Still heavy wind, Thunder and rain here in SD/ZC. Power has been off since 1pm. Talked with a friend a few blocks away and there is power there.

Is this a Dominican thing to stroll out in the rain? When I saw a group of boys doing it I thought ok just kids being kids. Then I saw a couple just strolling along. Funny

This shows you just how fragile the infrastructure is here and what a precarious position we are in here on the north coast. If we had been hit by either Irma or Maria, not even a direct hit, just close, many sections of the north coast hwy would be washed out by storm surge, the hwy from GH to Tenares would be gone as well as Sabaneta/Moca, Ruta Touristica, and the hwy between Pto. Plata and and Santiago. With the lack of resources and manpower here in the DR, we here on the north coast could be isolated for months w/o any way to get food, water, fuel, etc. here except by helicopter and boat.

And if Irma or Maria had made landfall in La Romana and gone across the DR and exited around Puerto Plata, the DR would have been in just as bad a shape as poor Puerto Rico. A total humanitarian disaster.

on the whatsapp group i sawpictures where it seems to be gone completely,
do i remember taht correct?
what a waste of labour and money to not finish such costy project on time.

Mike

Actually it was a good design idea for a large single span.

Those precast beams that I mentioned were to be post tensioned. Basically they have tension rods inside the beam that once in place they tension up to a very high stress to maximise the load capacity of the beams.

Maybe thanks to Maria my bolt hole run to SD is no more for a few weeks at least.

Probably two miles from you in Gazcue. No rain, just a few puddles and electricity is on.

It's a good thing the north coast does not get hit by hurricanes (or even real close calls).

Cabarete is rather quiet at this time (10:00 PM). Feels like MARIA has moved on. I was talking to someone who said that if people here were not aware there was a hurricane in the area, it would have been business as usual in most locations today.

Two gringo tourists were detained (arrested) by CESTUR on Cabarete beach. They had decided that they would take a swim in the midst of hurricane watch. Now they will enjoy the carcel and lose a few pesos before they get out

Very calm indeed now.  Where I am in Cabarete, estimated 60-70mph wind gusts didn't feel like any normal day.   No trees down here.  Irma took care of our weakest trees.   Waves are higher now, some breaking over Sans Souci's veranda.

Firstly they need to design a new bridge. But to do that they need a soils investigation.

The design is piled foundations, they formed the steel cages and the piling rig was on site drilling the piles last week.

In the interim they precast all the bridge deck beams which are ready alongside the road.

The idea is you put in the piles and columns form a beam either side and then crane in the already made precast beams.

Programme

Feasibility and funding plus soils investigation and report 1 to 2 months
Design 1 to 2 months
Tender and Procurement of contractor 1 month
Precast deck beams and cure for 30 days 3 months
Piling and bridge support beams 1 month
Place precast beams and pour deck 1 month
Cure and surfacing etc 1/2 month.

So in reality they have wasted maybe two months but as you know in DR nothing happens from December to February in public works.

It is a process for public works which would not happen if the country had a more dynamic competitive business environment rather than a brotherhood.
Look at the picture.

They ARE building a new bridge. You can see construction equipment in the background on the right.

The old bridge will be torn down.

aside of some last showers along the Northshores Maria today really is leaving the DR.
for the rest of the Country rainfalls should be less strong, as cloud fields of course wander over our territory, left behind by their Mommie Maria who left this counrty.

Today is Clean Up Day!!!
so tell the wifes to get it MOVING.

Hot, sunny and very humid in Santo Domingo. Onamet has discontinued the hurricane alerts for the country. But says the humidity is likely to continue to bring rains nationwide.

yes, the water is not over, at least not for every area.
here we have now the 2nd bypass of thunder for this morning.
power comes and goes.
wind changes from dead calm when clear to very gusty when thunder is heard and short rainburst of just a few minutes come through.
