A lot of businesses closed in Sosua

One of the better ones they have had. It was so good to see a big crowd of locals, expats and a few tourists have a good no hassle time. We need more of this kind of thing.

I think for the month of October there will be jazz on the street every Friday and the street obviously closed ( a very good thing)

Why in the "low season" just baffles me.

I think they should just leave that stage by the casino permanently and have different musicians come every weekend, or even during the week, have dance performance, comedy acts etc. (doesn't have to be top quality, just something to bring out the people) - I don't think it cost much and it brings out the families with kids and also couples for a fun time (locals and ex-pats, even, dare I say, snowbirds and tourists), a nice place to hang out, away from the so called red-light zone. Chicas and mongers won't be interested in this sort of activity, so it helps the town in the direction that the authorities like.

This is a kind of positive action that they can take to change things, but hey that is just too complicated, let's close down a few more places... !

I think the sooner they accept that the few meters of downtown is really the red-light district - like every other city in the world (we still have Soho in London) and start working to promote and change other parts of the town, the sooner Sosua can grow and prosper.

How would you propose getting it over with? I'm just curious about what measures people would be comfortable with them taking.

I'm not against the idea. It would not affect my time in Sosua. I've developed a personal elaborate strategy for avoiding prostitutes there. I don't walk through the intersection of PC and Dr. Rosen, and at the beach, I walk on the beach and not up top. Also, when I hear a psst, I just ignore and know that no one is talking to me.

Sounds like a lot of avoidance strategy.
The psst may be a warning that a coco nut is falling.
Hope Sosua is worth all the extra effort.

A Presidential visit

President Danilo Medina made an unannounced visit to Sos?a
RecentlyThe President listened attentively and promised to look at these problems seriously.

================================================================
My editorial comment: Do people not yet see how the urban renewal changes in Sosua are coming directly with the consent from the President on down?

Sosua and Cabarete are still the same old places after all the years, without any major improvements.
A few hotels or condos won't change the important things, neither will the President's visit with political posturing.
After all the talk it will be a long time before we see urban renewal with real changes in the infrastructure.
Things like a hospital with competent doctors, highways without potholes, a bypass of Sosua and Cabarete, electricity, potable water, decent sidewalks, street lighting, control of crime.

Is electricity any worse in Sosua/Cabarete than most of the country?

A kinky plan is working....... gone away from Sosua

Dov1984 is exactly the kind of sex tourist whom "the powers that be" are trying to drive away from Sosua. (He is going to Cabarete...... )

There is no plan mentioned anywhere by any government officials to create red light districts. Those in charge are not interested in promoting the DR as a sex tourist destination.
The war on whores seems to have the aim to drive prostitution out of sight in order to attract non-sex tourists and retired people. Period.

Ha Ha,
The war is driving Mr. Muscle (all 250 lbs of him) with his love of beautiful Latinas to Cabarete.
Maybe more of his friends will attend soon to strut their stuff on Cab beach.

The new project at La Esplanada should be a substantial upgrade to the current hotel choices in Sos?a. Excluding the Gansevoort property the new Esplanada renovation will be the first AI in many years and provide a level of accommodations and services currently not available here in Sos?a.
It's the investors money and time will tell if it is a success financial and otherwise.
In my view the derelict property should be torn down and build new.
The location and surrounding area is very poor.
If I was an athletic visitor on a 1-2 week vacation in a "high end resort" I would want to be on a beach, hard sand for running and waves for surfing or body surfing and crystal waters with a reef to scuba dive.
If I'm in an AI I would not want the restaurant or property open to the public.
Unpleasant walk at night, unpleasant jog in the morning being chased by the roving dog packs.
Too many derelict buildings in the area to make it upscale, sidewalks and street lighting in very poor condition.
If at least La Passion or CMC were open, the athletic visitors would have a resting place at half way point to work on their cardio, or enjoy a refreshing beverage such as a wheatgrass smoothie.:classic:

Then why does everyone keep mentioning retirees?

You really are on the inside.

I guess with the lovely girls gone Sosua will be a perfect retirement haven for the snowbirds and condo crowd,
Alas without much infrastructure.
The current sidewalks and lack of lighting would necessitate some good orthopaedic surgeons for the old folks though.

This thread is a downer! Basically the DR, particularly Sousa is a second rate filthy and dangerous place. If you want a second rate vacation, this is the place for you

Unless the national government wants to put some serious money into the place, Sosua is unlikely to transform itself. Sosua is what it is... I like the sleepy little town with restaurants like Britannia and such... Hope these businesses can survive the fluctuating rules and policies that change every month. I hope the local mayor and tourism director now realizes that the national government is not doing much to help the area despite all their promises...

Yeah, it is, but it's also full of beauty and beautiful people. It just depends what filters you want to wear on any particular day. If you want to see a dirty, violent place, there it is. If you want to see beautiful people going about their life, tada, there it is too.

I had Sunday dinner yesterday in a ramshackle, listing shack with a family. The shack would be more suitable for the campo, but there we were with urban puerto plata right outside. The sunlight and breeze flowed through the cracks in the siding making for a comfortable well lit environment. The "dad" is our regular motoconcho driver, and several neighborhood children appeared and it was obvious that this was their home. Noted as I can never seem to figure out which children are which because they seem to freely flow among the houses. Wonderful meal served by a proud mother on a white lace table clothe. Bit salty for my taste, but that goes with the territory. There was a moment of drama as the oil drum serving as cistern overflowed just outside the open back door. The mother rapped on the neighbor's shack and a lose board gave way, a hand appeared to take the filling house inside. A quick 50 pesos refilled the cocacola supply from the Colmado 20 paces a way, my treat. It was a delightful time.

To quote a lyrics: 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device'. And, I'd add that we have our own keys as well.

You mean like Ray was doing when he owned the Britannia and the street was closed to traffic!
I agree, I liked what he did then and I think it will still work now.
