For the life of me, I just DO NOT understand these Dominican people.

I think we should all reFudiate their lack of table manners, as well as their lack of fashion sense and musical taste.

Now, please don't get me wrong. I don't want to be misunderestimated: I like the Dominican... the country, that is.

But you can't hide the fact that not only are they NOT BURPING, FARTING, AND BELCHING at the dinner table; they are also so many years behind on the latest Sears catalog offerings and Grand Ole Opry performances.

I mean, where can I purchase the latest Sans-a-belt and leisure suits?

And what about that God-awful bachata?

You reckon they've never heard of the latest Lawrence Welk tune over yonder?

I TELL YOU WHAT... The Dominican is a nice place to visit and whatnot, but I'm happy knowing as fewest Dominicans as possible.

maybe they do have more manners than you can imagine. Im sure some kids from the city, let loose all day, with hustler parents might not have any sense, but in the country side, its a little different. Could it be just the gringo treatment?

I still cant get over the "Staring at you thing" , where no one has told them its impolite to "stare down" people. In my neck of the woods, thats called looking for trouble. this phenomenon is popular with other cultures too.

Another set of bad manners I have encountered are Dominicans that dont realize that Spanish is a popular language, and you cant go around insulting people with your family. they just dont get it! When we fire back with our insults, their eyes bulge out of their sockets of embarrassment.

I remember a time , when I was in my teens. walking through the campo with some cousins, being called a DOMYORK with that stare down, knocking the kid on his arse, and being explained what it means. them country boys dont get out much! so I look like an alien to them.

Dominicans do have manners, addressing uncles and aunts as son tio son tia, abuelo, never by first name! you dont go into some ones fridge, or bedrooms , unless invited. you dont ask for money or gifts, and meals are set formally before you sit at the table. The people still care. these manners come from a strict upbringing, where dis respect gets dealt with.

Foreign people will always be foreign people - all over the world. We all believe
that our specific way is the right way...We ,the foreign people, have a very bad habit talking bad about everything, without thinking about the people sitting next to us. Nobody wants to listen to foreign people critizising their country.. In Europe we say " you don't like it here- go home".
Don't come here to change the people , because you will fail ..
It is not easy to be a foreigner anywhere in the world, however WE have to have education enough to respect the country we have chosen to live in. We don't like it - we have the option to leave.

I have had the exact same problems here as many of you. But it is THEIR country.

Perhaps you should consider opening a charm school in one of our local communities... be sure to bring a long the latest issue of Fashion Magazine with you as well.

Little batchata after a good meal and a cold beer.. well worth a listen.

Who in the hell is Lawrence Welk???

In the other hand....my Dominican wife has always complain about Gringo's manners of not saying "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon" when they enter a room with other people around (Doctor's office, etc.). For her it is a lack of education on their part!!!

i have said this a hundred times. expats never acknowledge the presence of anyone who was there before them. if they walk into a room full of people, they never say hello, but just either walk through, or take a seat. to some, myself included, that is a display of bad manners.

Speak for yourself !!! :)
I always give a loud buen dia, buen dia, yes repeated twice, its my trademark ;)
Then I go around shaking hands with the chaps I know, and with the ones I dont, also.....dont want them to feel left out, do we ?

As for " its their county, you cant change them, blablabla.......".
Well, by all means, they can talk with a mouth full of food and spray it all over the table. I dont mind.
They can jump on the food and start eating without waiting for everyone to be served. I dont mind.
They can even eat human foetus while snorting gunge out of their nostrils. I dont mind.
BUT I dont live in some commie state-owned farm, so in my house, no. :) :)

Now, before y'all go gettin all wrapped around the axle, please understand that this is not an indictment against all Dominicans. I'm simply speaking of the ones generally come into contact with.
Ex; gf will say, "send me photos of xyx". And I'll shut her down with a "no". She will ask why, and I explain that its because she didn't ask properly (not the first time). "but I asked you to send me the photos correctly". At that point, I simply move onto another subject, and in true dominican fashion the issue of the photos is quickly forgotten.

It is a cultural thing that the words please and thank you are virtually non-existent, or am I missing the mark altogether? Call me an a-hole, but this chaps my ass like not much can.

I am Dominican and me and my family ALL say these things ALL THE TIME, i have also seen Most of the people saying them THEREFORE i will suggest that you FIX that Ignorant GENERALIZATION that you did your DR bashing post.

I wonder what kind of people are you surrounded by...

It is a quasi failed state with very little functioning public infrastructure, 90 % of people even at the highest echelons of society come from non functioning families. Is there any wonder as to why people are insular and have no interest of the well being of others ?

Nice to hear you like it so much you are posting on DR1, you live here? Najayo maybe?:p

Yes and a couple of weeks ago , my brother in law referred to his Mom (My suegra) as VIEJA I told him to apologize and not to talk that way to her, especially in front of my kids, and he looked at me with a tilted head asking why???? when SHE chimed in and said no ,no no , you don't understand...... Its a term of respect and carino ............ go figure............ If i ever called my Mom Old lady or Old one ........... well......it wouldn't be pretty ............

That is right, actually you would use that with a very close to you person...it is the same use we have here for a word like NEGRA o NEGRO, that while most of the people here will find it even offensive making it equial to the term Nigger, etc, on the DR is actually in use between couples or very close people, is also a term of respect and carino, not a racist one as most of the people that ignore how the Dominican spanish is constructed.

Didn?t realize Lucifer is Dominican, missed that one.

he is. the reason why most people miss it is because the guy is the most mellow, laid back dude in the site. he takes all the slights and insults, and always holds his composure. he never tries to get into people?s faces , with some gangsta crap.

yup..he is Dominican, and cool with it.

The reason I love him, he doesn't take himself seriously or us idiots who post about Doms :)

i could not have said it better. the guy has watched his country and people used as the butt of some vicious commentary, and has rolled with the punches in the most admirable of ways.
