Shucks.....thought you said they were starting by the old Punta Garza!!
Looks like they're just done in front of the new Costa del Sol and Hemmingway.
That's almost 2 kms. from the Juan Dolio public beach (where I live!).
Nice pic's tho!
Thanks.....

Oouups ...sorry ... but they decided lately to start from left to right ...from Albatros in Villas Del Mar beach , after Juan Dolio beach and then what is left from sand to Guayacanes beach. They are removing the rocks , wood , kioskos etc. After they will pump a lot of white sand . I spoke to cuban guy who is one in charge , they are planing to remove in some places the coral reefs and to move them far away from the beach (!!??), the sand ( 30 meters wide ) would kill corals . On the beach of Guavaberry Beach Club they took out all kioskos ( similar to Aura Restaurante ... nice but not realy legal ones http://www.dr1.com/forums/south-coast/36626-aura-beach-house-juan-dolio-very-nice.html Remember the beach is never private within 60 meters .)

How can a coral reef be moved?

And as long as there is a curfew in the country the "quality of the tourist product" will stay exactly zero, no matter if there are 30m more or less beach.

Update

Shucks.....thought you said they were starting by the old Punta Garza.....

Good news for you MommC : They are cleaning Punta Garza area , after they finish in Villas Del Mar to move the rocks , they start to pump the white sand , during next month starting from Villas Del Mar and going all the way to Punta Garza . The boat they are going to use is in Cabarete right now. When they finish there Juan Dolio is next ...after next is Boca Chica.

Beach works still on

Beach reconstruction is still on . They are removing all the stones now. Most part in Villas Del Mar is ready to put the sand. The white sand is coming from La Romana area...

all buildings have to be cleared within 60 m of the waterline

I understand that all buildings have to be cleared within 60 ft of the waterline. So there are problems for Capella,(The dive school and restaurant have to go) Guavaberry beach club, Aura etc etc, as some Cuban guy heading the beach project has been told to knock parts of them down. Anyone know if this is true?

The Capella's dive school is already gone DSC02313 pictures from caribbean photos on webshots Guavaberry beach club is clean already DSC02090 pictures from caribbean photos on webshots

...great new sand, ..just a few munites from the country's capital and main city, another main city just ~10 minutes to the East, lots of new community type construction ..Juan Dolio is starting to look better than Bavaro.

Juan Dolio and Villas del Mar beaches are better that they used to be. Now it looks like a beach worthy of one of the largest resort areas in the entire Caribbean.

But better than Bavaro? Well.... I guess it depends.

Bavaro beach is certainly more beautiful than Juan Dolio, although I have not been to JD since the beach was re-done. Perhaps in person its just as impressive.

The beach IS beautiful ( if a little smelly until all the sea life decomposes) and the secretary of tourismo has just announced the 'torres' up to 20 floors high will be allowed to be built on the non-beach side of the street.
Looks like South Beach a la Republicca Dominicana is well under way!!
