade storms by 1 or 2 cats for the north coast. We got lucky.

We can hope that Maria will downgrade but we just don't know and even if she does, still could be a Cat. 3 or more.

I have done all the lite work but now have to decide on the more difficult heavy preps. Solar panels coming down... again. Might have time to shutter a couple of more vulnerable windows.

I am always serious (unless I make jokes about a very narrow topic).

MARIA looks like it will go a bit north of us. That is a seriously good thing for the DR. There will be wind and rain.

We'll know much more later today - early tomorrow

Same old, same old --- get ready and watch.

Problem is ??? If I wait until tomorrow we will not have enough time to get the panels down. So waiting and watching and hoping time has come to an end.

It's get it done time for me.

I hymned and hawed a bit yesterday about what I really needed to do to get ready. I have the time, I'd rather be over prepared than be surprised by a situation I misread. So hi ho hi ho it's prep I should do.

because we did not have the usual numbers of tropical waves to carry the moisture around the globe to be spread out, thats exactly the results to await if some smart Minds would ever find a way/develop a "bomb" to destroy Hurrcanes or influence those natural patterns.

After escaping most of the wrath of Irma, after all the hype, I hope residents in DR don't take Maria less than serious.

thats exactly the danger, specially for the least effected areas like for example here in Punta cana.
people start to just smile when the news reports about anything related to a upcoming/awaited Storm.
Irma was a very close thing, imagine Irma just 10-15 miles south of the line it went by, there would not be Internet or phone service or electricity along the whole northshores for a long while, the folks there would not know that Maria exists and comes a similar path.
it is fantastic to get lucky the very most times,
it is stupid to not be ready for each single time.

One of the few country westerns that I like. So to lighten up a little I offer this. Perhaps if we sing it enough; Maria will lighten up too. ;)

Won't Maria arrive on the same day Hurricane Georges arrived in 1998 - September 21? And wasn't Georges supposed to go north and the track changed as it crossed Puerto Rico and it decimated the east and south coast of the DR instead?
