I looked through this whole thread and could not see the name of the school that I visited yesterday, which exact name I forgot (yes I know zzzzzz). It was close to Hache...going into the center of Santiago.

Inscription was 19000, 5000 pesos a month. English the teaching language. The name "host something" Hmmm anybody that knows which school I am talking about and have any experience of it?

I was impressed with the school and the presentation of the Director.

Found the name...Hostos School.... Please let me know about ur experiences.

The International School of Sosua (Puerto Plata), ISS is accredited by SACS, located in Sosua, and serves the communities of Sosua, Cabarete, and Puerto Plata. It has Grades Pre-K through Grade 12 and offers diploma programmes from both the US and Dominican Republic. Courses are taught in English and teachers are certified in their field.

in the past, yes

great surroundings but poor discipline in the grade 7 to 12 range.

My children have been at the International School for 5 years.

I've seen the changes and the animosity towards the changes. The current director, (long may he stay) has been driven in his need to improve the school, both in discipline and education.

This morning, I received the new uniform regs for example - it's the latest in a long line of improvements towards that discipline you mention. With a school, it is not just about results, it's about learning to conform (even if life does not support conformity in the long run). My children have had detention, even at weekends recently, for non-conformity. I welcome that and hope that the current Director remains at the school to continue the improvements - even if they are a pain in the a** for me to drive them back on a Saturday morning for wearing the wrong shorts.

You Gotta Be Kidding Me !

You have to be kidding me. In the last three years the school has slide down to an unacceptable level. Threats against teachers, total disruption in the classroom, chaos in the library not to mention vulgar language coming out of the fifth grade class and up. You can't go five feet without hearing some fifth grade use the four letter word more often then Geroge Carlin. This place has no rules ! No rules for the students and no rules for the parents. It's a dump and drop school.

I do commend the director for taking his Saturday's to moderate the detention hall but come on, should he actually have to do something like that at a private school ? Parents need to buck up and take responsibility for their kids and set an example. Spend sometime in the library before you jump up on your chair and sing the phrases of joy.

and, FYI, the new dress code is really the old dress code but someone forgot to enforce it. They just deleted it without board approval. Just check around, why should my kids wear covered shoes when those incharge run around in flip flops. (nice example !)

Attitudes reflect leadership ! In the absence of leadership anarchy rules !

Does anyone know the costs and availability of the St.George school in SD? What does it cost in total per year for 3 rd grade? Is it difficult to get admission?

The Heritage School will open in August 2007. I am a teacher from the US, and will be teaching English Language Arts for grades 6-9 at Cap Cana Heritage School this upcoming school year. The website is Heritage School At Cap Cana. Let me know if you have any other questions.

This post is over three years old so I wonder how Sammy has made out as a teacher at the Heritage School and if he continues as one there. It would make for interesting reading.

My outlook generally for the DR is quite negative. I went to the website to check it out and could not find anything negative to express so I was overall quite impressed. The Heritage School looks like a gem, indeed.

Schools in Jarabacoa

Hi,
I am thinking about moving to Jarabacoa. I'd like to rent a house or apartment.
Can anyone help with opinions/facts on schools in Jara for a seven year old. What is the best school? What are the prices? What's best value for money?

Any advice/tips on renting, prices, etc also welcome. I need a three/four bedroom place.

Many thanks,

TG

Try Dolous Discovery School, Jarabacoa Christian School (JCS), or ANIJA.

Those are the best schools if you want your child to speak English. There are several other options if you are not a practising Evangelical Christian or don't want your child indoctrinated to that line of thinking.

Overall i agree with you but i dont think so that the school have a catholic influence.

Santa Rosa, Puerto Plata.
Offers Pre-K through Grade 12, located downtown, close to Malecon.
Oldest, and respected school, religious (catholic ) influences.
Spanish Speaking, many foreigners attend this school anyway.
Cost about 2000 RDS/ month, excl. books, uniforms, meals, inscriptions.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows a school that can teach spanish to a german/italian speaking person. Are there any schools that have german and/or italian speaking teachers for a 6 year old? We'll be in santo domingo in the 1st half of 2011.
Thanks for any help.

My child is now in the O&M Hostos school in Puerto Plata. We have not been happy with this school. In fact I would say it is the worst school I have ever had experience with. Recently I also found out that it is secretly a Jehovah Witness school. Parents are not allowed to visit classes, my son's class is freezing cold, and he is also directly under a vent. Today he is home from school because he is getting sick. There are no breaks between classes and toilets are forbidden before school starts. Not good when your child spends 45 min. in travel to get him there and then waits for class to start. I have to get him out of there. I had hoped to be able to keep him there until the end of the year, but now I am looking for an immediate alternative. There is more I could say.

If you are so unhappy with Hostos School, why don't you speak with the director? And as far as the school being a "secret Jehovah Witness school", I don't think so. The owners of the school are Catholic and the Director is Catholic, the teachers are a mix of catholic, christian, jehovah and other religions. None of the teachers promote their religion in the classroom. As far as your other complaints, they really should be addressed to the Director.

As it should be, especially as the school is named after Eugenio Maria de Hostos, an advocate of secular education

There is something wrong with any school that doesn't allow parents to observe the classroom.
