President and Vice Presidential candidates can resign

The president of the Junta Central Electoral, Dr César Estrella Sadhalá, said that any person nominated for a vice presidential or presidential candidate can be substituted by another, unless it happens shortly before the election, when his name will already be on the ballot. He explained that the substitution should be announced on the day of the resignation of the original candidate “si da tiempo, o si no se mantendra en la boleta.” He said that the law does not specify until what date before the election a resignation is valid. “What cannot be done is obligate a person to resign nor can a ballot paper be changed,” he said.
