I too thank Mr. Fisher for holding our hands and guiding us. Great job. Also to everyone that gave on the ground reports and those that had suggestions on preparing. Lot's of good information and team work.

Outside of Sosua. The Atlantic ocean still has good sized swells but is calming down some. Power is still off but amazed that internet and TV still on. We didn't get that much rain and expect some showers perhaps but nothing major. Nice breeze and it feels so good to open up some windows.

I must confess, I am a little disappointed that I, as an individual, was not challenged and not even really inconvenienced. Getting ready for the worse was worse then the event.

I don't know why or how the DR got so lucky when everything pointed to a very bad situation and beyond. We have checked with our friends and workers and everything is fine. That is a big relief. I know that some have lost homes or having a bad time but nothing close to what the projections were indicating.

Thanks again. Time for a second cold one. ;)

The Virgin of Highest Grace (Virgen de la Altagracia) isn't called the Protector of the Dominican people for nothing!

Plenty of old ladies across the DR and even abroad prayed to her and asked her to do exactly what happened with Irma.

In this case protecting the DR also meant protecting Haiti. Kill two birds with one stone.

Just saying...

That, and big mountain ranges that pushed the storm north.

Funny comment that was unintended... but funny

we slipped the noose due to the mountains and the eyewall change ---IMO

less than other did and will experience...

Personally - I am glad it's over.... I was sweating bricks

Over?  Someone needs to tell Irma. Here in SD, the wind is just as strong as when it started.

RG84,
exactly that, the Capitalists are far away from where the action came, so you are the last to enjoy the party, lol.
we had here in Punta Cana no power out, no water gone, everything totally fine during the Passing of the Storm and then, after we already had 2 nice calm beach walks in the morning with the Kids playing on the seaweed filled beach, we heard some distant thunder and they shut our power out for over 30 minutes, due that double thunder and a late extra piece of rain(we did not get any rain to talk about during all the event). there is always some little something coming late afterwards.
what we did not get in any piece of Tail is wind, we've been here all day dead calm, Ocean is a flat plate.

So which Catholic saint should we blame for sending the storm in the first place?

Moderators, I thought this religious nonsense was supposed to be banned from this board?

Cameraman almost wiped out by Irma's wave - Local news cameraman Jose Antonio Beato was shooting footage in Nagua, Dominican Republic when Hurricane Irma's massive waves almost took him down.

Video - http://cnn.it/2wNjbpi

Hurricane can be dangerous that is one reason never go out and fool around!

Going with the mountain ranges myself as "the protector".

Cabarete had some tropical storm force winds and some rain. Frank12 has posted pictures of the ocean running up to the bars and restaurants at Cabarete Beach. Power has yet to be restored, but it flickered on and off for 2 seconds a few minutes ago, so they are working on it.

Mike Fisher, you do yeoman's work with hurricanes.

You not only inform folks about current weather events, you educate them about hurricanes in general.

An excellent book for those intrigued by hurricanes is The Scariest Place on Earth: Eye to Eye with Hurricanes by Dr. David Fisher.

Cat3 Jose is tracking 280 degrees, a straight Westward Heading on fast 18mphr.
will have to be watched again tmorrow.
it's straight Westward tracking can be seen on the loop which covers it's movement of the last hours

and we get actually our Highway protection shield up and strengthening.
only the southern lanes are still fairly wet paved,
by tomorrow the highway should be nice protected by a thick layer of dry saharan sand on the mid levels,
to bother any kinda shut that would try to become famous on any track of the famous Route.

Nothing about religion, but do you not have a tad bit of respect for the beliefs of the people who believe as such in THEIR country? Then again, you probably don't.
