As you correctly pointed out in a prior post, the Miss Universe franchise is a big business with the only end goal of generating income and hopefully a profit. That aside there clearly two main camps of local Dominicans voicing their opinions on the issue. Shutting down or dismissing opinions is dangerous. Im certain the show will go on regardless.
You know what they say...everyone has an opinion.

Probably the nicest looking Miss RD of all time.
I don't think she is even the nicest looking of the other contestants by quite a bit and almost certainly won't be doing this like back in 2003:

Seems things are not a rosy as they seem:

Time for the antiquated pompous tradition of beauty pageants to come to an end. Nothing good comes out of winning, except the winners think they won't have to work a real job ever. The organization's management is prob lining their pockets. This is no longer a lucrative business. We shouldn't be rewarding women for superficial beauty anyway. These aren't the brightest bunch either, they never were.

For the "trajes tipicos" competition, this young lady came dressed as a plantain tree? I've never seen someone dressed as a plaintain tree. Not to mention, plantains grow all over the world, like coconuts. Did Miss Canada come dressed as a moose? I rate this one 4 rotten tomatoes.

I have to agree. Mr AE shook his head in disgust. Of all the things DR has….. a platano, the word used by some to ridicule Dominicans??

Plus, Ms Downing dress was designed by Leonel Lirio, a Dominican designer based in Santo Domingo. All she had to decide was to wear that dress, but those that thought of it, designed it, and made it are all Dominicans.

If it was something of a Puerto Rican or a Cuban or any other group designing and making the dress for a Dominican to wear in a pageant, I can see the insult. Otherwise it is nothing more than overreacting.

I see. Kind of like “I can ridicule my child, but don’t you dare “.

I hope she does well, I saw this morning she’s projected to be in top 5.
