Through its Commission for Natural Resources and Environment, the Academy reported a “drastic change” in water quality and coloration. The US Embassy in Santo Domingo reminds travelers that one of the most important steps before traveling abroad is to consider purchasing international medical insurance. The US Department of State strongly urges US citizens and US residents to consult with their medical insurance company prior to departure to confirm whether their policy applies overseas and if it covers emergency expenses such as a medical evacuation.
A note in the US Embassy website reminds Americans that US medical insurance plans seldom cover health costs incurred abroad unless supplemental coverage is purchased. Medicare does not cover medical costs outside the United States. Many travel agents and private companies offer insurance plans that include coverage for medical care overseas, including emergency services and evacuations.
The US Embassy makes the point that those seeking medical attention may...

The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic has released the inflation numbers for January, and the 0.4% for a year-on-year rate just blow 5% (4.98%), pushed by an increase in food prices.
According to the Central Bank, the monthly Consumer Price Index can be explained mostly by the increases registered in the group of food ad non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for 45.68% of the inflation, as there was a 0.68% overall increase in these items.
The inflation rate was also influenced by increases in hotels and restaurants, education, diverse goods and services, and housing. These increases were partially offset by a decrease in transportation costs, but overall, the year-to-year inflation is placed at 4.98%. The index excludes some items that normally do not respond to the nation’s liquidity issues, such as those foods that can vary wildly in price, and fuels and services that are...

This robust start to the year suggests that the upward trend observed throughout 2025 remains firmly in place, providing a critical cushion for the national economy.
According to the BCRD, these funds from the Dominican diaspora act as a “multiplier effect” for the nation, driving domestic consumption, boosting local investment, and providing vital financial support to the country’s most vulnerable sectors.
US economic resilience drives growthThe Central Bank identified the economic performance of the United States as the primary engine behind the figures, with 79.4% of all formal flows originating from the United States. Analysts point to a stable American labor...

Hospitals around the country were also part of the project, including the Maternity Hospital La Altagracia in Higüey and Juan Pablo Pina in San Cristobal.

The recent Vatican intervention in the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo has laid bare a long-festering crisis of transparency within the Dominican Republic’s most powerful religious institution. The effective removal of Metropolitan Archbishop Francisco Ozoria Acosta from administrative and financial governance, relegating him to a largely ceremonial role, is being viewed by observers not as an isolated scandal, but as the inevitable collapse of a system long protected by institutional silence and a lack of external oversight. Ozoria has yet to reach the retirement age of 75 years in October of this year.
A culture of institutional silenceFor years, allegations of mismanagement and irregularities within the archdiocese remained a matter of vox populi, widely discussed in private and local media but met with persistent silence from the Church hierarchy. It was only after reports of...

The United States’ Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has closed its office at the US Embassy until further notice. The story made international media headlines.

The US Embassy explicitly has stated that the fight against narco-terrorism will continue at the same “robust pace” through other channels (such as the Miami and Puerto Rico field offices) while the internal investigation is conducted.
To corroborating the continuing drug trafficking operations of DEA agents in the DR, the National Drug Control Agency reported that in the early hours of Sunday, 15 February 2026 the largest narcotics seizure in the history of the Dominican Republic’s fight against organized crime was carried out in the waters south of Baní, carried out in close tactical coordination with United States authorities. A baseball catcher holds a key strategic role in the game. The catcher acts as the “field general” or “quarterback” of the defense, responsible for calling pitches, framing strikes, blocking balls, throwing out baserunners, and managing the pitcher’s performance. Positioned behind home plate, he controls the game’s pace, aligns the infield, and offers leadership.
Team DR managers, Nelson Cruz and Adrian Beltre have chosen Austin Wells to be the catcher of the Dominican Dream Team to the World Baseball Classic. The 2026 World Baseball Classic is an international professional baseball tournament between 20 national baseball teams, planned to be the sixth iteration of the World Baseball Classic (WBC), and to be played from 5 to 17 March 2026.

Economist Miguel Collado Di Franco writes in Diario Libre that high taxes and the complexity in filing is the main obstacle to the formalizing of small business. The finding is confirmed in surveys carried out by the Central Bank and the Ministry of Industry & Commerce.
While large businesses in the Dominican Republic enjoy major tax reduction schemes, such as free zones and the tourism sector, small businesses are penalized with the regular tax schemes conceived for all businesses.
Collado says this reality is behind the low rate of formalization of small businesses that prefer to stay outside of the tax radars, keeping low profiles. Surveys indicate that 85% of small businesses are informal operations, or about 404,000 entities.
Collado says that in addition to the tax burden, the companies also cringe under the burden of high electricity costs. The red tape required to get...

The service industry has solidified its position as the primary engine of the Dominican labor market, El Dia reports. According to recent data from the Dominican Social Security System (SDSS) for November 2025, the sector accounts for 1,265,240 contributing workers out of a total private-sector pool of 1,695,256 employees.
The dominance of this sector is not limited to headcount; it also leads in the number of contributing employers. Of the 107,266 private-sector employers registered, the service subsectors, led by commerce, represent 83.81% of the total. Specifically, commerce alone accounts for 32.81% of all contributing employers, followed by “other services” at 21.34%.
Historically, this reliance on the service sector reflects the Dominican Republic’s transition from an agrarian economy to one centered on tourism and retail, which now accounts for approximately 60% of the nation’s...

A recent ruling by the Superior Administrative Court (TSA) ordering the exclusion of private land from the Jaragua National Park registry has triggered a firestorm of criticism from environmental groups and legal experts. The decision, which favors the company Inversiones del Sur, S.R.L., has been labeled a “dangerous precedent” that could undermine the integrity of the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP).
The court’s decision stems from a legal dispute involving the Gadhala-María family, that argues that their property rights were being violated by administrative omissions. They claimed that although Law 266-04 reduced the park’s boundaries two decades ago, the official cadastral records were never updated to reflect these changes, preventing them from developing or selling their land.
Jaragua National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a critical...

After two years of delays, the 2C extension of the Santo Domingo Metro is set to begin operations for the general public on 24 February 2026.
As the first metro line built under President Luis Abinader’s administration, the project broke ground in February 2022. The 7.3-kilometer stretch, which connects the María Montez station at Kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway to the Los Alcarrizos municipality, was originally scheduled to open in February 2024.
The government has attributed the significant delays to a decentralized construction strategy, which involved dividing the project among more than 30 different contractors. While officials intended for this approach to distribute the workload across multiple local companies, it led to logistical challenges and timeline setbacks. Additionally, the quality of construction has remained under public scrutiny throughout the...

For decades, the Dominican Republic has been the buffer zone for Haiti with the country benefiting from trade and low cost labor, but also absorbing an uneducated and undocumented population and thus picking up heavy social costs. For decades, Haiti has continued in the grasp of a small group of business people who live abroad but control the country’s borders and supplies.
There has been hope for US involvement to bring major changes that will reinstate Haiti on the road to development. But a recent column by Nelson Espinal Baez in Diario Libre warns the buffer zone role of the Dominican Republic in regards to Haiti may be instead strengthened by the Trump administration.
In his recent column for Diario Libre, Nelson Espinal Báez, a lawyer who is an Associate MIT-Harvard Public Disputes Program at Harvard Law School, presents a sobering...
