I have read all 8 pages of comments. The OP has received some good advice from the regular posters. She is showing a
good deal of resistance to the buen consejos. The only thing is to see how she is progressing in her chosen endevour.

I personally am very curious to know how it progresses, seen the OP desire to go forward with it.

Isis, will you be so good as to let us sceptics know how is going? Which town or city will you be moving in?
Please keep in touch, it could be beneficial to you too.

I will be in Santo Domingo. I don't doubt for a second that there is some solid advice here, my only issue is with what ELSE I see. A lot of jaded people who rather than offer fair and unbiased advice, lump and entire race/culture of people together as though everyone were exactly the same. That, I am definitely resistant to. I'm a Black woman, I know all about being lumped in with a bunch of folks who don't represent you. But if you notice my responses, I have been I have been receptive to those who present their information in a tactful, honest way. I;m not wearing rose colored glasses about this, I knew the situation going in to it. I came here for advice on Visas and ended up with a bunch of psuedo-sociological advice. I welcome anyone who wants to share their experience with me, but please recognize the differences between the two.

aligning interests? what the heck is that? some New Wave stuff?

listen here, OP, i am not a curmudgeon. i only play one on tv (damn, that's cornball). anyway, i have been in this country for 25 years, and i have been there , and done that. i have had Dominican girls live with me in NY, and live with me here. i have never met one that was different from the other. NEVER. know why? i never met one that was in the social class of a woman such as Mauricio's wife. all were of modest means. the two in NYC were just your average chica i was extending a helping hand to. the playbook was the same. the stories were the same. the lies were the same. it was like a Xerox machine spit them out.

see my point?

Ok, well my xerox experience has been with men in general! Every unsuccessful relationship I ever had as been with an American man, so should I go on the American forums and start telling everyone who wants to come to America that the men are all cheaters and liars? That sounds foolish because it is. I appreciate the warnings and advice, but at the same time don't rain on my parade just because you had some bad weather.

A question I always bring up. What about those lucky catches in your hometown? None to catch? Need to go "outside the box" to capture? lol No offense to you though. Just curious.

I'm from Los Angeles, Hollywood to be exact. So you can imagine what dating is like here. Use your imagination, it will probably give you an accurate depiction. LOL I wouldn't say I needed to go outside the states though, but outside of LA, definitely. Dating here is almost non-existent. There's sex and occasionally marriage, but no dating. Not in my community anyway....

That's kind of a generalization. I'm an AA guy, and enjoy "dating" very much. So do most of the guys I know.

Yes, there are plenty of selfish, opportunistic, materialistic jerks out there - in both genders. But there are some pretty decent folk, also.

That said, I genuinely hope things work out in your new relationship. Everyone deserves to be happy. Just realize that the word Utopia literally translates as "no place," and to use the same degree of care as you would in a "regular" relationship back home.

Btw, welcome to DR1!

My point was there's a concentration of materialistic jerks (both genders, all races) in Hollywood. The facade extends far beyond the movie set.... Thanks for the welcome!

The more posts I read by Ms. Isis, the more I think she's very well equipped to handle anything DR throws at her.

Keep in touch with us after your move, I want to hear you tell us all about your successes.

The shallowness of the region, (LA) is unfathomable to people who have never lived there as a single male or female. I must strongly concur with the OP.

Hahaha thanks! I am learning more, day by day. But being there, I knew that was the place I was supposed to be. Not exactly sure why, but something just fit. From the moment I got off the plane, I could feel it. And in regards to my business, everything I touched turned to gold... I am willing to work hard to learn the language and culture, and to endure the ramblings of a thousand jaded expats & DR-vets if it means that my dreams will come true!! :)

Did she actually visit DR and met personally with the man?, not clear to me...

for getting advise to get visa o permanent residence in any country, it help to clarify what the person will be doing in the target country...

what the fiance or local supporting party is doing for a living is also important, at least immigration in the USA want to know

btw i like your name, for a very specific reason,

Was the mitological [sp?] egyptian Osiris and Isis considered black?

what do you mean "modern day"?

is your man named Osiris, and his son Horus?, LOL

In DR a woman can not legally marry her brother, LOL

anyway while you in DR see if you can improve the Ozama [Nile] river situation...

Yes I met my BF while visiting DR on business. I was having some meetings there regarding a business I'm about to start. As for the name, there's a line in a song that says "she was the modern Isis" and I always liked it so I thought it would make a cool name. Plus I'm very interested in all things ancient Egyptian. As for the heritage, not sure I can determine the heritage of two mythological people. But yes, I like to think they were black. Egypt is in Africa after all.... Not aware of the situation with the Ozama river. What's it like?

Rio Ozama splits Santo Domingo in its Western and Eastern part. It also function as a sewer/wastebin, so let's just say it's not healthy to swim there, or take a drink - probably not even to get your feet wet. Besides that, the worst misery is concentrated to the river area, which you can see from the bridges (a lot better than the close up, I'd say, even though it was +10 years since I was in "Gualey" or "Guachu-City" - doubt that it has gotten much better since).

To the OP:

You have a 50% chance your husband will be the love of your life, and you have a 50% chance the marriage will go south. You know what everybody on the planet has these same odds( unless you are marrying a man from Iran, but that is a different story)

My point is if you love your future husband then marry him END OF STORY!!! Don't let some of these lonely posters cast a dark cloud over your happiness.

Telling a person that I have never met NOT to marry a man I never met is almost crazy, but if you stick around long enough on DR1 and see some other threads this many seem normal LOL

BTW The only advice I will give you is ALWAYS represent where you come from. Where a L.A. Lakers or Clippers T shirt every now and then, Dodgers baseball cap when you are having a bad hair day LOL. Even though Licey has the same colors has the Dodgers DO NOT ever were a Licey cap or any other winter league team. Make sure you keep a small piece of home with you and all time because there are going to be days when you question you move to DR.

A big mistake so many people make is trying to "FIT IN" just be yourself a African American woman from Los Angeles that fell in love with a man from Dominican Republic and decided to marry him. If you do not dress like a typical Dominican woman do not start, dress as if you were walking down Melrose Ave or hanging out in West Hollywood. Fitting in is a state of mind and people use the term so they can fell good about themselves and be a part of the crowd. You on the other hand think outside the box and African American woman living and working in Dominican Republic is super rare.

Almost most forgot the L.A. area is like "utopia" for dating for a guy like me, but looking at it from a AA woman point of view is can be very tiresome. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Just like the odds to win the jackpot in the lottery are 50%, you either win it or you don't......right?

Isis was Osiris's [a famous egyptian God] sister and wife

he was credited with the good productivity of the land around Nile river, hungry people went to Egypt to survive, like the jews who ended up as slaves there for centuries

I guess the land around Ozama and Rio Haina 'were' also very productive when the DR god [ you know who...] was alive, but looks like dr is still considered a desired spot, there is gold, sleek and fun men and women...
