Over $4,000,000,000.00 remitted into the DR economy for the first 6 months of this year. That's US dollars coming into the country which is 39% HIGHER than last year. Yes you read that right- FOUR BILLION US DOLLARS. All sources tracked like banks, Western Union, all of it.

$892,000,000 in July alone including $50,000,000 declared in passenger pocket money coming through the airports which has been severely diminished with 4 months of airport closures.

If you think for one second that it's in the DR'S interest to curtail the flow of US dollars into the DR especially with the value of the peso approaching 60 pesos per dollar think again.

Abinader is a pure tourismo guy as he should be. If you think the article is about cracking down on over stayers here re-read the above.

As SKY always posts- no overstayer has EVER been denied entry to the DR or sanctioned in any way because of previous overstays.

It's a bit of a stretch to say all illegal immigrants offer nothing to society

The agricultural sector of the USA relies on that type of labor... as do others
Meat Packing/Slaughterhouses for one
I'm on the fence, when speaking about the DR. Granted Hatians work the cane fields, clean cunucos, and perform construction jobs for 500 pesos per day in many cases. That said, Ive known many Dominicans who resent them for taking these jobs because they prostrate themselves at undercut rates (house painting is a big example that I directly know of) They flood the free clinics, hospitals and are more likely to commit crimes per cápita.

I think that if they were contributing to Dominican economy so much I doubt the Dominican rain makers would be burning so many resources to extract them.

and it is solely the GusFring opinion(and of course there are others, also entitled to their opinion), that nothing of the 162 posts is related to the OP.
I am one who see's it direct connected and related.
different people with different interpretations of the same article and different opinions on one theme.
well, I say this Life is beautiful with all it's diversity
Of course the discussion about enforcing the law is about everyone and not just people from one country.
The people from that one country people think it is only about are already regularly deported..

Remittances are primarily from Dominicans who work in the US. What does enforcing immigration law have to do with that?
Remittances have been the number 2 source of income for the DR for quite some time and it is certainly very important.

As for what happens to illegal aliens, time will tell. People who overstay a tourist card are no longer tourists.

Of course the discussion about enforcing the law is about everyone and not just people from one country.
The people from that one country people think it is only about are already regularly deported..
but when cutting all the stuff down to the simple to see basics,
back in the day the Immigrations Law was modified into todays still valid writing,
SOLELY to reduce the, by that time, over the needed maximum inflowing Haitian Masses of indocumented Haitians, nothing else.
Haitian workers are really needed here, but only on certain levels/in a certain number.
so many already got their DR papers, also for their children and grandchildren throug the naturalization process, which been part of the "Package" when the decision to modify the Immigrations Law been taken.
so during the last years, to look fine for the intl press, the long term overstayers got their papers done, including the long term/since generations in the country residing Haitians, for whom the whole Package anyways been created in the first place.
sure it is a nice and easy tool to get rid of any other nationalities, but only used once such individual would come into conflict with DR law for some different thing. to then play the Illegal Immigrant card on such guy/gal is teh the easiest and least costy way to get rid of the unwated individuum.
but in General,
it was from the beginning a tool to control the haitian influx in DR,
and i can not imagine that it will be used for much more for many years to come.
this new government will have for a much longer time than just one governing cycle/4 years a heck of a load of more important things to get under control,
after this Pandemic nuked the economy and everything else all around.

one point, that could be seen as a problematic point for undocumented overstayers, is the medical assistance/coverage.
til now everybody can visit a butcher/public hospital.
Now, Luis announced that til year's end EVERY Dominican Citizen will have a medical Coverage paid for by the government.
IMHO a great move, loooong overdue.
it hide's the dark spot, that you show up at any public clinic with your DR citizen cedula at hand and get treatment,
but without such DR-Citizen-Cedula they may send you to the next of the many private clinics, where Residents and visiting foreigners get the anyways way better treatment by simply presenting their private medical insurance card.
a undocumented Immigrant would not fit in either place, there could be a singificantly sizeddark area growing.
the DR is not respnsible for any treatment of any illegal allien.

