Putting Italy and France in the same sentence is the an insult to.......Italy (and I am French).

French are hardly playing this year, they are embarrassing to watch :(

I believe on wednesday the USA game and the England game are both kicking off at 10 am here. Does anyone know who is showing which game?

I'll watch the England game with you and Colin, if you'll have me.

I'll be far too emotionally involved with the USA game, and I can simply read the post-mortems after the officials miss-call yet another match.

Besides, I rather enjoyed watching the lack-luster performance of the English team. It kept everything nice and quiet!

I'll wager Rick would be willing to play the English match, if we ask nicely.

good question,
which channels will show the different games now??
each group the 2 final matches run at the same time, so nobody can take advantage of the result of the group opponents game.
i didn't figure it out with the channels, yet.
anybody has a clue?
thanks
Mike

btw,

The last games of every group go at the same times. This is to avoid teams knowing the results of the other teams in their groups in advance. Otherwise some teams may not try too hard if they know they are either in or out before the last game. That is not fair to the other teams in the bracket.

Can anyone tell me if the referees in question relating to the above mentioned 'bad calls', actually consulted with their linesmen before making the final decision re yellow/red cards, hand balls/penalties etc? Did any of the linesmen actually signal an infringement to the referee that he might not himself have spotted/noticed?
You are 14 years out of date. There are no longer such things as "linesmen". Their job title changed in 1996 to "referee's assistant" to reflect their supposed role.

This is not just a verbal quibble because I entirely agree with you, BushBaby, that the referees are not exercising their right (and in my opinion as a former soccer referee, their duty) to consult their assistants if there is any likelihood that the latter might have seen more, or seen more clearly. All referee's assistants are qualified referees in their own right, and in the World Cup Finals are presumably highly experienced and reputed in their own respective countries, so they ought to be trusted.

The modern game is so fast and the players are so well coached to be devious and dishonest that it is impossible for the referee to see all that is going on.

I also suspect the assistants are often backward in coming forward, either happy to let the referee take all the flak for a wrong or controversial decision or frightened that if they make waves they won't get another international appointment with all the perks that entails.

Certainly I don't remember a single instance of such a consultation on a key decision in this World Cup.

I think you will find that they are in radio contact with each other, also with the fourth official.

Koman Coulibaly that refereed the USA vs Slovenia game has been dropped by FIFA.

On a side note, each ref is being paid US$50,000 plus expenses for the tournament (source: CBC Canada).

Well we all know what damage assistants can do, I am sure Robert will remember 1966 final England/Germany in overtime, where the linesman 'overruled' the referee on the England ball that hit the cross bar and bounced on the German goal line, causing line chalk to fly up and the ball bounced outward from the goal.

In soccer, the whole ball has to be behind the goal line, for it to be declared a goal.

YouTube - Das ber?hmte "Wembley-Tor" / The famous "Wembley goal" 1966

The referee had ruled this no goal but then he consulted with the linesman after which, amazingly, he subsequently changed the call to 'goal.'

The linesman was Russian and when asked about the call on his death bed many years later, he allegedly said 'Stalingrad.'

I am sure since the game was in England, that this was also a factor.

great info,
and yes, they have lil microphones in the ear and a speaker in front of their mouth to communicate.
so London,
as the Man from that field,
how 'qualified and professional' are they when even with modern technics involved some's 'judgement' is so poor like seen in this Worldcup?
the 4th referee has a screen and can see it all again in slow motion to give an opinion/better view in case something slipped the live-view of the head referee,
and i of course agree here,
the game is fast, the field is wide/large to overview any squarefeet at the same time, and yes, the highly paid pros in the game are very well trained to use any dirty trick known to mankind in soccer history,
so should be the Team of 4 to observe the actions of the 22.
like the clear hit into the face of the Honduran player by the spanish striker today. hard to see for the refs on the field b/c the ball been not at that sceene at that fraction of a second when it happened, but on the screen it had been right away and very clear.
the same when a ball pounces off the shoulder of an defender on the goalline where the Man did not try to put a hand on the ball and had clearly no chance to get out of the way of the fast approaching ball, but whistled ''handplay'' and given a red card and also a penalty.

and an even other kinda ''complain'' about different referee behavior is for example the 'be in love with' that cardgame like seen in the game of Germany against Serbia.
i saw 2 Teams playing 90 minutes of faiplay soccer, which is btw a contact sport unlike basketball or baseball or golfing, there been cards given for nearly each foul in the early stage of the game, one been a game result deciding 2nd one to germany's striker Miroslav Klose which did not only effect that game but will also let him miss the important last game of the group round. a simple foul is just that, a foul, and get's punished by a free kick for the opponent. the card game is named Poker and can be played after the game in the Casinos of Cape Town.
on such case a 5th or 6th referee or a thousand ESPN slow motion repetitions of course would not help a thing, because it was just a ''professional'' trying to play the wrong game. from so many referees in the world to choose, the FIFA could do a better job than to pick some who would not stand the 3rd league in a mayor soccer country.

o.k., needed rant over.
i am sorry for Ghana, but Germany will kick 'em home.
and the US Boys deserve to advance, too, just for the missjudgements.

lolol,
i would guess today's open world provides a bit different of a base for such to happen than back in the '60's.

i say a quick blink on the screen for the repeat slow motion by the 4th referee while the ball usually is anyways dead/game stopped and a hint about the thingy he saw on that screen towards the head referee should notbe a big deal but would be very helpful and in the 1st place very FAIR, compared to some game-deciding poor decisions seen so far.
