The eighth child has died as a result of the Salcedo carnival fire. The National Health Service (SNS) reported on Tuesday, 26 March 2024 the death of 14-year old Esteban Hernandez who had been hospitalized at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital burn center in Santo Domingo. His death brings to eight the number of fatal victims of the fireworks explosion during the closing of the Salcedo Carnival on Sunday, 10 March 2024. The deceased did not survive burns on 90% of his body.
Two other minors with severe burns suffered on the tragic day of the Salcedo Carnival remain hospitalized at the Robert Reid public hospital. One is under observation in the recovery room, while another is still in the Intensive Care Unit, due to the severity of his injuries.
Meanwhile, in the Thelma Rosario Burn Center, a non-profit, in Santiago, a 12-year-old minor is stable but ventilated as he battles third-degree burns on 70% of his body.
The SNS, through its Mental Health Department, has offered mental assistance to the 18 families of victims affected by fireworks burns, that occurred during the closing of the Salcedo Carnival.