but nobody has any interest in banging on real Tourists, who overstay their tourist card for some days or weeks or even a fewmonths.
they are for the vast mayority a very welcome clientel which spends on housing, food, drinks and keeps also some female street businesses alive.
those do no harm to anybody and do not cost a single cent to the DR society, so no need to spend big resources on stopping those from spending good money in DR.
what easily can be done, without touching any overstay fee procedures, is to set a Limit:
overstaying is fine and zipped by the fee paid on Exit, the traveler is very welcome to come back soon foran other round of spending money all around.
and who stay's over, let's say, a 6 Months max Limit, pays a overstay fine well higher and will in addition be on the list as a persona non grada, blocked to come back for a certainnumber of years.
such kinda solution would even make it unneccessary to produce/invent some new visa for snowbirds and alikes.
who plans from the beginning to stay longer than 6 months, that's then the visiting clientel which has to go the way of residency or plan on leaving every 6 months to come back again for the next 6 months run around the 'hood.

From this web site:

"TOURIST VISA REQUIRED:
Not required for visits shorter than 30 days"

After 30 days , you are an illegal alien.
you are correct solely reading the law.
you are completely out of Reality when it comes to handling of the law.
every country implies laws to be able to legally handle things in favor of that specific country's ways/aims/goals etc.
BUT,
every country also handles it's own existing laws in flexibel ways when it comes to favorable exceptions.
hence there are always in addition to laws some kinda degrees, add articles etc etc, which allow certains exceptions of such law.
in the DR, when it comes ot the Immigrations Law, such exceptional Handling of the Law is, that tourist overstaying their 30 days tourist card allowance,
are NOT kicked out of the country and do NOT get returning to the DR denied, even that the law would allow the DR to do so, but the DR has no intention to keep that clientel out of DR.
so the basic straight forward easy to read law is one thing,
the way a country handles/applies its law in it's own favor, is something very DIFFERENT.

As long as all the above falls within DR laws and eliminates any grey areas legally, who could have any issue with that? The problem at the moment is there is no such set of laws that allow this.

Which goes back to the original post . The PLD ignored the law for 16 years and did what they wanted regarding immigration law. The original post of this thread says the new minister of the MIP will enforce the laws as written because no new laws are needed. Which is the entire point of this thread!

again,
the DR Gve(PLD in this particula 16 years run) did NOT Ignore the Law,
they HANDLED it with little addies in the DR's Favour.
that "addy"is the implementation of the overstay fees.
those are Not written in any law nor added to the Law,
BUT those fees are officially published by the DR government to be in place.
the Government can do that exactly that way, unless someone would maybe drag the government to court, accusing the government to act Unlawful.
the point where i agree with you is:
yes, starting with day 31 a visitor ha sa Illegal Immigrations Status which come's with certain disadvantages, like for example Insurers of any kind sure have fineprints stating, that they do not have to cover/pay for anything when a person lives in illegality.
but the government decided clearly to not presecute overtsyaing visitors, by implementing the overstay fees table.

Right - new sheriff in town....

We shall see what we shall see.....
You can bet it won't be 'Nuttin''
right, starting Sunday we have a new Sheriff running southern Doge City.
sure, as the law is already in place and approved since 16 years,
they could take away the overstay fees table right away.
the same day they could start to hunt overtsyaers of all nationalities country wide, chase them down the streets by use of firearms, load them without social distancing and without masks on a buas or truck and carry them away to Immigrants Camp to start their deporting prcess.
BUT,
which polititian with a sane mind would start such uproar, shocking the whole world for zero advantage of anything, specially in times when the DR is trying their best to show for other countries as a SAFE and WORTH to VISIT Location aside all the many caribbean competitors?
there is zero benefit tohave for the DR, starting any such action against visiting foreigners.

hence in my own personal opinion, nothing of such will happen the next years to come.
some changes on limits to overstay, Yes, I can imagine to see a dead line, like above mentioned 6 months maximum of overstaying or reentry denied for some years.
i am pretty sure that such/some kind of a small change will come to bring snowbirds on the safe side of travel, to not be Ïllegal" in case of a accident or what so ever occurances.
but i do not see any Alien Hunt Season to start up.

Yes - changes will hopefully be good ones
Abinader is a fan of the tourism sector

6 month visa perhaps....
Stiffer overstay fees to discourage the practice.... or warnings when leaving, don't do that again

I think preselling the overstay is a good idea

What they DO NOT want is people flying in and staying indefinitely.... true overstayers... interlopers

Why did the new minister say the government did not enforce the laws under the PLD and nothing new was needed but to enforce them? Not enforcing the law as written is certainly ignoring those laws.

Which is the entire point of this thread.
