New Twist in Dominican Used Car Market

well, you checked the right boxes, and that is why you ended up with a great Sonata...

the Sonatas and the later LPI variants are way better in Santiago than they are in the capital. it seems like the selected stuff goes to Santiago, and the garbage stays in Sto Dgo. whatever you do, never be tempted to buy from a dealer called Fiauto...don't ask why...just take my word.

Why does Santiago get the better Korean cars ?

firstly, i think that the big importer in Santiago is a Dominican guy, who selects a better level of car when he buys. the big guys in the capital seem to be some shady Korean guys who bring in dregs, and try to put lipstick on pigs. the stuff in Sto Dgo is horrid. i have inspected over 25 N20s in the capital, and every one was abominable. i have yet to see a bad Sonata in Santiago for sale..

And is there a significance to color. I assume you are talking about imports being sold for the first time, as far as not seeing a bad one ?
Aren't N20s outside the 5-year window for import now ?

i am not saying there are no bad ones in Santiago. i have gotten 4 N20s and 3 K5s, in Santiago. all cream puffs. i spent 2 days in Sto Dgo a few months ago, and 2 days last month. i could not find a decent N20 anywhere.

there is a significance to color...the cabs were all mamey, that odious orange color. they come here, and guys paint them over. the ones which were not cabs come in white and silver, at least up to 2010. if a guy tries to sell you a black 2010, it was a mamey cab.

I like the size, looks and ground clearance of the N20. If I was looking for a 4 door gas powered sedan that's the one I would buy

Good morning GG. I never ceases to amaze me how the DR government can make expat car import rules so restrictive and let death traps navigate the DR road without hindrance. I rarely see antique cars on the DR roads. In 14 years I’ve come across a 77 Corvette in decent condition, a ratty MGB and two old LandRovers on the North coast. How restrictive are the antique vehicle import reps for expats and have you ever seen antique cars for sale in the DR?

good morning...actually, i have seen quite a few antiques, but not on the roads. quite often, i see old relics in driveways and the parking lots of business places. i have seen a few Minis, and last week i saw an Escort from around 1970. as far as LandRovers...there is a pretty decent one in Imbert, in that plaza on the right side of the road if tou are heading from POP to Santiago..

It might be the big moto importer from Gasping Hernandez...

He has tons of those sour oranges there.....usually

They are restrictions for importing older vehicles. They need to be at least 30 years old, in very good condition, be approved by the president of the local classic car club and you have to pay a flat tax rate that I think is still USD$3000.

I subscribe to Barn Finds and Bring a Trailer and I have been tempted more than once, but that 3K tax always makes me think twice, plus I have 3 vehicles already.

There are quite a few classic cars here in very good condition and there are clubs that have their own facebook page.

They do caravan trips monthly to different towns to show off their cars.

The owner of CCN has around 10 cars parked in the underground parking lot at Jumbo Luperon.

The owner of Ferreteria Americana has a few parked in the underground garage as well.

Hyundai came a long way before 10 years ago. when 66% of prior owners give a car 5 stars out of 5, and only 6% give it 1 star, that says everything you need to know. that is how prior, or present, owners of the 2007 Hyundai Tucson feel about it. the perfect car for the Dominican Republic.

There's a Vera Cruz sitting at the dealer next door to my house. I haven't stopped to look at it because I'm afraid I'd buy it.

That is a nice truck.

Thanks for the information JDJ. I’ll do some checking around when I’m in the area next week. I’ve restored MGB’s and TR-6’s over the years. Easy to work on and not costly to repair. I can think of nothing nicer than driving some of the winding DR roads in a two seater convertible. Closest I can come to driving a motorcycle there. Something I would never do.

Lovely cars but you'll be fighting a constant battle against rust here.

That depends on where you live. Here in Jarabacoa or in Santiago we are far enough from the ocean that rust is not a problem.
