You hit on some good points. However, no poll is going to include expats that are not citizens as well.

I see it this way: Dominican leadership including the Attorney General, Tourism Ministers, Cruise Ship Port investors and Powerful Condo Developers influence road construction, Sosua Beach Renovation and the shutting down as much as possible of the hooker trade (of which Dominicans are not exactly proud). Those factions are far more powerful than any expat or John.

....but are the number one clients of the girls across the country.

What amazes me is that the people that have come to Sosua in the last few years have NO idea what we had here.

We had FAMILIES with those children. Locals with 3 generations out every evening. We had family tourist with children.

Sosua didn't pop up in 1940 saying... I'm a sex town. For decades and generations Sosua was a hard working town with honor.

The last 4 or 5 years does not define Sosua nor do those that keep saying; "if you don't like it leave." BULL Syte.

I think that a compromise is in order.

Sosua Bay Hotel open again?
Marina being installed?
River cleaned up?
All the places going to the beach rented?
Is Sands in Porto Chiquita up and running?
El Terbron (sp) all fixed up?
New Hospital near the airport?

The list is very long with no action.

Some wish to wage a war by supporting their NEW way of life without understanding that others HAD a comfortable life and living BEFORE you arrived. But I seldom see any posts recognizing that .... others live here also.

We don't wish to divert your daily routine of a beer at 10 AM and picking out your new friend.

Here we go again.
Sosua is far from being a sex town. If it is it's pretty pathetic compared to many others.
A little bit has a few bars and clubs, probably less than many other towns I can think of which are not considered sex towns so let's get a bit of perspective before we throw the baby out with the bath water,
We are discussing the wisdom of the move forcing bar owners to comply, at their own expense again, with what seems to be a fairly unintelligent , unhelpful and questionable ruling.

Your wish list is great,
I'll add some.

Pedestrianize PC once and for all and allow tables outside, Europe style.Delivery permits only during the day.
Convert wasteland from dumps to parking,
Curb the hideous menace of the motoconchos.
Train the police to help not hinder.
Form a real chamber of commerce where all business owners can participate.
Sort out the lights and power.
Drop the airport taxes.
Teach taxi drivers a little courtesy.
Make the beach alive in the evenings, Cabarete style, and sort out the toilets.

There are lots more I'm sure.I'm not convinced that the road paint is a game changer.

The past is a different country. We don't live there.

Was it not pretty much only expats that enjoyed this lifestyle in the past whilst most Dominicans wallowed in poverty.....as I remember.

Its the deep pockets that get what they want....the rest of the people get poorer.

Really, who in there right mind is going to visit this new mall behind the beach? I would think it will only be people bussed in on tours from wherever they think they will get these mythical tourists.

.

I have single male friends who tell me they have been coming to Sosua for almost 15 years "for the action". They say the biggest change is that the popular spots have moved further west on Pedro Clisante to what we now call downtown.
They tell me that back then, things were centered around the Four Roses and Dominos bars. (near where the Europa Hotel is currently located).

Yes it's been much more than the past few years as some poster mentioned. My grandfather came here.

WOW, you waited eight years to tell us this!
Did it ever occur to you that perhaps Willie is not the owner?

Might as well close them down. The charm of these bar was that you could sit down have a beer and look at the people going by.

I think you make sense! What is the point?
In a tropical country, outdoor, open air activities, make sense

Sosua is being set up for a take over. I think someone is deliberately trying to force people out of business. Then they or family member can buy the business up cheaply and go back to business as usual. But that time the control will be in the hands of the someone who orchestrated this whole charade, them or their family. Prostitution is big business, don't buy the line that this is for cleaning up the place. Could be big drug money behind the whole fa?ade.
Gringos and Canadians need a plan on how to talk softly while carrying a big stick. If you don't want things to change what can you do to persuade the government. Probably a Grinco/ Canadian Sosua smear campaign? This "I wanna do good" thing sound much to fishy!

Gringos and Canadians. Funny to hear it stated like that. Are they mutually exclusive?

I have no idea if your conspiracy theory is correct. If it is they have the tourism ministers, Attorney General of the DR and the mayor all locked up.

....but are the number one clients of the girls across the country.

I'm not saying this is a reasonable rationale, but over the last several years Sosua has gone from a relatively low key mongering spot to one of the major world hubs for prostitution. It's gone way past the sex forums to mainstream youtube and google searches.

You even had a gringo locked up not long ago for living in Sosua and recording and selling commercial porn on the internet; I think the authorities may even still have his passport to prevent him from leaving the country. There is a rumor that another gringo was extorted for several thousand dollars because he made a video with naked girls on youtube and got confronted when he made a return trip to Sosua.

Who knows if this kind of stuff plays into the current backlash?

Eisner/Disney forced NYC/Giuliani to "clean up" mid-town NYC before investing in the city.
So - if the complicated bureaucracy of NYC politics could be made to change things, then I can imagine it happening in Sosua.
Whether or not that is considered a conspiracy, I am not sure - but it happens.
