Just a bit more information for you. The Lincoln School is owned by the sugar company in La Romana but students do not have to be children of their employees. The school follows a combination of Dominican and British curriculum and the Headmaster's first name is Harry, not Henry. Most of the expat teachers are from the UK. They do have an extra curricular high school sports program that travels to the capital to play games (primarily at the CMS tournaments) Hope this helps.

Hi Carina: You seem quite knowledgeable about the school system in the DR. I am looking to either volunteer or work with special needs children in the Punta Cana area. I am a social worker by education but have worked in the Rehabilitation field with special needs children and adults for approx 14 years.
Would you know if the schools are inclusive of special needs children or are there seperate programs for special needs children? I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanx

There is a new school in Cabrera called the Academia Internacional de Cabrera. Currently we offer instruction from maternal (3 years) to quinto (10 years). Instruction is offered in English, Spanish, and French. Our curriculum is combined Dominican and American.

Santiago Christian School - Reverence ~ Knowledge

website:glasses:

From "About SCS"

Our Mission

Santiago Christian School seeks to provide a Christ-centered education in which children develop their God-given abilities to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for a life of excellence in God's Kingdom.

School Profile

Santiago Christian School, located in Santiago, Dominican Republic, is a Christian, non-profit, private, coeducational, American international school, which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year contains 2 semesters, which begin in mid-August and finish in early June. The academic year consists of 181 teaching days.

Organization: A 4-member Board of Trustees governs the school.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of a U.S. college-preparatory private school. Instruction is in English. Over 85 percent of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Dominican Republic. The school offers services for students with mild learning disabilities, an English-as-a-Second-Language program at the elementary level, and enrichment for academically talented students including the Advanced Placement Program. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredit the School.

Faculty and Staff: For the 2005-2006 school year our staff is composed of members, divided as follows: administration, office staff, faculty, student services and maintenance & support staff.

Our director and principals all come from the US and received their training in colleges and universities there.

The SCS office and maintenance staff are Dominicans. The school has employed most of them for several years. They provide a valuable and necessary support to the smooth functioning at SCS.

The majority of our faculty and student services personnel come from a variety of Canadian provinces and US states. The Spanish and Dominican Social Studies teachers are all Dominicans. Each makes a significant contribution in the education and spiritual life of the students.
Enrollment: Our student enrollment varies each year. Although generally it is approximately 500, it has been as high as 565 and as low as 440. The majority of students are Dominican. We also have some students from Europe, US, Canada and occasionally other countries are represented in our student body.

Facilities: The School has a 15 classroom elementary complex, a 15 classroom secondary school complex, 1 library, an administrative complex, a multipurpose building, one covered court, 2 art rooms, 1 music room, 1 theater, 3 science laboratories (Physics, Chemistry & Biology) and the nurse?s office. The School is located on an 8.30-acres campus located on the North side of the city.

Another school in santo domingo not mentioned

I have been reading through the thread and have found that there are schools that havent been mentioned. The MCSchool for one is also an excellent school. Most people are familiar with Mi Colegio, which is the spanish version of the school, but right next door is MC school, where classes are conducted entirely in English. It is owned by the same people who just opened up Heritage School in Cap Cana. Its located in el million and is accredited by the states.
Here is the web address: MCSCHOOL

I actually am a teacher there, and have also worked in other schools. From my experience in tutoring students from various schools, and seeing what their capabilities are and the curriculums they are being taught, I reccommend, the MCSchool, ABC School, St. George, New Horizons and Dominico Americano, based on my experience. I have also heard that the Cathedra school is good, and knew someone who taught at Instituto Escuela. She said it was decent, but no air conditioned classrooms like you will find in most bicultural schools.

I also saw some posts talking asking about salaries. The pay at many schools is decent, usually starting at 25,000 and going up to 30 plus depending on your degrees and experience. As someone mentioned. Some schools will even pay for housing and travel expenses if they hire from abroad. Hope this helps!

A friend of mine runs a home schooling group in Cofresi (just outside Puerto Plata), where they teach students mostly in Spanish/English/and German. Send me a PM and I will give you name and phone number.

The server was down a while ago, so maybe that was the problem....Here are the phone numbers of the school:Central (809) 548-6620
(809) 548-6659
(809) 548-6661

I asked about price, but it varies according to the age of the students, if he/she is going into preschool, primary/middle/etc. So try and call, as I'm sure you'll get more infor. that way.

anyone else

My son is in grade 9 in canada. I was looking at the Heritage Scool at Cap Cana, since that would be near to where we plan to settle in Punta Cana.
The school looks great. Does anyone here have older children that attend that school or have attended there? I would just like to hear some input, besides looking at the website. I would like to visit the school in a few weeks when we come down.
Any input is appreciated, thanks.:)

The Abraham Lincoln school is located in La Romana and is a nice little school. It is modeled after a combination of British/Dominican educational philosophies and most of its expat teachers are Brits.

As to it being astronomical in cost or not only you know your financial situation. What is astronomical to some is reasonable or even cheap to others.

My kid is in the third grade (US). I was looking at some of DR private schools. I have a few questions for those who live there and do not mind providing honest feedback.
1) what it the general population of the students in the schools?
2) Are the classes really taught in English?
3) Do the schools provide transportation to and from the school?
4) How are the students treated, method of discipline?
5) Is the curriculum similar to the US?
6) Are the teachers certified in the subject they teach?
Interested in recently opened private schools.
Thanks

I don't think your general questions can be applied to all private schools in the DR. They are all different. A better way to go about it would be to research a specific school and ask specific questions here. Some posters may have experience with a specific school.

Tell use which city or area you are looking for. I'm familiar with SPM and Juan Dolio, but we have people all over the DR!
