The Central Bank’s report on the economy for the period January-June 1996 also says that communications recorded the highest growth out of all the GDP components with a 22.8% increase when compared to the same period last year. The increase is the result of greater competition as new communications companies entered the market.

The president of Mundogas, Jean Francois Coste, denied that there is a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as reported by the Asociación Nacional de Distribuidores de Gas (ASONADIGAS). According to Mr. Coste, 360,000 gallons of LPG were supplied to the local market this week, which is sufficient to meet the demand.

The president of the Interamerican Bank for Development (IDB), Enrique Iglesias, feels that the Dominican Republic has huge growth possibilities for its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and considers that the country can achieve higher expansion rates.
