Stay home? I am home. And if you mean, go back to my country, if I do, why would I want to send a check once a month?

I'm surprised though it took until page 4 for someone to reply why I live here then.

My point is your money is always welcome here.
People like yourself who say the hate the Dominican Republic are not wanted around here.
So perhaps it would be better for all of us if people like yourself (your like minded friends included)
would just send your money down here every month and post your negative comments about the
Dominican Republic from your country of birth/ comparison?

Why did you move down here? Let me guess.. Landed the girl of your dreams down here
that you could never afford back home?

Indeed sir, you are more than welcome around here so long as you?re spending money.

New anti-laundering laws came into effect a few years back. Now you can't even buy $400 USD with cash without producing ID. I thought it would be an easy thing initiate an online transfer or to setup an automatic monthly transfer but thus far I have been unsuccessful.

I regularly transfer online from my RBC account in Canada to my BHD account in Jarabacoa. I can only transfer $2500 US per day, and the money doesn't show up in my account for two days usually. I've been doing this for 3-4 years.

Remember, Cdn clients of RBC can have both Cdn and US based accounts.

RBC owns a US bank, so instead of having Cdn and US accounts domociled in Canada, you can have your Cdn bank and a US bank.
Much better for international banking.

Right. All canadian banks offer usd accounts.

Only in person at a Cdn bank. You will have to find a transfer agent within Canada. Transfer from the bank to the agent, then from the agent to your bank in DR.

Easier and cheaper to plan ahead and write a cheque.

Good luck.

Just bring cash. It is much easier. (Yes, I know we just had that conversation the other day.) And you do not have to wait for it to clear the bank, etc. They just smell it to make sure it is clean : )

Amen. Doing my best. Unfortunately, some of my money is going to a rich Italian to make him richer.

This is the kind of detail you can only find on dr1. makes sense when you think about it. Like doing your grocery shopping in the south of USA on a sunday morniing. stores are empty.

My "Middle Name","Robert" is listed on most of my Dominican documents as my "Last Name".
That's "OK" since they can pronounce THAT!
Makes me harder to find as well!

Here's a valuable tip to avoid waiting in "Lines" here in the DR.
Go when it is raining like hell!
And, NEVER go to the bank on the 15th,25th.,30/31st, or a Friday!
I go midweek, 3 pm, and hope it RAINS!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
I have been waiting for Banco Reservas to send my bank statements by email for over 15 years!!!!!
For a few years I reapplied every 6 months or so, they would ALWAYS promise it would then start coming, NEVER HAS!
They DO seem to be able to send their emails about bank promotions/events, with "No Problemo"!

Which is why I'm on a first name basis with the managers and supervisors (and heck, everyone else) at my BPD branch.

I don't wait in lines to do things, I go to the manager, and she gets it done.

THAT'S how you do it. For what it's worth, I've been classified as a VIP.

Me too, show them the card and to the front of the line. I don't feel comfortable doing it, but if the line is long and we are in a hurry we use it.

All you have to do is get it through the airport. Just bring it in something the people at the airport will have no interest in. Like a golf bag. (Your bank in Canada might look at you funny when you take out the cash though.) Of course, you will declare on the DR customs form that you have more than $10,000 cash with you, but that won't be a problem because they never look at that piece of paper either.

The customer is paying through the nose for a service to which he/she is entitled.
This does not require me to be deferential to some hopelessly inept cashier who has the job because Daddy has influence.
I am always polite but they are often not.......

but don't you know that you are always at fault? if you get killed it's because you mixed with the wrong crowd, took drugs, had too much cash on you, tried to defend yourself. you had it coming. if you are frustrated with the service it's because you do not speak spanish, you are rude, you don't know the culture and you are wearing flipflops. guilty.

Knowing this country, I balance my accounts on a daily basis against a EXCEL spreadsheet I use for my checkbook. First thing I do after I make coffee. In my opinion, it's an absolute must.

Glad to hear that I am not the only person in the world who uses an Excel spreadsheet as a checkbook! Works wonderfully well.

In what way would it better for you if I place my negative comments from my birth country instead of from right here? If I choose to live and stay in a country that by times drives me up the wall, that's my decision. I'm free to go and free to stay (and I'm legal so unfortunately for you won't be deported.

You have, how long, 6 weeks posting on this forum? Perhaps in a few months you'll learn that many foreigners that post here have a love-hate relationship with this country.

When the time comes that I decide it's enough and I go back to my country, there won't be anyone left here for me to send a check to. I'd be bringing my family.

With all due respect to my friend Mauricio I have not had a similar problem at Dominican financial institutions. I have had them reject a check because I changed the date but no big deal. I also got a home loan for my house with little paperwork other than my tax statements and went three years without paying the mortgage. Then again the bank was started by a Catholic priest (Cooperative San Jose) so one should not be surprised.

Yes 6 weeks posting on this forum sounds about right. However I have lived on the island for several years. Its great that
your legal. Rest assured, you being deported or choosing to remain in this country for a life is in no way unfortunate for me.

Now that we have all had the pleasure of listening to your whining little rant about customer service in the DR, I hope the next time you visit the bank no does or says anything to upset you, hurt your feelings or make you feel like you have to deal with the same things every other person on the island has to deal while living here.

You are a special person indeed and therefor
you deserve to be treated as such. Should the "time ever come" for you to leave this country I am confident that you and yourlove-hate relationship for the Dominican Republic will be dearly missed.

Silly me, who was I to imply there's no need to have such a negative attitude about living in such a beautiful place.
