Haiti Update: Jean Jumeau resigns; Sunrise Airways offers flights from Cap Haitien to Miami

In a news story breaking on 26 March 2024, it is now known that Rene Jean Jumeau has resigned from being one of the nine members of the Presidential Transition Council appointed to replace Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry is said to be in California, USA. He is impeded from returning to Haiti but says he must sign off on the members and publish these in the Le Moniteur, the official journal in Haiti, for the new council to go into effect. The UN-US-Caricom endorsed council has yet to name its president.

Jean Jumeau would have represented the Rassemblement pour une Entente Nationale et Souveraine (REN) in the Caricom-approved Transitional Presidential Council (TPC). He had served as minister for energy matters during the government of President Michel Martelly (2011-2016).

This is the second resignation of those designated. Dominique Dupuy also resigned and was replaced by Smith Augustine, the present Haitian ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

In a new development, Sunrise Airways, a Haiti-based airline, has resumed its flights offering a frequency from Les Cayes to Cap Haitien and then connecting to Miami, Florida as of 25 March 2024. Haitian Times reports the resumption of service marks the first international commercial flight operations since air travel from Port-au-Prince International Airport was suspended after a violent attempt affected a flight at that airport.

Operations have resumed with four scheduled flights. All Port-au-Prince flights remain suspended.
