He's in Santo Domingo. Was inaugurating the fourth phase of the Malecón
"El acto de inauguración fue realizado sin la presencia del presidente Luis Abinader, quien no pudo realizar el viaje debido a que las condiciones climáticas no eran favorables para helicópteros, el medio de transporte que tenía previsto utilizar el gobernante."

cc @JD Jones :
Cool, They renovated the old go-kart race track. More fun than a bridge.

JD. Those outside lanes coming and going concern me. An invitation for more road carnage especially during holidays like Easter and Christmas when drunken driving is at its peak. It would be safer to block these extra lanes until they are expanded well beyond the bridge on both side to allow safer integration. I used to cross the old bridge without a second thought. I’ll be on high alert from now on.

Me too. Zippering in traffic is a national pastime here and coming off the bridge on both ends is going to be good for some interesting interactions.
I don't see any lighting either, to me that's a must have.

We need an over/under date wager for when is the first person to bust thru the guard rails and take a swim. I'm going to say before 7 January.

Paliza wasn't the only one present there from high ranking government positions. Also the governor of Puerto Plata province (the woman in the middle) and the Puerto Plata senator (the woman with the orange.) Paliza is the closest to the President of everyone there.

Btw, Pliza has developed bags under the eyes since the last time I saw him in person. There are creams for that. lol

As with all government projects inauguration, the Catholic priest giving the blessing. Shouldn't have to say it, but even paid for by DR tax payers including all that pay ITBIS most times they buy something (includes all the expats on that one.)

You can see ponding on the bridge. I fear that if that is not corrected it will cause the asphalt to eventually start lifting.

But with the detour beginning to show potholes and yesterday's over the road flooding the open bridge is welcome.

I too am surprised there isn't any lighting.

So the big push was to get it finished so Abinader could inaugurate the opening and he was a no-show. Bad form.

Wonder if this is one of those projects that's done and forgotten. Quite concerning that there's no lighting, and also already parts with puddles, which just indicates how uneven the road is. And also don't really understand the reasoning behind the 4 lanes when there's only 2 on both sides. Yeah they are "planning" for a 4 lane road in the future. But we all know that's more like 2040 or even further down the line, at least enough time for those lines to have faded and needing repainting. So why not just make 2 wider lanes instead? Well, at least it's going to be great to not have to take the alternative route, which is also probably going to be left to its decay.

The bridge could have been built much quicker if they did not have to negotiate to make it wider. Why did that happen and not just replace the two lane bridge?

The government has a plan to make the road from Puerto Plata to Cabarete 4 lanes.
I am fairly certain that is why the bridge is 4 lanes. But only the shadow knows for sure.

Too bad they didn't light the bridge for do the asphalt properly. But hey, this is the DR.

We just came across the bridge on our motorbike in the rain. I didn't know it was open and thought that I had missed the desvio.

The highway is going to be widened and the bridge will be there when that happens. Remember the other bridge was built by Trujillo and his government ended 62 years ago. The bridge was older than that. The current bridge might be there for the next 62 years, maybe longer.

I am not holding my breath for the road from Puerto Plata to Cabarete to be 4 lanes as was discussed years ago.
Boy will that cause some issues with power, water, homes and businesses built right on the current highway, etc...

It's DR1. This forum has always been like that. Even some Dominicans have remarked about this in off forum conversations.
Why is it a good thing that it took so long to replace this bridge?

I understand the concept of time here is fluid compared to other countries, but it took a ridiculous length of time in this case to replace the bridge.
