what the hell happened to contanco we know and love? the man who was too stingy to spare 100 dollars for a chica who tossed his salad? the man who was immune to the charms of dominican ladies? now he became a shadow of his former self, exchanging messages with barely literate barrio rat?

I guess you could have added this to your post reflecting my Island fever demise,

"You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
SHE really wasn't where it's at
After SHE took from you everything SHE could steal".. :classic:

My Wife took Spanish Classes before we came to the DR and now has a private tutor and was forced to learn b/c she volunteers teaching music to kids and everyone ONLY speaks Spanish there.
Maybe take a class or two?

I agree about Google translate, my maid used to type something in Spanish and i tried to convert it to English and it was impossible to read b/c she couldn't spell!! Now I mostly understand what she says so it's not a problem anymore :)

For me, total immersion was the answer. I started learning as many nouns as possible, then some verbs. I still do not worry about conjugating verbs. If present, I use the infinitive with ahora or hoy. If I refer to past I say something like ante, or otra mes to preface the infinitive. If future I use va or manana with the infinitive. It is not perfect but it seems to work. If I do not know the noun for something I make it up. In that way, bedsheets become ropa de kama. Or conch shell becomes la casa de lambi. I run into problems though when trying to explain a concept such as why gringos pay more for free range chickens in the US and Canada. The best I could come up with was that a free range chicken was happier so there is a cost for pollo feliz.
All of that to say... just have fun with it. Tell her to have patience. And you do not have to understand everything she says ;-)

Contango received another texto...

aveces no se que decirte para hacerte feliz, pero quiero que sepa que quiero algo bonito con tigo pero no se mucho de ti perdon por esto.

Am I correct with my translation... "sometimes do not know what to say to make you happy, but I want you to know that I want something nice with you but you do not know much sorry for this".

Sometimes I don't know what to say to make you happy. But I want you to know
that I want something nice with you but I don't know much about you. Sorry for
this.

You had it just about right.:)

But I don't know much about you, pardon me for this. is the literal translation of the last sentence. You have everything else correct. BTW, I'm digging this thread man! LOL

"Contango received another texto... "

Hilarious!

I'm trying, but I am back home now. I need a clearer path, I have 3 books, a dictionary, a thesaurus, and hundreds of printed pages... I haven't been able to find an A to Z.. I think with language I am a slower learner.

You have to understand that a lot of people in the DR do not know how to read or write properly.
For that matter they also speak poorly, but you have to learn how to decipher "written" or spoken Dominican.

She sounds intelligent educated enough. She uses the subjunctive tense.. quiero que sepa...

much of this also may be attributed to the idiocy of the "thumb speak" shorthand of texting.

Contango, you got that one right.

Does this mean that you are not going to take us out on your dates anymore?

Well I got a few more this morning.. and I guess more than anything, even beyond the actual translations, what does it mean.

1. buen dia amor como amanece? my translation, "good day love as the sun rises"? ( why with a question mark?)

2. i lo que siento mas abraso. my translation, "I have feeling more hug" ?

3. estoy contigo tu me atrae , my translation, " I am with you, you me attract" ?

As always thank you everyone for proper translations...

There's no direct translation, but it would be something like "how's the new day treating you?"

2. i lo que siento mas abraso. my translation, "I have feeling more hug" ?

Out of context, I guess. No real meaning.

3. estoy contigo tu me atrae , my translation, " I am with you, you me attract" ?

I'm with you, I'm attracted to you

The reason why you're not getting much help from google translate is because there are spelling and grammar errors, so an automated translator will not work very well.

You are correct again, its excruciating.. Way back if you remember when i had the other Chica, "meet me at La bomba" .
In that thread you posted without understanding the language you will never be able to "make up after a fight"..
Now this wasn't a fight but it was something very bizarre, things got twisted..

i don't even know where to start with this! i have been losing every argument i ever had! once they begin from talking in a normal manner into using more that 200 words per minute without having a break, oh man!

Sometimes I take her words and try and guess the correct spelling. like abraso is really abrazo.. and i will change them up in the translator or try on my own.. In fairness to her she is using an old alcatel phone where each letter needs to be separated in a text message, And when she receives a text message the letters are all spaced with asterisks..

your problem is in translating English to English.. or gargled google to english

you need to just think a bit and you will get it..

as in .. as the sun rises.. is to get up.. USE THE DICTIONARY

not that I do not want to still date you guys... but this way you will learn

so .. Good morningy, honey, how did you sleep? or Good morning my love, how was your awakening?

I have feeling more hug.... What I feel more hug... I am feeling more adored.
]
are you holding out on us? Are you just giving us part of this?

I am with you. You attract me.

Ok.. now.. Now that you have her hooked. I trust that you are not just playing with this girl... this is not like the one with Roberto who is going to have to drop someone to be with you?
