Thanks. does this service run through the phone? I am looking for internet service that would not tie up the phone line. I'd like to start using the magic jack however the house in DR does not currently have internet. We did in the past but it made the phone line busy.

So i need to know what internet service and how much? I'm paying $10 right now for a phone card that gives me about 2 1/2 hrs of talk time. I'm assuming it would be cheaper to pay for internet service over there and fedex a magic jack over.

Magic Jack is a VOIP (voice over internet protocol) so you need internet connection for it to work. It does not go over a phone line. You can use it either with a phone - portable - or headset. They do work great, less bandwidth than Skype so better quality calls.

My magicjack works 24/7 and I call forward all my magicjack incoming calls to my google voice which forwards it to my gizmo5 (programmed on the sip device). Hehehehe, I know I confused many here with my chain of systems but it reality it means: if you call my magicjack my gizmo phone rings which is simply cordless phone connected to a vonage type box. My laptop is off and my magicjack is not even connected yet i receive the calls in perfect quality. I don't even use my magicjack any more. Google voice is the best.

where are you?
In Santo Domingo (Bigbird) saw the MJ on sale in the small gift shop of the Jaragua Hotel/casino.

no need for that. I am also an electrical engineer.
Now if anyone doesn't want to buy a magicjack unit, then they can use a free program with a free incoming american number: www.bueno.com
the voice quality is excellent. The incoming call feature works fine but sometimes the servers are too busy to let you make an out going (1 min free) call.

LINGO now has DR included in their $23.95 package (plus free signup, free shipping, and $4.95 first month rate). Of course landlines only. They have now surpassed VONAGE in terms of free-countries-offered, Vonage has 50 or 60, Lingo has 75 destinations.

Thanks, I have had mine about 1 1/2 years now and wasn't aware of this...

I have found that if you shut down all other programs such as downloads etc. while using MJ it will work flawlessly... :)

but also i have found that if you use a powered usb hub it work a ton BETTER
most of the people who have a MJ have powered usb hub i use a INLAND USB 2.0 7 PORT POWER HUB it is very small and works great and stays cool does not get hot at all
we run 2 MJ one for home and one for are office phone
i will be in the DR and clients call are office line and have no clue we are in the DR for 2 or 3 weeks it is great and works good with wifi

make sure you guys don't have any files download programs running in the background example: ares, limewire etc. These programs will start with windows in the background and start uploading / downloading files (example: music, mp3). This will eat up your bandwidth, especially the upload bandwidth; in result you will have choppy reception. Make sure someone on the same wifi network is not watching youtube and/or prono videos. This will also eat up the bandwidth and thus, cause bad reception. If you guys have the basic dsl package of 256 download, you better not be doing anything else when talking on the phone.

I am having an issue with GIZMO5 working at the moment. It has been a while since I used GIZMO5 and my phone number attached to GIZMO5 may have expired. I understand if you don't use the phone number that they can expire in about a month.

No sir, you are confusing the ipkall.com with gizmo5.
ipkall number will expire if you don't use it for a month. People were using ipkall (washington state number) with gizmo5. Now that google voice has come into the game, people have switched on to google voice + gizmo. The reason being: you can choose an area code in google voice as opposed to ipkall (washington state # only). The magic of gizmo is that you can program it on a sip device (ex: linksys pap2-na). Now you have a free vonage type setup and the laptop doesn't even have to be turned on.

Some how my post must have been confusing. I already have 3 magic jacks. I am in NY. The person at our house in La Romana has a magic jack in their hand. When doing my research on magic jack I realized that in order for it to work so that I (from NY) can call the DR, there needs to be high speed internet at the house in the DR. Currently there is not. We've had it in the past (the kind that makes your land line busy) and I am now currently looking for some information on companies and rate info on internet that 1. does NOT tie up the phone line 2. that would be compatable with the magic jack

The Codetel "Caller-ID" is costing you an extra $70 pesos a month Lucille.(Plus 28% tax) lol

With all taxes, my bill comes to +/- $3,200 pesos per month. I have a higher speed.
